Contraindications and Concerns:

Preparation Techniques and Tips:

1. First Appointment (ClinicalExamination and Study ModelImpression)

A. Conduct a complete clinical examinationincluding Periapical and Panoramicx-rays.

B. Take a high quality alginate impression(e.g., Accu-Dent System 2 from CerumDental Supplies Ltd.) for both maxillaryand mandibular arches. Pour completedimpressions in high strength laboratorystone to create accurate Study Modelswithin 5 minutes of impression-taking.Take a bite registration.

C. Provide a complete prescription includingusual information pertaining to patientand treatment plan. Send prescription,study models and bite registration tolaboratory. The laboratory will returnmounted study models and bite rims (ifbite registration wafers are not sufficient)for next appointment.

2. Second Appointment (ToothPreparation and Final Impression)

A. Restore the dentition where necessary.Prepare the teeth for rests, guide planes,occlusal room, retention, etc. as indicatedby the design.

B. Using high quality alginate (e.g., Accu-Dent System 2 from Cerum DentalSupplies Ltd.), take a final impression(NOTE: If the opposing model isdamaged, take a new impression of thisas well). Pour completed impression(s) inhigh strength laboratory stone within fiveminutes of impression-taking to createfinal Master Model.

C. Send complete prescription, mastermodel, opposing model, bite registration,articulator and final design to laboratory.Laboratory will return a framework fortry-in.

3. Third Appointment (Evaluation andTry-In)

A. Examine laboratory-supplied frameworkon master model mounted, along withopposing model, on articulator suppliedby laboratory. Also examine frameworkby itself.

B. Insert the framework into the mouth andevaluate it for rest and clasp fit, adaptationto abutment teeth, occlusal interference,relief areas and overall stability.

C. Place disclosing agent on framework. Ifnecessary, adjust framework with carbideburs while in the mouth to relieve areaswhere the framework binds. Repeatprocess if necessary. Adjust opposingdentition with diamonds, burs andpolishing points. Polish relieved areaswith rubber points and wheels. Confirmocclusal relationship with wax bite rim orwafer.

D. Select tooth shade and mould accordingto patient needs and established guide-lines.

E. Send laboratory prescription, toothselection information, framework onmaster model and articulator withopposing model. Laboratory will returnteeth set up on framework for nextappointment.

4. Fourth Appointment (Esthetic andFunctional Try-In)

A. Examine framework (with teeth now inplace) on master model, on articulatorwith opposing model and in the mouth.

B. Evaluate functional aspects of frameworkintraorally. Check rest and clasp fit,adaptation to teeth, occlusal interference,relief areas and overall stability. Adjust asnecessary.

C. Evaluate esthetic aspects of frameworkintraorally. Check esthetics of teeth,shade match and occlusion. Adjust teethif necessary.

D. Discuss acceptance of framework design,placement and shade of teeth and overallesthetics with patient. Have patient signacceptance form for completion.

E. Return prescription, patient approvedframework with teeth and articulator tolaboratory. Laboratory will returnfinished NaturalFlex II partial forinsertion.

5. Fifth Appointment (Final Insertion)

A. Examine complete finished partial.

B. Find an easy path of insertion and insertpartial into mouth. Evaluate occlusion,function and esthetics. Check lateral andprotrusive excursions. Adjust asnecessary.

C. Apply pressure indicating paste to tissueside of acrylic saddles. Reinsert partialinto mouth, check for pressure spots andadjust.

D. Demonstrate appliance insertion andremoval to patient. Patient MUST be ableto perform these before leaving office.Instruct patient in appliance managementand care.
