Speak out. “Don’tbeafraid to askquestions,” Fishman emphasizes; getto the class early, introduce yourselftotheteacherandperhapsauditvariousclasses. Good instructors always askstudents about their health and fitnesshistory. Look for special needs groups. “Youcan get really specific in choosing therightyogaclass, whetheritfocusesonbackcare or other therapeutic yoga,” notesNardini. Exercise caution. Certain areas ofthebody, liketheback, neckandlimbs, areparticularlypronetoinjury, counselsHartman.“Twistingandcontortingposescan cause undue pressure,” so takethingsslowlyandstopifpainoccurs. Practice correct alignment.Expertsagree that proper alignment is key toinjury-freeyoga.“There’salottoproperalignment; it’s integral to being a yogateacher,”saysFishman.Agoodonewillwalktheroomtomakesureeveryonehasthecorrect form, keeping thevertebraemoreor less in line, even ina twistingpose. Seek modifying options.Instructorsmust teach modifications in poses toaccommodatetheindividual, oftenusingpropssuchasblocksandstraps. Learn to breathe.Properbreathingcannot be overemphasized. “Kripalu’steaching methodology, for example, emphasizescoordinatingmovementwith

A t eache r w i th sucha background knows not only howmusclesmove, butalsohowtheymovetogether. Experts in yoga understandkinesiology—the natural synergies andlimits to muscle and joint movement, according to Fishman. Nardini furtheremphasizes the importanceof teachingtransitionsbetweenposes. symptomsinsteadofdiseases, explainsLosAngelesfunctionalmedicinepractitionerDr. Hyla Cass, author of 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health: A Take Charge Plan for Women. “Ittendstotreatthesymptomswith more and more medications thatcause a host of other side effects thatalsoneedtobetreatedandcanresultindeclining health, rather than increasedvitality.”

“Functional medicine, rather thansimply‘chasingsymptoms’whileignoringthe causes, searches for and addressesenvironmental factors, nutritionaldeficiencies, genetic tendencies, biochemicaldysfunctionsandemotionaland social stressors that can togethercause the development of symptoms,”addsDr.AdielTel-Oren.HeoperatesEco-Health Clinics internationally (the U.S.site is in Minneapolis, Minnesota) andservesaspresidentemeritusandprofessorofnutritionandfunctionalmedicinewiththeCalifornia-basedUniversityofNaturalMedicine. Teitelbaum notes, “Conventionalmedicineisbasicallyrunoneconomics,so doctors are too often influenced bydrug company marketing messagesmasqueradingassciencethatencourageexpensivetreatments, regardlessoftheirtoxicity.” In stark contrast, “Functionalmedicineinsteadlooksforthelowestcosttreatment that is supported by medicalevidence.”

Conventional Medicine Case in PointFibromyalgia, forexample, encompassesabasketofsymptoms, usuallybeginningwithoverallbodypainwithspecificpainpoints. It’sdifficulttodeterminehowmanyAmericans suffer from fibromyalgiabecause many go und iagnosed( the average t ime f rom onset ofsymptoms to diagnosis is five years).Cure4Fibromyalgia.com estimates that5millionAmericans,orapproximately2percentofthepopulation,sufferfromthisdisease.
