Storm-force winds, rain rip school Serious injury as flagpole falls on parked car

The wife of an NPS student was seriously injured when storm-force winds and rain ripped across the Monterey Peninsula on Friday, toppling the school's 105-foot wooden flagpole and crushing the vehicle she was sitting in.

Sharon Mahaffey, wife of Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jay Mahaffey, had to be cut from her vehicle by the Monterey Fire Department's "jaws oflife." She was taken to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where she was listed in fair condition with a good prognosis for recovery, according to a hospital spokesman. She had been in the hospital's intensive care unit, with a possible concussion or bruised brain, the spokesman said.

Rescue workers struggle to remove Sharon Mahaffey from her car after the school's 105-footflagpolefellacross it. Storm-force winds raced across much of the Central Coast on Friday, leaving in its wake a swath of damage. At least a dozen trees were completely blown over, temporarily blocking several base roads. Photo by JOSN Davis Bowden.

Lt. Cmdr. Mahaffey was on the steps of Herrmann Hall when the pole came down. He is in the administrative sciences curriculum.

The heaviest financial damage on the

NPS campus was sustained by the supply warehouse, according to David Tedrow, head of the engineering division of Public Works Department. "Preliminary estimates of the damage to that building caused by fallen trees range from between $30,000

to $40,000." Public Works intends to replace the flag

pole with a fiberglass or metal version at an expected cost of $10,000, said Lt. Nick Cimorelli, assistant public works officer.

Building a better NPS: Construction buzzing (Ediror's note: This is the first of monthly columns to appear in

the Quarterdeck concerning construction taking place at the NPS.)

Construction activity is increasing, as evidenced by the trenches and pits excavated for the new steam distribution system.

In FY 1987, $4.8 million was spent for construction at NPS, La Mesa and Fleet Numerical Oceanographic Center. By 1989 that figure had ballooned to $9.7 million, and all indicators are that even more construction will be accomplished in 1990.

High visibility projects currently under way include remodelling the fire station and construction of a wind profiling radar facility at Fort Ord.

Remodelling of the Reserve Center in Pacific Grove is also on

going. Presently, work is under way on 20 contracts, and this is traditionally the slow time of year for government construction.

Projects recently completed include the roofs on buildings 232, 220 and 222. Essentially complete projects with minor items of work remaining are the wind tunnel near the golf course, the CAD/ CAE lab, the renovation of the BEQ and the steam distribution system.

Several major projects will be getting started soon. The most visible will be the classroom facility to be built near the fire station. Under the same contract is a library addition. Bids on this multimillion dollar project were scheduled to be opened in February, but due to the current freeze on funds work will probably not start before May.

Walters said much of the La Mesa housing area was without electricity as crisscrossing power lines caused switches to malfunction. The area also experienced significant tree damage, blown-down fences and reduced water pressure.

PWC crews are still involved in the clean up, as well as a volunteer effort spearheaded by the Officer Student Advisory Council.

"People are going to have to be patient. There are going to be many things put aside until we recover from this situation," Walters said.
