PRINCIPALS REPORT

Term 2 2017 has been another successful term for Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High

School. We have participated in many events and celebrations that have involved the whole school

community, including our Iftar, Mothers Day morning tea, NAPLAN examinations, sports carnivals and

excursions.

Over the holidays and into early next term we will be upgrading the supply of electricity to the school

in preparation for the installation of more air-conditioning in classrooms. The installation of air-

conditioning will take time due to the processes that schools are required to go through for quoting

and tendering. It is likely that this process will run over several years before complete. We are also

looking into the installation of solar power to assist in providing power and reducing ongoing costs to

the school.

During this term the sports change room toilets above the school canteen have been upgraded and

repaired and will be ready for use early next term. These toilets have been closed for many years so

we are very thankful to be able to provide this facility to students again.

I wish everyone a restful school holiday and look forward to term 3. It will be an eventful term, with

parent-teacher meetings, course selections for years 10 into 11 and years 8 into 9, education week

events, a visit from Yamaguchi City School in Japan, and HSC Trial examinations, graduation and

formal.

Term 2 was very productive at our school! Year 8 students had their half yearly exams and were supported with their learning skills. I have met with students individually to discuss their future pathways, attendance and positive behaviour towards their learning. Many wellbeing programs were available for them to guide with strategies and skills for their lifelong learning. Well done to students who achieved their personal best and to those who need to improve, Semester 2 will be their opportunity. Year 10 students started to look their study patterns for the Preliminary year in 2018 and I have met with them as well as the Learning and Support Team, their Year Adviser and our Careers Adviser to discuss their future. Now is the time to ensure that all of their N Awards are completed. Congratulations to our students who have displayed excellent achievements in their learning. Year 12 students have completed their exams and are now preparing for their trials and then the HSC. Our Senior Students can access support with their learning on Friday afternoon during periods 5&6 in the CIRCLE.

My congratulations to students who are striving to excel and continue to put effort, time and dedication towards their future goals. Our Homework Centre is open every Monday from 3:15-4:15 pm to help students from all year groups with their studies. I would to thank all the parents/ carers I met with during Semester 1 to discuss their children's education. Your time, commitment and involvement in your children's learning are greatly valued. Our Positive Behaviour for Learning team is working collaboratively to ensure all students and parents/ carers are well aware of our LEARN expectations in all settings and thank you for your continued support. Our Learning and Support, Wellbeing, Student Leadership team had offered students many opportunities this Semester to develop their skills. The dedicated coordinators with the teams worked hard to deliver training and development to our students to bring out the best in them and improve their Learning and wellbeing. Well done! Wishing you a safe and a wonderful break. I look forward to seeing you in Term 3.

Uniform is available from Lowes in Stockland Mall, Merrylands and Oz Fashions – cnr. Good Street & Parramatta Road, Granville. We do have a limited stock, limited sizes, at the school.

Membership fee is $2.00 per year and this gives you a voting right at all meetings. This fee may be paid

P&C Silent Auction 6 Burner BBQ - Great gift for Dad for Father’s Day A number of years ago a 6 burner BBQ was donated to the P&C Association. The P&C have decided to auction this off for fundraising as they have another BBQ that they are currently using. The BBQ is still in two boxes as pictured in the photos below. The auction will be a silent auction managed as follows. The reserve price is $200 - no bids at or below this cost will be accepted. Bids will need to be written and placed in a sealed envelope with ‘BBQ Silent Auction’ written on the front - ensure you include your full name address and phone number in addition to your bid. A box is provided in A Block office. Bids will be accepted by members of the school community of age 18 or over. Bids will be accepted up until the closing date and time of 18th August 3.30pm. Envelopes will be opened after this date by the P&C committee. The bidder with the highest bid above the reserve will be considered the successful bidder and will be required to provide the full amount of their bid in cash to the secretary, Mrs Susan Grinyer by 3.30pm on 25th August. The successful bidder will need to negotiate a suitable time for pick up with Mrs Susan Grinyer - delivery cannot be provided. If the successful bidder does not provide full payment for the BBQ by 25th August, the second top

bidder will be contacted by phone and the same process as above applied. This will continue as required. If the BBQ is not picked up by the successful bidder by 22nd Sept. the BBQ will be offered to the second bidder. Money will not be refunded. Note there is no gas bottle with the BBQ and no warranty. The P & C will not refund any monies if there are any issues with the BBQ. The model we are auctioning is discontinued, however the Jumbuck Comet BBQ 6 burner hooded at the time this auction was advertised was $449. The boxes will not be opened for viewing but members of the community may make an appointment if

you would like to see the boxes before placing a bid, please contact the school for a suitable time.

