    Description Navjyoti India Foundation has been working withunderserved communities ever since its inception in 1987.Presently, the organisation works in Resettlement Coloniesof North West Part of Delhi namely Bawana andJahangirpuri, and an urbanized rural area called Karala andVillages in Gurgaon district, Sohna Block, Haryana.Education, Women Empowerment and Vocational Traininghave been the primary areas of intervention by theorganisation in these communities. Besides, health care,environment interventions and community participation are

    also run for promoting integrated community developmentservices.

    Mission To mobilize and harness the power of children, youth,women and people at large to combat illiteracy, ignorance,gender discrimination and the evil of addiction with anultimate aim of crime prevention and social development.

    Our Organization

    Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation is a voluntary organization registered under the Society Registration Act,1860, in the year 1987. A seventeen year old organization formed under the leadership of Dr Kiran Bedihas been running several interventions in the areas of child education, women empowerment, health care,

    vocational training, protection, shelter, rural development, de-addiction treatment and counselling andenvironment.

    Our History

    Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation was founded by Dr Kiran Bedi and 17 other like-minded Officials of DelhiPolice, as a result of the inextricable link that existed between crime and drugs. The objectives were towork for correction, de-addiction and rehabilitation of the drug addicts as a crime prevention measure.Realizing the need to adopt an integrated approach, the organization started to reach out to other left outsections of society as well including women, children, youth and general community.

    To challenge the social inequalities and empower the vulnerables by enabling them to help themselves.

    Our Mission

    To mobilize and harness the power of children, youth, women and people at large to combat illiteracy,ignorance, gender discrimination and the evil of addiction with an ultimate aim of crime preventionand social development.

    Our Objectives

    To ORGANIZE services for individuals, groups and communities to enable them to learn and act towardscommunity development.

    To INITIATE correctional and rehabilitative measures for the criminals and drug addicts.

    To PROVIDE preventive, corrective and rehabilitative services concerning drug and alcohol abuse atprimary, secondary and tertiary levels and promote temperance.

    To PROMOTE formal and non formal education for empowerment of women, children and youth.

    To UNDERTAKE projects for development of education, vocational, training and self help groups in ruralareas.

    To CONDUCT research on social issues and problems of development.

    To DISSEMINATE information on the same through print and audio visual media.

    Our Project Sites

    Navjyoti is operational in three resettlement colonies of Delhi located in the North and North West Part ofDelhi and in rural areas in Sohna Bolck of Guragon District in Haryana. Besides, a Drug DemandReduction Training Institute is running in Karala Majri in North West Delhi.

    Our Strategic Interventions :-

    Education interventions Preparing Children for the mainstream

    Balwari A total of seven Balwaris in Bawana are offering early childhood care and education to

    more than 100 children in the age group of 3 to 5 years.

    Gali schools More than 4000 Children in the age group of 4 to 8 years are offered education at

    their doorstep in different project areas with a view to increase their inclination towards education.

    Learning Centres A s p a r t o f t h e g o v e r n m e n t s programme for Universalization

    of Elementary Education, Navjyoti is running 50 learning centers in Bawana and 15 in Jahagirpuri in

    order to reach out to drop out and out of school children to prepare them for mainstream education. A

    total of 2600 children are covered through this intervention. Bridge Education Bridge education is an

    endeavor to offer tutorial assistance to children studying in government and private schools especially

    at the secondary level in order to ensure their continuity andretention and enhance their performance.

    catering to 200 children in Bawana are running presently. These children are also provided with

    career counselling and life skill education.

    Health Care promoting positive health seeking behaviour

    General OPD:- A general OPD run for seven hours a day provides treatment for variousailments. Besides, linkages are developed with various government and private hospitals to referpatients requiring specialized treatment and organizing awareness and treatment camps forreaching out to large number of beneficiaries.

    School Health Programme:- School health programme is an integral aspect of the health careservices where all the children in the education components are provided with health monitoringon regular basis as well as health education according to the prescribed curriculum.

    Community Based Care and Support Programme for People Living with HIV/AIDS:- HealthCenter at Holambi Kalan is running a community based care and support programme for peopleliving with HIV/AIDS and striving to improve the quality of life of vulnerable children and PLHAs.

    DOTS Programme: DOTS Programme for treatment of TB patients in collaboration with the MCDChest Clinic is catering to around 50 TB patients at HolmabiKalan

    Drug De-addiction Counseling Centre at Bawana :- Thecentre mobilizes and counsels patients suffering fromaddiction to under go treatment and also generatesawareness on drug abuse in the area.

