Natural resources

‘Anything’ in the environment ‘which can be used’ is called a ‘natural resource.’Some of oue important resources natural resources are: Foresta, wildlife, Wildlife, Coal & Petroleum. A system of controlling the use of natural resources in such a way as to avoid their wastage and to use them in the most effective way, is called management of natural resources.

FORESTS AND WILDLIFEA large are of land which trees and other

plants grow naturally is called a forest. And the wild animals (like lion, tiger, elephant, deer, snakes, etc..) and birds which live in a forest, are called wildlife. One of the main aim of management of forests and wildlife is to conserve the biodiversity which we have inherited.

4 MAIN STAKEHOLDERSA person with an interest or concern in

something is called a stakeholder.1. The people who live in and around the

forest & are dependent on forests produce to lead their life.

2. The forest department of the government which owns the forests land and control the resources from forests.

3. The industrialists who use various forest products for their factories, such as wood for making paper n furniture etc.

4. The forest and wildlife activists who want to see the forests in their pristine form .

SOME MOVEMENTS TO SAVE FORESTS…..

The Chipko Movement …originated from an incident in a remote village called reni in Garhwal, high up in the himalyas in the early 1970s. A logging contractor had been allowed to cut down trees in a forests close to village but the people of the village didn’t want it to happen to

save their healthy environment. One day when the men were at work , the contractor’s workers came in the forests to cut down the trees but the women og the village reached the forest quickly & clapsed the tree trunks with their arms, preventing the workers from cutting down the

WATER FOR ALL Water is the basic necessity for all forms

of life, Human beings, animals as well as plants. So conservation of water is necessary.

The various sourcesOf water which are Available to us areRains, rivers , lakes,, ponds etc.

DAMS

•In order to make proper use of river , water, dams are constructed across the river to regulate the flow of water. Bhakra dam is one such dam which has been built across the river sutluj in punjab in our country.

Uses of Dams1. Water from a dam is used for irrigation in fields

fields through network of canals.2 Water from a dam is supplied to the people in towns and cities through pipelines after suitable treatment . 3 The falling water from the dam is used

for generating electricity.

Pollution of River water

The water is most of our rivers is highly polluted. The pollution of river water is caused by the dump ingng of untreated sewage & indu

str strial wastes into it. The contamin ation of river water can be usually found from two factors: the presence

of coliform bacteria in river water and measurement of ph of river water.

Rain Water Harvesting

Rain water harvesting is an age old practice in India. Water harvesting techniques used depend on the location where it is to be used. Some og the ancient ‘water harvesting structures’ used is different rural regions of our country are given below:

REGION Ancient water harvesting structure1. Rajasthan khadin, tanks, nadis2. Maharashtra bandharas, tals3. BIHAR Ahars &pyers4. Kerala surangams

COAL & PETROLIUM

Coal & petroleum are called fossil fuels.Coal & petroleum are the natural resources which are important “SOURCES OF ENERGY” for us.coal is used as a fuel as such in homes & in industry,or it is used to generate electricity at THERMAL POWER PLANTS.Coal & petroleum were formed from the degradation of biomass of plants & animals, buried deep under the earth millions of years ago.

STEPS TO REDUCE THE CONSUMPTION OF COAL AND PETROLEUM1. Switch off the lights ,fans ,TV & other electrical

appliances. This will save a lot of electricity.2.Use energy efficient electrical appliances to

save electricity. For ex. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL).

3. Use stairs to climb up to two or three floors instead of lift.

4. Solar cookers should be used to cook where possible.

5.The use of biogas as domestic fuuel should be encouraged in rural areas.