On 21st March 2017 selected students from the

SLG had the honour of attending Macarthur Girls

High School’s Prefect Cluster. The day provided

our student leaders an opportunity to network

and share what qualities make a successful

leader. Students also shared the many of

Granville South CAPA High School’s success

stories in relation to student leadership.

“I learnt a lot from all of the visiting schools about how they run their leadership body. I also took away

great ideas to help motivate and get more of our students involved in fundraising and other special

events. All the students attending came back to school buzzing with new ideas and possibilities to offer

Annual Prairiewood High School 2017 Student Leadership Conference

On Friday 19th May 2017 selected students from the

Senior Leadership Group (SLG) attended an excursion to

the 6th Annual Prairiewood High School Student

Leadership Conference. The Conference offered

students the opportunity to participate in exciting and

thought provoking leadership and team building

activities and workshops. Students were also given the

opportunity to network with student leaders from

schools throughout NSW and listen to high profile and

celebrity keynote addresses.

A big thank you to the student leaders and staff of

Prairiewood High School for hosting a beneficial and

successful program for student leaders.

Year 9 PCYC Excursion

Year 9 boys took up the amazing opportunity to attend workshop camps at PCYC throughout the term,

every Wednesday. They attended various sessions and also got to listen to many presenters from clubs

and services.

Auburn Youth Club informed our students about voluntary services available for the young people and

encouraged people to drop in to a safe and supervised space where young people come to relax and

play indoor sports, soccer, basketball, table tennis and much more.

The Crime Prevention Workshop discussed the dangers of drink driving and stealing, going into details

on how the court works in relation to these crimes, warning us all to curb unlimited wants as we have

limited means. The CCTV on George Street was a fine example of how nothing escapes the eye of the

law. The presentation provided insight into changes and punishments in various legal scenarios.

Students showed great awareness in quizzes and were alarmed to learn even further about the length

of sentences for being 'in company’ to various crimes.

Court was another stopover, which was functional before 1980. Due to the fall in crime rates, the court

was turned into the museum. The students were invited to a tour around the court where 90% of the

cases were handled when it was active. Various scenes were enacted and the students felt the pathos

of those behind bars under strict conditions at the time when there was no CCTV. Overtime societies

change, and the laws changed too.





Tree Top Adventure provided our students the opportunity to engage in a fun array of tree games on

suspension bridges almost 30 m above the ground. Features included flying foxes, Tarzan swings, tight

ropes, suspended rafts, and many more challenges. These challenges allowed boys to push their limits

and learn great skills. The boys made their way through the curls and twists with curves and impressive

drops making their day the most adventurous one.

The mix of positive energy and excitement was apparent as they tried to overcome their fears.

The incredible PCYC staff and the recreational opportunities they offered would be a memorable

lesson for the boys to remember for the years to come.

Our CAPA Ensemble classes have been

working tirelessly during class and

extended rehearsals to prepare a range of

audition pieces for the 2017 festival

season. It is with great joy that we’d like to

congratulate our Drama Ensemble on their

successful performance of “Hercules Has

Some Fun” at audition that will see them

perform at NIDA in Term 3. Students will

receive all information regarding this

performance shortly.

Audition success has been widespread in our Ensembles as our Dance Ensemble were also successful

in their audition of “When the Music Stops Playing” for this year’s Ultimo Public Schools Dance Festival

at the Seymour Centre. Our dancers performed last Friday evening to a sold-out audience and did a

fantastic job!

There’s also another BIG announcement on the cards following one student’s success through all

stages of a very challenging audition process… but we can’t share the good news just yet! Keep all eyes

on our Facebook page to hear the announcement as soon as it drops!

Finally, a big congratulations to all of our Ensemble teachers for inspiring and leading their Ensembles

students to reach these successes.