    Women developmentprogrammes tool forempowerment

    Empowerment of women through micro credit in Sohna Block : - Commencing in November

    2003, theproject envisions to make a differencein the social and economic conditions of womenin the villages through organizing more than 300 women in 30 Self Help Groups and mobilizingthem to enhance IGPs and raise awareness and participation in various social anddevelopmental activities.

    Family Counseling Centre:- The center offers advice and counseling to the distraught familiesprimarily on the issues of marital discords, dowry harassment, drug or alcohol addiction and childabuse. Free legal advice and referral services are also provided.

    Womens Groups in Jahangir Puri:- Around 170 women are organized into 17 groups who arebeing sensitized on various developmental issues and encouraged to participate meaningfully invarious activities of theorganization.

    Adult education for women in Bawana and Holambi Kalan :- Nine adult education centers inBawana and four in Holambi Kalan are catering to around 250 women and striving to increasetheir awareness about various developmental issues as well.

    Project Swabhimaan for promoting self reliance of women in shelter Homes:- The projectstarted in partnership with Social welfare Department of the Delhi Government, an NGO Partnersin Change and Corporates like GAP Inc and Signet seeks to offer economic self reliance foraround 100 women living in shelter Homes in Nirmal Chhaya Complex

    Computer Training Centre at Karala: -A computer center has been opened in the Karala villagefor providing computer training in the areas of DTP and MS Office to around 50 youth inthe area.Vocational Skills in the areas ofStitching and Tailoring, Typing and Beauty Culture:-Vocational Skills are imparted in these trades to more than 150 women in Jahagirpuri,HolmabiKalan and Naya Gaon village in Sohna Block to

    offer them opportunities of becoming self reliance.Besides, these women are also provided withentrepreneurship and marketing skills. Placement servicesfor facilitating on- the- job training has also beenintroduced recently.Community mobilization platform forsustainabilityEliciting the participation of the community in all theprogrammes have been one of the most importantstrategies of Navjyoti to aim towards sustainability. Underthe programme, community leaders, various communitybased groups such as PTMs, School supervision

    committees and youth groups are mobilized andcapacitated to advocate for the cause of the communityboth at the micro and macro levelEnvironment Programmes towardssustainable lifestylesWith a view to adopt social change to adopt environmentfriendly and sustainable lifestyles, interventions have beeninitiated in project areas especially in villages in SohnaBlock. A project on Developing sustainable waterharvesting structures in Abhyepur village has beeninitiated in the year 2004 with the support of NetherlandsEmbassy. Construction of a check Dam, recharging of

    dried up wells, and installation of two hand pumps,gully plugging and reviving ponds has been themajor activities so far.

    Drug Demand ReductionTraining Institute working for exceptionsOPD for counseling and mobilizingdrug addicts: The OPD at Sarai RohillaPolice station operates as a day carecenter for orienting and mobilizing thepatient and his family for the treatment.

    The schedule covering yoga, inputsessions, individual counseling sessionsis followed from 10 to 5 p.m.Drug Abuse Counseling and Treatment Center: Thesix months treatment programme run by the organizationis based on an integrated and multidimensional approachof counseling, homoeopathy, yoga, naturopathy andspirituality. It works on the therapeutic community modeland also runs family assistance and after care programmesas integral aspects of treatment and recovery of thepatients.Training of Stakeholders on Drug Demand Reduction

    Our efforts have received accolades encomium fromvarious quarters. We have been accorded specialconsultative status with economic and social council ofUnited Nations (ECOSOC). Navjyoti has also won theDelhi State Award for Child Welfare for the year 1998.TheSerge Sotiroff memorial Award of the United Nations DrugControl Programme (UNDP) for outstanding contributionin the field of international drug control has encouragedus to keep our relentless work. The founder GeneralSecretary Dr. Kiran Bedi has been awarded the prestigiousRamon Magsaysay Award equivalent to the Asian NobelPrize, for Government service, which gave us stimulation

    to work harder.

    Therapeutic Community model followed for workingon the attitudes of patients with individual and groupcounseling very vital components. Homoeopathy, spirituality, yoga and naturopathy areintegral aspects of treatment. Family assistance programme, after care and homevisits ensures reintegration of the patient into thesociety.23
