AIDS

In Minneapolis a drug tleveloped from the leaves of an otherwise

poisonous weed appears to be 1000 times more potent than the drug

AZT in destroying the AIDS virus" researchers made this statement

in 1990.

The tlniversity of Minnesota said the drug contains a virus-fighting

protein from the new leaves of pokeweed, a perennial American

herb. When used alone, the protein inhibited the production of the

AIDS virus in those cells in the immur{e system that harbor the

virus, the researchers said. When coupled with monoclonal

antibodies, inhibition of the AIDS virus production was increased

as much as 1,000 fold.
