MessagefromthePresident

Namaste(नम ते)andSeason’sGreetings!OnbehalfofNepaleseAssociationofVictoriaexecutivecommittee,itgivesmeanenormouspleasuretopresentyoutheNAVannualreport2015.Theyear2014/15hasbeenaneventfulyearfortheNepalandtheNepalesecommunityinVictoria.Wehadtoendureadevastatingearthquakethattookthousandsoflife,renderedhundreds of thousand injured and homeless and destroyed many world heritagemonuments, monasteries, buildings and infrastructure across the country. Amid suchtragedy,theNepalesecommunityinVictoriastoodtogetherandextendedtheirhandinthemassivereliefeffort.NAVjoinedhandswithNRNAandtheConsulateofficeinajointappealto raise funds for earthquake relief inNepal throughVictoria StandsTogether forNepal(VSTFN):NepalEarthquakeAppeal.Theoutpouringofsupportwassimplyoverwhelming.TheNepalesecommunitywillforeverbegratitudeforthegenerosityofallVictorian.As usualNAVorganised several programs in the financial year 2014/15.NAV organisedAnnual Bal Diwas (Children’s Day) Program focusing on our children; Annual RGIT CupCricket Tournament, Dashain and Tihar program to share our culture diversity andstrengthening ties with VMC, ECCV and other Australians community; Teej Festival forNepalese women; and Melbourne Chaurari and Bal Chautari program to engage ourchildreninculturalactivities.Inanefforttoraisecommunityawarenessontheissuesthatmatterstothemembersofourcommunity,NAVstarteditsnewinitiative,NAVSocialAwarenessForum,in2015.ThefirstintheseriesinNAVSocialAwarenessForumwasonatopicofBullying.ThiswasheldonSaturday 28 February 2015 at Coburg Library, Coburg. The second forum, Child SexualAbuse: Psychological Effects and Prevention, was held in August 2015 during bal diwasprogram.WebelievethatforumssuchastheseonthetopisthatmatterstothecommunitywillgoalongwayinprovidingtheNepalesecommunitywithinformation,knowledgeandsupportthatareusefulandessential.NepaleseAssociationofVictoria(NAV)wasestablishednearlytwodecadeagotoprovideaplatformtounite,socialiseandgatherallNepalesemigrantsandresidentsinVictoria.Sinceits inception, theNepalese community has progressed a lot and the size of theNepalesecommunityhasgrownsignificant.Accordingly,theneedofthecommunityandexpectationfromtheorganisationhasalsoshifted.WethereforebelievethattimehasnowcomeforustogettogethertoreviewtheobjectivesofNAVtobetteralignwiththecurrentneedofthecommunity. It’s timethatwereassessourrole inthecommunity;establishprioritiesanddirectionfor future.Withthis inmind,weorganisedastrategyworkshopinOctoberandNovember of this year to have a collective discussion. We have started this process toensureNAVisplayinganeffectiveandrelevantroleinthecommunityforthecommunityandI’mconfidentthatthroughcommunitysupportwecanmakeithappen.I’dliketotakethisopportunitytomyteam–myexecutivecommitteemembers‐fortheirpassionanddedicationoverthepasttwoyears.Withouttheirsupportandteamspiritwe

NepaleseAssociationofVictoria(NAV)Activities2014‐2015Children’sDay(BalDiwas)2014TheChildren’sDay(BalDiwas)2014wasorganizedbyNepaleseAssociationofVictoria(NAV)onceinayearsince2003topayrespect,careandattentiontoourveryyoungchildreninourcommunity.Theprogramwassuccessfully conducted at St. Ambrose Church hall at 3 Dawson Street, Brunswick on 10 August 2014,Saturdayfrom10am‐4pm.Thehighlightofprogramwasfacepainting,talentshow,quizandsportsactivitieswithprizeandcertificatepresentationbyChiefGuestDeputyMayorCrMeganHopper