Earthandone’sownhealth,reportscientistsfromImperialCollegeLondon,inEngland.Theresearchersexaminedfouryearsofdatafromthecountry’sDe-partmentforTransportNationalTravelSurveybegin-ningin2005,theyearbeforefreebuspasseswereavailableforpeopleages60andolder.Thestudyteamfoundthatthosewithapassweremorelikelytowalkfrequentlyandtakemorejourneysby“activetravel”—definedaswalking,cyclingorusingpublictransport. Stayingphysicallyactivehelpsmaintainmentalwell-being,mobilityandmusclestrengthinolderpeopleandreducestheirriskofcardiovasculardisease,fallsandfractures.PreviousresearchbyTai-wan’sNationalHealthResearchInstitutespublishedinThe Lancethasshownthatjust15minutesof

Getting the Lead OutTheU.S.CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention

Mostleadpoisoningcasesoccurinsubstandardhousingunits,especiallythosewithwindowframesstillcoatedwithlead-basedpaintbannedsince1978.Familiesindwellingsbuiltbefore1950shouldalsobevigilantaboutlead.TheConsumerProductsSafetyCommissioncautionsthathomeleadtestkitssoldonlineandathardwarestoresmaynotbereliableenoughtoidentifyandremovesourcesofexposure.Professionalcontractorsoffermoreaccurateresults. Isn’t there often a conflict between what people believe and what they do?Weeachcontainacomplexecosystemwithinus.Themorewecanbecomeconsciousofcultivatingourselvestobeauthenticallyandfullyinheartfeltservicetowhatwelove,thebetterwecanshowuponbehalfoftheEarthandthepeopleandcreatureswithwhomweshareitashome.

Do you see women playing a particular role in this transformation?Whileeverypersonisauniquemixofbothmasculineandfemininequali-ties,Ithinkthatwomenasawholehaveadeeplyembeddedcodingthatinclinesustobeespeciallystrongincaring,compassionandcollaboration.Asleadershipcapacities,Ibelievethesethree—andconnectingacrossdifferenc-es—maybeamongthemostessentialtoresilience.Ourfutureasaspecieswillclearlybenefitfrommorewomenfindingtheirvoice,truthandconnec-tionstopower. Telling TransformationPapert’sobservationswereaffirmedbymiddleschoolstudentsatVoyagers’CommunitySchool,inFarmingdale,NewJersey,inoneoftheIHE10-weekonlineclasses—MostGood,LeastHarm—inApril2012.“Initially,studentswereintimidatedandunderestimatedtheirabilitytoexpresstheirthoughtsandconcernsordebateissueswiththeadultpartic-ipants.Thatchallengefadedquickly,”remarksKarenGiuffre,founderanddirectoroftheprogressivedayschool. Posingprovocativequestionslike,“Whatbringsyoujoy?”andengaginginconversationsinsubjectslikeclimatechange,racism,recycling,greenenergy,genocideandwarchal-lengedthestudentstostepuptobecomerespectedequals.“Thisdemandedalotfromtheseyoungpeople,becausetheexperiencewasn’tonlyaboutabsorbingcomplexissuesanddevelopinganawarenessofthematerial,political,economicandculturalworldaroundthem.Itwasalsoabouthowtheyprobedtheirmindsandemotionstodeterminewheretheystoodonissuesandwhattheycoulddotochangetheirlife-style,orthatoftheirfamilyandcommunity,tomakeitmoresustainable,”saysGiuffre. Thestudentswentontohelporganizeapeaceconfer-encethatentailed20-plusworkshopstoinspireanindividualmindfulawarenessofpeacethatmotivatesandempowersthepeacemakerwithin.Itwasintendedtoincitecollectiveactionacrossgenerations,explainsGiuffre,andwasfollowedbycommunityservicetopeopleimpactedbyHurricaneSandy.
