Testing Overview: The purpose of this test was to see how effective the Food Freshness Card is at extending the shelf life of produce by inhibiting the growth of mold and bacteria. One way to measure this is by taking time-lapse pictures of produce that is in close proximity to the Food Freshness Card and comparing it to aging produce that has not been exposed to the Food Freshness Card. The Food Freshness card has a large range of efficacy, so the cards were never closer than 50 feet from the control samples. In order to avoid cross contamination of the samples, the control and tested groups were positioned in different rooms that were approximately 50 feet apart. Each room had the exact same setup as each other, they were both temperature and humidity controlled at 55 ± 2 oF and 35 ± 5% humidity. The lights were kept on at all times in order for the time-lapse cameras to be able to take consistent pictures. The rooms remained sealed and were opened minimal times throughout the testing process. The produce was bought at the same time, from the same store, made by the same manufacturer, and had the same expiration date (when one was provided). All produce was handled with gloves and tested on sanitized plates on a clean testing table that was covered with a table cloth. All of the tomatoes tested were originally on one vine, the vine was cut into sections in order to split the test and control samples. Testing Procedure:

1. Position Food Freshness card in testing room. 2. Buy 8 tomatoes at the grocery store that are all on the same vine, make sure they are all defect free and

have no signs of spoilage. 3. Bring all tomatoes to the to the control testing room while making sure they do not get near the Food

Freshness Cards. 4. Cut the tomato vines and portion the tomatoes, 4 for the control and 4 for testing the Food Freshness

Cards. 5. Bring the tomatoes in their respective testing rooms. 6. Position the tomatoes on new, sanitized/clean plates under the time-lapse cameras. 7. Position the Food Freshness Card under one of the plates. 8. Record pictures every 4 hours until both tested samples have spoiled.

Observations: Sources for error on this test were brought to a minimum by using: tomatoes that were all from the same vine and free of defects, a sealed room with minimal entry, tables and plates were all clean and sanitary, careful handling with gloves of the produce, and a temperature/ humidity controlled room. Only one out of the four Tomatoes that were tested with the Food Freshness Card showed visual signs of mold or bacteria, while three out of the four control tomatoes showed signs. This equated to only 25% of the tomatoes tested with the Food Freshness Card showing signs of mold or bacteria, while the control tomatoes had 75% showing signs of mold or bacteria. The tomatoes tested with the Food Freshness Card lasted on average 39 days before showing signs of mold or bacteria (most of them did not show any signs), compared to the control tomatoes which lasted on average 22 days. This equated to approximately a 76% increase in the time it took to see signs of mold or bacteria while using the Food Freshness Card. The data from this test showed that the average time it took for mold to develop on tomatoes was almost doubled from the use of the Food Freshness Card and the amount of tomatoes that showed signs of mold was brought down 3 times.
