Outliers is our response to the injustice of unequal access to education in South Africa. We
believe that every child deserves access to a safe space to develop their love for learning.
With more than 10 years of experience in the after-school program sector, Outliers knows the
value and impact these safe spaces have on students. With opportunities to do their
homework and supplement their learning, students who attend after-school programs are
more likely to stay in school and progress to the next grade.
We work with the coordinators and tutors to ensure these community-based programs remain
sustainable and continue to meet the high demands placed on them. We grow our social
capital by advocating for and building collaborations that impact the after-school programs in
their ability to reach more students. The social capital is invested in the Outliers after-school
program network through training and resourcing for creating safe spaces and equipping these
spaces for academic support.
By February 2020, Outliers had grown to a network of 183 after-school programs supporting
12 114 students with access to a safe learning space after school.

Team Outliers
Thank you to all the after-school programs, friends and family of Outliers, our Board of
Trustees and our donors for supporting this work. Together, we have positively
impacted the lives of thousands of students.
Students in lower quintile schools have to navigate many
challenges to ensure their academic success. Without
remediation to overcome setbacks, these students are
destined to drop out of school.

Students in high-risk crime areas are exposed to high
levels of risk-taking behaviour in the unsupervised
hours after school.
After-school programs provide a place of safety and
support for students to develop a love for learning. As
they improve their academic performance, they are
more likely to progress to the next grade.
The coordinators of after-school programs have a good
understanding of the obstacles to learning faced by
students in their communities. They care for these
students and help build their confidence and self-worth.
With access to after-school programs, students improve their academic performance, stay in
school, and reduce risk-taking behaviour. In 183 after-school programs in the Outliers network,
more than 12 000 students feel cared for and seen.
We use various platforms to raise awareness, grow our social
network, and invite collaborations that impact the after-school
programs sector. Though developing these relationships had an
associated cost of R218 878 to Outliers, we were able to amplify
the value to R725 052. This is possible due to our ability to
mobilise social capital for greater good. We raised awareness
through social media platforms, hosted advocacy forums, spoke at
events, broadcast interviews, and managed stakeholder
relationships to invite investment in the network.
CONNECT
The lack of access to social capital limits the ability of after-school programs to access
training and mobilize resources to sustain their programs. By connecting with civil society,
we are able to advocate for investment of social capital to train and resource the after-
school programs sector.

This investment in Outliers is thereby converted into a value-add for
the after-school programs, who benefit from access to training and
to resourcing at little to no cost to the network.
TRA INWe have developed training modules to help after-school
programs create safe spaces for learning and equip them for
academic support in low-resourced settings. These modules
have been shaped by participants who shared their knowledge
and expertise from working in the after-school program sector
over the past 10 years. Content includes how to start an after-
school program, plan strategically, operate with good
governance, create inclusive learning spaces and support literacy
and numeracy development. Through site-visits, centralized
gatherings, and decentralized training hubs, we hosted 88 hours
of training covering content such as aligning vision and mission,
building team resilience, running holiday clubs, facilitating
sessions, building inclusive learning spaces, and understanding
the importance of gender identity.
Thanks to in-kind donations of venue hire, printing, catering, and
facilitation, we are able to maintain access to training sessions at
no cost to maximum R30 per person.
RESOURCE
Access to resources remains a real challenge for many after-school
programs in low-income settings. In collaboration with schools and
businesses, we mobilized basic resources by running collection
drives for equipment, games, library books, and stationery to help
create safe spaces for learning. In partnership with friends of
Outliers, we mobilized basic educational resources, such as CAPS-
aligned workbooks and textbooks, as well as extension resources,
such as science kits and microscopes, to supplement academic
support.
We mobilized resources to the value of R680 264 at a cost of
R4 015 to the network.
“As an organization we are truly grateful for the assistance you have provided us since we
began our partnership. We have had struggles like other grassroots organizations. We
draw strength from generous people like yourself. Your influence gives us the fuel to keep
going even when we are facing hardships.”
Lungisa Sobhuwa, Sikhulekile, Philippi
By mobilizing our social network to support the activities of the Outliers after-school programs
network, we are able to considerably reduce overhead costs. To further ensure financial
sustainability, we have diversified our income streams across 3 channels: 1) individual donors, 2)
grants and 3) corporate social investments. Donations from individuals in our social network
constituted up to 83% of our total income. We are sincerely grateful to each person who shares our
vision and has committed to financially support us.