Our Creative and Performing Arts Showcase Evening is fast approaching. This year held in Week 3,

Term 3 as we celebrate Education Week, our “Storylines” Showcases on Monday 31st July promises to

be another fantastic GSCAPAHS event with items from all of our Ensembles classes, Senior Music and

Drama Students, our Support Unit Group, and our Polynesian Ensemble! To be held once again at

Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres, parents of our performers for this event are strongly encouraged to

get in quick to purchase their tickets; $10 each from the front office.

CAPA Faculty





A number of Year 12 students will attend Holiday Workshops with their dedicated teachers during the

Term 2 holidays as they prepare to present their major works in Drama, Music, and Visual Arts next

term. Many of these students will be putting their finishing touches on practical work, with our Visual

Arts students taking this time to make some solid headway on their Body of Work.

I congratulate each of these students who recognise and take up this fantastic opportunity to work

one-on-one in workshops with their teachers.

At the end of Term 1, the Visual Arts Ensemble worked with a number of local professional artists as

part of the Art Crew program to create two brand new murals in B-Block. With the Ensemble

separated into two “Crews” they were encouraged to use public art as a platform for expression;

students were encouraged to create works that speak to and from the youth community, that envision

a better world, and that respond to pressing issues within youth communities in Western Sydney. The

end products are ones which the students are truly proud.

As a final note, Year 8 and 10 students are reminded that the process of subject selections will begin

early in Term 3. With a range of subjects available for selection in the CAPA faculty, students are

strongly encouraged to start considering their choices early and to speak with CAPA teachers about

their options. Students must consider their Semester One report card and results to see if the choice of

one or more elective CAPA subjects is right for them. Making informed subject choices is often the first

step towards success in senior study years.

Welcome to Mr Mitchell who is replacing Ms Cameron as our Elective Drama and Ensembles teacher.

We’re so pleased to have another energetic, dedicated professional as part of our CAPA team!

On Friday 23rd June 2017 the following sports coaching students assisted staff at the zone athletics carnival: Jakob Kaihea Bradley Salekiki Margaret Langi Students worked with a number of staff from schools within our zone area. Students assisted staff in high jump and discus. Students were responsible for adjusting the high jump bar to the correct height, pegging and measuring discus throws and packing up of athletics equipment. Students increased their understanding of the organisation and running of an athletics carnival at a zone level and also increased their confidence and knowledge of the rules of high jump and discus. Congratulations to all students for their ongoing participation and contribution in community sporting events.

Nan Tien excursion for Studies of

Religion students

May 18, 2017: With a term of hard

work behind us, Year 11 and 12

Studies of Religion students were

treated to an excursion to Nan Tien

Buddhist temple in Wollongong,

keen for a day of learning,

appreciation and fun.

The school mini buses were loaded,

students were briefed and we all set

out to learn even more about

Buddhism, a topic studied in Term

One of our Studies of Religion

course.

We eventually arrived at the Temple and swiftly began our three-hour guided tour. Our first activity for the day

was Tai Chi. As we amassed in the main courtyard, both students and teachers alike got to enjoy the relaxing

and invigorating art form designed to exercise the body and the mind. The 15 minute introductory lesson was

well received, with many students feeling the benefits instantly.

Tai Chi was followed by a traditional Buddhist meditation session. The group was led into the Nan Tien

meditation room and guided by a resident Reverend, well versed in the discipline of meditation. As the group

allowed themselves to settle in the exercise, the calm and change in energy could be felt throughout the room.

After a short talk and meditation, we emerged relaxed and settled and ready to enjoy the tour of the onsite

Buddhism Museum which contained some miraculous works of mindfulness (including strains of hair painted

with passages from Buddhist sacred texts). Lunch then followed, provided by the Temple as part of our tour. For

many, it was their first-ever vegetarian meal – and the reactions from the students were interesting. However

everyone showed their due respect by enjoying the lunch provided.

The tour continued to the seven-level Pagoda, a building for storing cremated remains, before trekking to the

Gratitude Bell, where each student rung the bell while giving thanks to something they appreciate in their life. A

short walk back from the Gratitude Bell and we were shown the Main Shrine.

Five giant Buddha statues lined the back wall of the Main Shrine which was then encompassed by 10,000 mini

Buddha statues, designed to represent that there is not just one Buddha, but that anyone with the discipline

and desire can attain the same level of enlightenment as the Buddha.