fromMorelandCityCouncil, Nepalese Consulate General of Victoria Mr Chandra Yonzon, senior members of the community,organisingcommitteemembersandparentswereinfullsupporttosacrificeonedayfortheirchildren.NAVprovidedfreemeal,drinksandcertificatetoallparticipants’children.Aworkshop,ranbyRanjanVaidya,forparentstotalkaboutissuesregardingchildrenwasalsoheldontheday.ExecutivememberKusumPokharelwastheCoordinatorforChildren’sDay(BalDiwas)2014.NAVTeejMela2014NAV organised Teej Festival Program on Sunday, 24th August 2014 at 859 High Street, The ThornburyTheatre.Theprogramwasattendedbyover600womenfromaroundtheVictoriaincludingaspecialguestDeputyMayorCrMeganHopperfromMorelandCityCouncilwith.Thewholeeveningwasfullyentertainedbydances,songsandmusic.Thehighlightofeveningwasthefashionparadebytheladiesdressintraditionalandelegantdresses.VicePresidentDeepaRaiwastheCoordinatorofTeejMela2014.NAVRGITCupCricketTournament2014TheNAVRGITCupCricketTournamentwasheldbetween11thJanuary2015–22ndMarch2015,withthefinalsplayedonSunday,22ndMarch2014,atTWBlakePark,74GowerStreet,Preston.TheeventwasheldwithaFamilydayBBQ.NAVRGITCupCricketTournamentwasorganisedinassociationwithTheHimalayanClub andwith the participation of 7 cricket clubs – Brunswick Blues Cricket Club, Nepalaya Cricket Club,Easter Warrior Cricket Club, Narre Warren Cricket Club, Sagarmatha Cricket Club CC and CCA and theHimalayanCricketClub.NAVPresident Sudhir Shakya& seniormembersof the communitypresented theNAVcupandmedalstothewinners.TheHimalayanClubwasthewinneroftheNAVRGITCupCricket2014,with Brunswick Blues being the runner up. Executive members Tara Gaire and Keshav Kandel jointlycoordinatedtheNAVRGITCupCricketTournament2014.DashainTiharCelebration2014NAVcelebratedDashainTiharFestival2014atCoburgTownHallinCoburgonSaturday,11October2014tocommemorate thenational festive seasonof theNepalese community.ThesignificanceofDashainTihar isthatitemphasisesonthefamilygatherings,andonarenewalofcommunitytiesthroughfoodandfeastforsocialharmony.ThisyearthethemeoftheprogramwasGlobalCulture:LocalCelebration.Theprogramwas full booked with over 300 guests attending the evening event. There were performances by localNepaleseandvariousmulticulturalcommunities.NAVSecretaryManishaRaiwasthecoordinatorofDashainTiharCelebration2014.NAVInterstateSportsMeet2014NAVhostedtheSecondInterstateSportsMeetandGalaDinner2014 inMelbourneon27th ‐28thDecember2014. NAV Nepalese Interstate Sports Meet 2014 successfully concluded with more than 200 playersparticipating from8years to66yearsold andmore than500peopleparticipated indifferent forms fromVictoria,NewSouthWales,Queensland,ACT,SouthAustraliaandNewZealand. Cricket,Golf,TableTennis,TennisandBadmintonwereplayedindifferentcategoriesduringtwodayson27‐28Dec2014atdifferentvenues.AwardstothewinnerswerepresentedatanAwardCeremonyGalaDinnerwhichwasattendedbymorethan375people.Sponsorsandsportmanagementteamwerealsorecognizedfortheirsterlingcontributionattheceremony.WeweregreatlyhonouredbythepresenceofourdistinguishedgueststheMayorofTheCityofYarra, CouncillorMr Philip Vlahogiannis, Honorary Consul General of Nepal for Vic,Mr Chandra Yonzon,ChairpersonoftheEthnicCommunitiesCouncilofVictoria,MrEddieMicallef,CEOofTableTennisVic,MrsAnaKing and StateDirector of BadmintonVic,Mr