Dear Parents, Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Claire and I would like to extend a warm welcome as we begin our new academic year at Shanghai American School. We hope you have enjoyed a relaxing change of pace this summer and are ready for an exciting new year.

We especially welcome new families, faculty and staff. You will find Shanghai an extraordinary city with endless numbers of interesting places to visit, dine, and explore. At SAS you will find a school which values the full range of academic, co-curricular, athletic, and other pursuits. We set high standards of excellence and work hard to help each student to fully develop his or her potential.

We hope you will become familiar with our mission statement and core values. They are important and foundational ideas for the education we provide.

I’d also like to share with you some of Claire’s and my experiences this summer with our grand-children and the conclusions we drew about education and connections with “21st Century learning.” We are blessed with three grandchildren, Jackson (four years old), Katherine (two years), and Clara (16 months).

While often physically exhausting for us, playing with and taking care of youngsters their ages was eye-opening. We observed things we had forgotten, or perhaps had never noted when our sons were young.

We had forgotten how creative small children can be. They use myriad objects to construct play areas such as forts and houses. They use shoes or toy train engines as mobile phones. Often they will collaborate and work together to build sand castles or cook and serve a pretend meal. They are endlessly curious and inquisitive as they explore new places. Often they are teachers themselves, as when big brother tries to instruct baby sister how to say what she wants rather than mumbling or screaming. They certainly are risk-takers as they climb the furniture or the big kids jungle gym — causing their grandparents, into whose care they are entrusted, endless anxiety and nervousness!

What struck us was how many of these “21st Century” skills which we today emphasize and instill in students are ones which come so naturally to very young children.

Our challenge as educators and parents is to keep alive this natural learning and growth as children move through school. We should continually ask ourselves such questions as: What stifles children’s natural creativity or desire to help others? What gets in the way of natu-ral exploration of their environment? What turns collaboration and teamwork into conflict?

We will do everything we can as SAS educators, working with parents, to instill for the long-term these important skills and abilities in children of all ages.

Perhaps we just need to look more closely once again as young children naturally teach and learn themselves.

Warm regards,

Richard W. Mueller, Superintendent

PTSA General Meeting Wednesday, November 26 10:30 AM-Noon LMC

The SAS Parent, Teacher, and Student Association (PTSA) Puxi is committed to support-ing our students through social,

educational, and fundraising activities. As parents of an SAS student, you are automatically a member of the PTSA. Parents can show your support for your child’s education by volunteering to help in a wide range of activities. The International Fair, Eagle Shop and Winter/Spring Bazaars are just a few of the PTSA fundraisers that support student activities. These include high school clubs, the Booster Club, middle school dance so-cials, athletics hospitality, elementary room parties, Passport Club, and more. Parent volunteers are welcome to sign-up to help. There are many ways to help make SAS a good experience for you and your child. Participating in the PTSA is a positive way to meet new friends, embrace our commu-nity’s diversity, be involved in your child’s school, and explore more about what SAS has to offer. The PTSA organizes parent and teacher networking events such as the First Friends Morning Coffee, Parent-Teacher Social, Winter Auction, and parent networking coffees throughout the year. Further exampes or collaborations for our community include teacher appreciation, student ‘cheer-up’ treats and the annual Teacher Appreciation Lunch. To find out more about volunteering, meetings, fundraisers, and extracurricular activities, please visit the Puxi PTSA blog at http://teachers.saschina.org/puxiptsa. The PTSA can also be reached by email at [email protected] or through a PTSA board member. For activities specific to your child’s grade, please check the PTSA blog and contact your grade representative. Have a wonderful year and we look forward to meeting you!

The SAS Parent, Teacher, and Student Association (PTSA) Pudong was established to bring about a closer relationship

between home and school. It is a way for parents and teachers to cooperate in our children’s education, as well as unite educa-tors and our international community. As a parent, you are already a member of the PTSA—you just have to get involved.

The Fall Carnival, our biggest event of the year, Santa’s Workshop, Quiz night, and Staff Appreciation Week, are some of the many activities that we host to help support our students and teachers at SAS. We encourage and welcome everyone to volunteer their time or services to help the events be as successful as possible.

There are many ways to be involved with the PTSA—from volunteering your time with the Eagle Shop to helping orga-nize an event. It is a great way to make a difference, meet new people, and have fun. To find out more about getting involved you can visit the Pudong PTSA blog at http://sites.saschina.org/pudongptsa. You can also email us at [email protected] or through a PTSA board member.

We wish you and your family a won-derful school year!