After a short talk in the Main Shrine it was time to say our thank yous and goodbyes and return to school. The

excursion was a great success, enjoyed by all, and acted as a just-reward for those hard workers who had

started the year in such a positive manner. We look forward to more excursions throughout the year!

The Prospect Zone Cross Country carnival was held this week at Granville Park. Despite some early morning rain the day turned out perfect for our competitors. Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High school took a team of thirteen to this event and all students are to be congratulated on their behaviour on the day. With Juniors running 3 km and seniors running 6 km, the task was not easy, though all students deserve recognition for their efforts. This year has been a busy year for our Year Twelve VET Entertainment

students (Akosita Masima, Emma Roulston, Josefa Toga, Joseph Bedros

and Deren Sen). A few weeks earlier the Entertainment Crew did a work

placement at Casula Powerhouse for the production of Simpson, J 202,

produced by the Liverpool Performing Arts Ensemble Inc. The crew

worked backstage setting props and staging in between scenes as well

as assisting the actors change costumes in preparation for their next

scene. They worked closely with the cast and the director Rosie Daly to

make the best out of the production. The play was produced

professionally with good paying audience numbers. Our Granville South

Creative and Performing Arts High School VET Entertainment Production

Crew did a fantastic job and received very complimentary feedback from

the Director for our hard effort. This was a fantastic learning experience

in a professional performance space.

During this Term, S4 and S5 classes have been studying about Ancient Egypt as part of the Stage 6 Life

Skills History program. In this unit of work, students studied death and the afterlife with particular

focus on the mummification process.

Year 10 Excursion to UNSW ASPIRE ‘Physics – Why Does It Matter’ Workshop

On Thursday 11th May 2017 a select group of twelve Year 10 students accompanied by Mr Azzopardi

attended the University of New South Wales (UNSW) ASPIRE on-campus ‘Physics – Why Does It

Matter’ workshop.

Students started the morning by experiencing a planetarium where they enjoyed an amazing tour of

the southern night sky and listened to an engaging presentation about stars, galaxies and

constellations.

Throughout the day students participated in several interactive physics workshops. Students gained

knowledge into our current understanding of gravity, the theory of relativity, proposed by Albert

Einstein. The interactive demonstration of a space-time vortex allowed students to explore concepts of

the space-time continuum.

Other activities our students participated in included the Catapult Challenge which involved designing

and constructing a working catapult to help students think about the physics behind projectiles and

launchers.

Year 11 and Year 12 Excursion to UNSW ASPIRE ‘Children’s Cancer Institute’

On Wednesday 7th June 2017 eleven

Year 11 and Year 12 students

accompanied by Mr Azzopardi

attended the University of New

South Wales (UNSW) on-campus

excursion to the Children’s Cancer

Institute. The excursion was hosted

by ASPIRE, which is an innovative

partnership between Granville South

CAPA High School and UNSW.

Students attending the excursion

started the day very early, arriving to

school at 7:30am in wet and windy conditions. Our luxury coach arrived at 7:45am and by 10:00am we

had arrived at UNSW Kensington campus where we were warmly greeted by ASPIRE staff and student

Ambassadors.

After enjoying a brief morning tea, students visited the Children’s Cancer Institute. Here we listened to

three engaging presentations from research scientists who discussed their career progression and their

current research in the fields of Medical Science. After listening to presentations, we were taken on a

tour of the state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

To conclude the day, students visited the Museum of Human Disease. Contained within the museum is a collection of 3000 specimens of human tissue that contains examples of both infectious and non-infectious diseases. Each specimen is accompanied by a clinical history and some specimens are over 100 years old.

On the 31st May 2017 an excursion was organised for students of HSC Standard English. Students

watched a spectacular live performance of their prescribed HSC text, The Shoe-horn Sonata by John

Misto. The excursion was held at the Giant Dwarf Theatre in Redfern. The play deals with the brutality

of World War II by looking at the stories of two female characters, Bridie and Sheila and the hardships

they endured as female nurses and prisoners of war. The live performance not only clarified the

synopsis of the play but also enriched and assisted students’ understanding of the dark human

experiences presented in the text. Feedback by our senior students showed that they both enjoyed the

performance and gained new knowledge that will assist their study of the text. Here is what some staff

On the 31st May 2017 15 year 9

students and 5 Year 10 students

attended the Aspire Taster and Design

Day at University of New South Wales.

