LT Michael P. Murphy died to save his fellow NAVY SEALs.Local Hero, Michael Murphy, was born and raised on Long Island where he served as a Town of Brookhaven lifeguard at Lake Ronkonkokma. Michael graduated from Penn State University with Honors, and instead of attending Law School, joined the Navy SEALs.He was 29 in June 2005, when he perished in a fierce firefight in mountainous terrain along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Operation Red Wings. During the mission, Michael led a four-man special reconnaissance unit that was in pursuit of a high-ranking terrorist leader when they were ambushed and overrun by scores of insurgent fighters. A troop transport helicopter carrying eight Navy SEALs and eight Army Commandos was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. All aboard were killed. A single member of Murphy’s team managed to elude capture, and eventually was reunited with U.S. forces. The Lone Survivor said that Murphy was already wounded when he climbed to higher ground and into the open to send an electronic call for help. While vulnerable, he was shot again and again, Murphy completed the call and continued to fight. It was this action that is believed to be at the heart of his being awarded the Medal of Honor.
Other medals awardedto Michael are:The Silver StarPurple HeartCombat Action Ribbon Afghanistan Campaign Medal
