ColourSpun Yarn

• The yarn used in this option is ColourSpun 8 Ply DK weight (No. 3 USA). ColourSpun is a South African brand, which we are justifiably very proud of for the following reasons: o ColourSpun yarn is created by hand; therefore, each skein is imbued with the artist's

energy and will have its own unique characteristics. o Cotton is the most used textile fiber in the world. It is a non-allergenic cellulose fiber that

doesn't irritate sensitive skin and is ideal for warmer weather. o ColourSpun Pure Cotton Yarn is ring spun, (a process that gives greater durability while

maintaining softness, making it perfect for knitting and crochet) from the finest quality, locally produced, pure, natural cotton and coloured by hand in the ColourSpun studio using a chemical free, earth-friendly process. All the dyes used are GOTS approved and have excellent wash fast and light fast properties.

Ordering Kits

Please use the order forms located in the tables above to place your order on The Yarn Tree (South Africa). Kindly indicate your colourway preference on the order form. Please contact The Yarn Tree for quantities and prices if you wish to

use an alternative weight yarn or different colours.

Gauge Whilst gauge is less important when making an item such as a throw, it will affect the quantities of yarn required. It is very important to work with a consistent gauge (tension). This is especially true when working with complicated mixtures of stitches and techniques. The best advice I can give is that you lay your work down after each round to ensure that it is lying flat. This is a good indicator that your gauge is correct. There will be times when I will indicate that the work may be a bit wavy while working a section. When I specifically make mention of this, then there is no need to worry – subsequent rounds will correct the “wave”.

ColourSpun Option I used two different hook sizes for this project. This is for the following reasons:

• The main hook size used for this project is the 3.5mm (E/4).

• I tend to work my single crochet stitches quite tightly. The tapestry section is worked in single crochet and I used a 4mm (G/6) hook for this section to adjust my tension slightly. This resulted in the throw lying flat and the corners being sharp;

• Your gauge may be different to mine especially if you are working in yarns other than those specified. As mentioned above, lay the work flat from time to time to check that your gauge is working out. If not, it is quite alright to adjust your hook sizes accordingly.

My gauge - using a 3.5 mm (E/4) hook – Part 1 should measure 25 cm x 45 cm (10 x 17 ¾ inches). My gauge - using a 4.00 mm (G/6) hook – Part 4, the tapestry section, should measure: 10cm (4 in) = 10 rows x 10 sts.

Stylecraft Option I did not make a sample in Stylecraft. My recommendations below are based on my prior experience using this yarn. You should use 4.0 mm [G/6 US size] and 4.5mm [7 US size] hooks for this option. The finished item will be larger than the ColourSpun option.

• The main hook size used for this project would be a 4.0mm (G/6).

• I tend to work my single crochet stitches quite tightly. The tapestry section is worked in single crochet and I would use a 4.5mm (7) hook for this section to adjust my tension slightly.

Hook Size • If you have a loose tension, it is recommended that you adjust your hook sizes down from the

recommended sizes in this pattern.

• If you have a particularly tight tension, you may wish to adjust your hook sizes up.

Blocking

Why Block? It is my considered opinion that blocking of most projects is a very important step towards achieving a professional finish. If you would like to know more about this important process, please download a document I have prepared about this subject.

Difficulty

I have given this pattern an intermediate rating. With the assistance of the video tutorials, I believe that even beginners would be able to easily complete the project, however, you would need to have basic crochet skills, as this is not a “how to crochet” project.

Round 1 Foundation Round With the 3.5 mm hook (ColourSpun) or 4mm hook (Stylecraft) and using colour A. Start with a slip knot on your hook (does not count as your first st), ch40 (not too tight!), work 3dc into 5th ch, (sk 2 sts, 3dc into the next st) 11 times, ch1, sk st, 1dc in last ch. Stitch count: 36dc and two end loops.


Round 2 Using colour A. Sl around the last dc, ch3 to count as the first dc, then into the same end loop work 2dc, ch2, 3dc. (sk the 3dc group, 3dc into the next ch-2 sp between the 3dc groups) 11 times, (3dc, ch2, 3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the corner loop, continue working along the opposite side of the foundation row, (sk the 3dc group, 3dc into the next sp between the 3dc groups) 11 times, into beg corner loop work 3dc, ch2 and join with a sl to the top of the 3rd ch of the beg ch3, or alternatively use an invisible join. you complete each round. 2. Rounds 60 to 79 will be worked in tapestry crochet. Please watch the video tutorial if you

are new to tapestry crochet. 3. Work your sc stitches in the back loop only. This will ensure that the tapestry stays nice and

straight. 4. You will be using two colours for each round. 5. You will carry the colour not in use and work over it, thereby hiding the strands of yarn

within the stitches. You will change colours by completing the last stitch with the new colour.

6. Separate the balls of yarn by placing one ball to your left and the other ball to your right. This will help prevent tangling.

7. You will need to be very careful of having a consistent tension. Don’t pull the carried yarns too tight. They also should not be too loose. Finding the right tension is very important for a professional finish.

Depending upon your gauge/tension, you may benefit from going down half a hook size for the block stitch section. I found it beneficial to do this. You will find that even with adjusting hook size, the edges may be a little wavy. This will correct itself after the next bphdc round – Round 91.

Fish Applique – Make 4


Round 1 Using Colour D. Start with a long tail - ch4 and sl st in the beg ch to form a ring, or alternatively use a magic circle. Ch3 (counts as the beg dc), working over the tail work (ch1, 1dc) 11 times, ch1; join with a sl st to the top of the 3rd chain of beg ch3. Don’t secure the tail end – we will use this for attaching the fish to the blanket. Stitch count: 12dc and 12 ch-1 sps.


Round 2 Using Colour D. Sl st in the sp between the dc spokes on Round 1, ch3 (counts as beg dc), 1dc in the same sp, working in the sps between the spokes (2dc) 11 times; join with a sl st to the top of the 3rd ch of the beg ch3, or alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off and secure ends. Stitch count: 24dc.

Round 3 Using Colour E. Join with a st-sc in any st, (1sc, ch5, 8tc, ch5, 1sc) in the next st, 1sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1hdc in the next st, (1sc, ch3, 1tc) in the next st, 2dc in the next st, 2hdc in the next st, 1sc in each of the next 4 sts, in the next st work (1dc, ch2, 1hdc into the 1dc just made, 1sc into the same st as the last 1dc) 2 times, 1sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1hdc in each of the next 2 sts, ch2, 3dc in the next st, 3tc in the next st, 2dc in the next st. 1hdc in the next st, 1sc in each of the next 2 sts; join with a sl st to the top of the st-sc, or alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off and secure ends. Sew an eye button into position. Buttons can be a choking hazard for babies and small children so please make sure that these are extremely well secured. You could use safety eyes or embroidery as an alternative. Use the tail from your beginning ring to sew the fish into position over the sc corners from Part 2. Stitch count: 12tc, 9dc, 8hdc, 16sc, 2 ch-5 sps, 3 ch-2 sps and 1 ch-3 sp.