Aspire is an innovative partnership

between our school and UNSW. This

program works with students of all

ages to build awareness about higher

education.

The students were involved in a range of faculty-based activities on UNSW campus. Throughout the

day, UNSW student volunteers known as Aspire Ambassadors assisted in answering any questions the

students had about courses and shoed them what it’s like to be a university student.

Year 9 students tasted different programs run by UNSW staff and students from the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Law, Science, Engineering, Built Environment and the UNSW School of Business. University students will also showcase some of the wide range of clubs and societies on offer at university.

Highlights included solving ethical dilemmas in the moot court, building and racing solar energy cars, creating toilet paper superheros, measuring muscles and learning about pathways to careers. Lunchtime saw great food from JGs, career cut-outs and circus tricks amongst other fun activities.

Our year 10 students attended Design Day, an interactive workshop on design development led by

UNSW Arts and Design senior lecturer and fellow university students. Students were given the

opportunity to use their collect their thought and ideas and create different models. Students later

then joined the rest of the schools for lunch, and then later were back in action creating and moulding

their ideas together.

Overall students gained an understanding of ‘a day in the life of a uni student’ as well as experienced

the different courses available to choose from. Such a great and beneficial day for all.

Year 10 Food Technology Buffet Day

Year 10 ‘Busy Bees Buffet Chefs’ had the chance to show case

their skills from what they have learnt in the topic “Food

Service and Catering”. The buffet was part of their assessment

task and gave students the opportunity to develop their skills.

The students cooked up a storm, including BBQ lamb and

chicken skewers, cous cous salad, hummus, fruit salad,

samosas, and an array of delicious dips. The centrepiece of the

occasion was a decorative cake created by a passionate

student baker. The cake was baked to perfection and

beautifully presented.

The buffet carried a Hawaiian theme, which saw students and

staff surf into the delicious delights. A big thankyou to Ms Mazzei for bringing some of her Hawaiian

decorations to help create a visual spectacular on the day.

Year 10 Food Technology were undoubtedly the stars of the day! They worked extremely hard to

produce quality food and a great ambience. The day could not have run smoothly without the help

from Ms Mazzei, Ms Paradisis, Ms Dwyer and Ms O’Keefe who put their time and energy into helping

with the organisation of the day.

We all had a surfin’ good time.

A masterpiece from a talented student - Hanna Yaakub, Year 11

Hanna has made a considerable effort to

design, construct and finish a masterpiece

(bedside table/ work/ coffee table, out of

recycled pine timber and glass. He also

installed furniture hardware including;

draw runners and a draw handle. He has

been able to achieve a quality finish in

walnut staining and estapol lacquering.

This furniture will be used in his bedroom

and especially designed to blend in with

existing furniture in his bedroom.

He has definitely inspired many of his

classmates in many ways by doing this

project. His project incorporates joints as

required by syllabus outcomes.

I can’t wait to see his major work for his

HSC next year.

We are excited to announce that the Support Unit in Granville South CAPA High School

will be taking part in the 2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn program again this year.

During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the

points we earned, thanks to you.

Starting 26th July, 2017 until 19th September, 2017, we are asking you to collect stickers

at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at

Woolworths you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children

to collect on a special sticker card or just to bring the stickers to school and we will do

the pasting. Both the stickers and/or cards can be handed in to the teachers in the

Support Unit or can be dropped in the collection box in the front office. Please be aware

that there may be a collection box for our school at Woolworths in Granville.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000

educational resources including Mathematics and English resources, art & crafts

materials and much, much more!

Eid Mubarek to all our Students, Parents and Staff!

We have almost completed the fast in the Holy month of Ramadan which is considered the most important month in the Islamic calendar. On Sunday the 25 of June Muslims from around the

globe will be celebrating Eid-ul Fitr; which marks the end of Ramadan. Eid is a 3 day celebration which allows Muslims to visit family and friends, the elderly and sick and to spoil young ones with

sweets and gifts.

Ramadan is a time of community, generosity, spiritual cleansing and reconnecting to our Creator. I would like to remind our Muslim students to continue the self-restraint and patience they have

acquired in Ramadan and to always strive to improve themselves, respect their teachers and parents and to dedicate themselves to seeking knowledge.

The following is a poem from the 7th century scholar- Jalaladdin Rumi:
