    Losing Weight

    SPECIAL HEALTH REPORT

  • The question many middle-aged people ask is why they keep accumulating body fat when they’re eating far less than they did when they were younger. Scientists have identified a number of biological factors to explain age-related weight gain. And therein lies the problem. With so many causes at work, it’s far more difficult to lose that extra weight than most of us realize.

The good news is that there are now more weight-loss compounds available to neutralize those factors than ever before. And in controlled clinical studies, each of those natural compounds has demonstrated modest to impressive fat-loss effects. But the trick here is to combine them in a multi-pronged program to circumvent multiple factors involved in excess age-related fat storage.

So let’s take a look at some of the factors that make you fat and keep you fat … and how you can effectively neutralize them.

Burn fat better. It’s a fact. As you age, cellular energy expenditure slows. Instead of burning fat effectively to be used as energy, you store more of it in your fat cells (adipocytes). And scientists have found that this decrease in energy expenditure may cause 120–190 excess calories to be stored in the body every day1 … which translates to an extra 13–20 pounds of stored body fat each year!

  • According to a number of published studies, one way to increase fat burning is by supplementing with green tea extracts. The key components responsible for green tea’s weight-loss benefits are polyphenol compounds that increase metabolic energy expenditure … so you burn more calories.2-6

A unique green tea phytosome tested on human subjects demonstrated rapid and substantial weight loss effects. After 45 days, the control group using only a restricted calorie diet and no supplements lost four pounds on average … while the group supplementing with green tea lost 13 pounds on average. And after 90 days, the control group lost 9.9 pounds, while the green tea group shed 30.1 pounds.7 In addition, those receiving the green tea dropped their BMI (body mass index) by a whopping 12% (compared to 5% in the control group)7… and reduced their waist sizes by 10% (compared to 5% in the control group).7

But the weight loss benefits of green tea extracts don’t stop at fat burning. Green tea polyphenols have also been shown to inhibit the breakdown and absorption of fat in the digestive tract and to reduce fat storage in fat cells.2,8-10

Overcome leptin resistance. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that helps keep your body lean. It works by signaling your brain to turn off hunger messages because you’ve eaten enough. Leptin also increases the breakdown of fat stored in fat cells, so it can be burned as energy.

Now, as we age, our cells (including the appetite control center in our brains) become leptin-resistant. That means that leptin is no longer able to effectively regulate body weight.

Leptin resistance is a chronic inflammatory condition that contributes directly to progressive weight gain, makes it harder to lose weight, and ensures that you’re bound to regain any weight you do lose. Extra weight that puts you at increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, cancer, a stroke,11 even dementia.12

Being chronically overweight leads to chronically elevated leptin levels, and chronically elevated leptin causes fat cells and brain neurons to lose their capacity to respond to it. So normal fat burning within fat cells declines significantly and neurons in the hypothalamus show decreased responsiveness to leptin. 13

So what can you do to correct this Catch-22? Well, for starters, exercise

  • more regularly; avoid high-sugar, high fat, highly processed foods; and supplement with irvingia African mango extract … which tends to correct leptin resistance, facilitate the breakdown of stored body fat, and help keep the carbs you eat from being broken down and absorbed. In short, irvingia promotes weight loss along with some pretty healthy side benefits.

In fact, in a double-blind study, overweight people who supplemented with irvingia extract lost over 25 pounds on average in 10 weeks.14 Their body fat percentage dropped over 18% on average and their waistlines decreased over 6 inches on average.14 Their cholesterol, LDL, C-reactive protein, and fasting glucose levels also dropped.

It’s no wonder that the local tribes of West Africa, who have included the cooked fruit of this mango plant in their daily diets for centuries, are comprised of pretty lean and healthy folk!

Trim that belly fat.Unfortunately, with age our fat cells tend to expand and congregate in areas that are both unsightly and unhealthy. Of greatest concern are the fat storage cells deep in the abdomen. This “visceral fat” represents more than just belly

fat stored around the waist. Visceral fat is chemically active tissue that churns out a torrent of pro-inflammatory cytokines15 that trigger metabolic syndrome (also known as “pre-diabetes”) and its deadly consequences.16,17

This widespread problem led scientists to seek out plant extracts that specifically interfere with the storage of fat in abdominal fat cells. It was found that blending the extracts of the flower S. indicus and the mangosteen fruit (both native to Asia) inhibited fat storage and enhanced fat breakdown and release … thus promoting weight loss three ways. This phyto-blend prevented young fat cells from maturing. It reduced the amount of

fat that could be stored. And it sped up the breakdown of fat already stored in existing fat cells.

In a human weight loss study of 60 obese adults, 30 were given 800 mg a day of this dual plant extract while the other 30 were given a placebo. Both groups followed a 2,000 calorie-per-day diet and were asked to walk for 30 minutes five times a week. After eight weeks, the group taking this natural blend lost 11.4 pounds (3.7 times greater than the placebo group) and 4.05 inches of harmful belly fat (two times more than the placebo group).18

In a second similar study,19 the results were virtually the same … validating yet again the weight

  • loss and health benefits of supplementation with this natural phyto-blend.

Lower your blood sugar to shed extra pounds. There is extensive evidence that a high level of coffee consumption lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes by 67%.20 The reason for this anti-diabetic effect appears to be reduced levels of blood glucose, increased insulin sensitivity, and decreased storage of fat and carbohydrate. All achieved with chlorogenic acid, the compound in green coffee beans that inhibits both the absorption of glucose21 and the enzyme that breaks down starch into sugar.9

Clearly the less sugar you absorb, the less sugar your body will convert to fat. So reducing glucose

levels leads to a decrease in intestinal calorie uptake.22, 23

Chlorogenic acid also reduces dangerous after-meal glucose spikes that can last hours or even a whole day.24 That lowers insulin activity and fat accumulation.25

In a placebo-controlled human study of extremely overweight individuals, 350 mg of a green coffee bean extract high in chlorogenic acid ingested 3 times daily for 12 weeks induced weight loss of over 17.6 pounds on average … with some participants losing more than 22 pounds!23 And 37% of the participants involved reversed their status back to the normal weight range!23 These results confirm that green coffee bean extract is another unique and potent intervention for weight loss.