PeterRoberts. VictoriaStandsTogetherforNepal(VSTFN):NepalEarthquakeAppealOnSaturday,25April2015,Nepalwashitbyamassiveearthquakewiththe7.8magnitude.Thisdevastatingearthquakehasdestroyedmanyworldheritagemonuments,monasteries,buildingsandinfrastructureacrossthecountry.Over8,000liveswerelostandlargenumberofpeopleinjuredandrenderedhomeless.Amid this tragedy, theNon Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Australia (Victoria), Consulate General ofNepal for Victoria, the Nepalese Association of Victoria (NAV) and all Victorian Nepalese communityorganisation,joinedhandstoformanEarthquakeReliefCommittee,VictoriansStandTogetherForNepal,toprovidenecessarysupporttothereliefoperationsinNepal.NAVextendedreliefappealstoallVictorians,businessesandorganisation,fortheirsupportandassistance.Afacebook page: Victorians Stand Together For Nepal (https://www.facebook.com/VictoriansForNepal) toprovideddetailsofourreliefeffort.NAVdirectedalldonorstodeposittheirdonationsintotheNRNAVictoriaaccounttofacilitateswifttransferoffundstoNepal.Theearthquakeappealraisedover$300,000inVictoria.NAV would like to express sincere gratitude to all donors and in particular the volunteers from thecommunitywhocontributedsomuchtothiscause.NepalFestival2014NepaleseAssociationinVictoria(NAV)co‐hostedtheNepalFestival2014inMelbourneonSunday,2ndNovember2014atFederationSquare.NepalFestivalisaninitiativeofNon‐ResidentNepaleseAssociation(NRNA)AustraliawhichisorganisedinVictoriabyVICStateCoordinationCouncil(SCC)ofNon‐ResidentNepaleseAssociation(NRNA)AustraliainassociationwithNAV,ConsulateGeneralofNepaltoVictoria,andEmbassyofNepal,Canberra.TheaimoftheeventistoshowcasetheunityandsolidarityamongsttheNepalesecommunityresidinginVictoria.NAVcontributedatotalof$9000informofVMCgrant NepaleseAssociationofVictoria(NAV)OngoingProjects&ActivitiesMelbourneChautariRadioMelbourneChautariRadioistheonlyNepaleselanguageradioprograminVictoria.TheprogramrunseveryThursday from9:00PM–10.00PMon3CRcommunity radiostationon the frequency855AM.MelbourneChautariiscommittedtobringinfotainmentandentertainmenttotheNepalesepopulationlivinginVictoria.Melbourne Chautari is managed by NAV with a team of volunteers, who are the advisors, ex committeemembers&membersofNepaleseAssociationofVictoria(NAV).BalChautari&CultureClassNAVcontinuedtorunandsupportBalChautari&CultureClassesforthechildrenofNepaleseheritage.Theprogram aims to engage children in cultural activities like Nepalese songs, dances and languages. TheprogramisfundedbythegrantfromDarebinCityCouncilforvenueatDarebinInterculturalCentrePreston.The Program is run every Saturdays. Children from this program have performed in several programsorganisedbyNAV.NepaleseCulturalCentreinVictoriaThe committee form under the NAV continued its discussion forum tomaterialise the vision of NepaleseCulturalCentre inVictoria. In2013,abroadercommitteewas formedpresentingkeyrepresentatives fromthecommunity,includingNRNAVictoria,tomovethisforwardthisproject.In2014,NAVandNRNAAustralia(Victoria)jointlyannouncedtheestablishmentandincorporationofanot‐for‐profitorganisation:AustralianNepaleseMulticulturalCentre(ANMC).ANMCisajointinitiativeofNAVandNRNAAustralia(VIC)supportedby all Nepalese community organisations and passionate individuals. The sole objective of ANMC is toundertaketheresponsibilityofestablishment,operationandmanagementofourowncommunitycentre.Itisvery important to clarify that ANMC is NOT another parallel community organisation but a mutualcollaborationandaspirationofthewholecommunitywithdistinctobjectives.
