  • REFLECTIONS – Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Human beings always like pat answers. We want things to go according to an orderly plan - preferably one we have designed. We like to think we know exactly what God wants of ourselves and others. The problem is that God doesn’t work within our rules. Things seldom work out just as we intended. We need to trust that they are still part of God’s plan. Reflect on how much you try to control your world and how willing you are to let God be in control. Can you recall a time when you were able to admit you could not control things and put yourself in God’s hands? What can you do to learn to trust God more?

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” - Psalm 90:12 Reprinted with permission from S.T. Productions.

THE HOLY SPIRIT This Bible study looks at the Holy Spirit in Scripture, beginning with the Old Testament and moving through the New Testament. In eight sessions we examine: the role of the Holy Spirit in creation; how authority and power come from the Spirit; how the Spirit worked in the lives of the prophets; the Spirit as the giver of wisdom, guidance, and truth; the Spirit as part of the Trini-ty, empowerment and the Spirit; and finally, the Spirit in lives of Christian believers. Please contact Brenda Romero (365-3759) to order a study guide or to sign up for the Tuesday morning (9-10:30am) or Thursday evening (6:05-7:35) discussion group. Sessions begin Septem-ber 10th & 12th respectively.

HAPPY FEAST DAY NATIVITY OF OUR LADY

    Sunday, September 8th

The Diocese of Lafayette has partnered with Francis-can University in Steubenville, Ohio, to give every-one in the diocese access to workshops that can help in their religious formation. Although some of the workshops are geared toward teachers, many simply give information on topics that many of us want to know more about (i.e. the Eucharist, Mary, New Testament, Old Testament). All you have to do is go to www.franciscanathome.com/diolaf to begin to cre-ate your account. The office of Catechetics has a short 3 minute video on their webpage that will di-rect you on how to create an account. Our parish has already been placed in the system, so all you have to do is create your personal account. We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for us to grow in our faith.

A Senior's Prayer Good and gracious God, I thank you for the gift of life. You have given me so many good things over its course: health of mind and body, friends and family, strengths and weaknesses, sorrows and joys. You have ordained that seasons change and time passes. Help me to surrender graciously to the changing circumstances of my life. Help me to accept my weaknesses, and to see them as opportunities for others to show the love of Jesus. Make me strong in Your spirit, that I may love You all the days of my life.

    Amen.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Q: As Catholics, we talk a lot about "redemptive suffering" and "carrying your cross." What does that mean practically in daily life? A: When Jesus spoke these words, they would have sounded quite intense to his hearers. "Pick up your cross daily and follow me." At the time, Jesus hadn't yet been crucified. A cross was a Roman torture in-strument. "Pick up the thing that tortures you the most," Jesus seemed to say. Unfortunately, most of us have no real shortage of these in our life. To take up the cross isn't to seek out new sufferings in our life. It's to accept the life we have. Of course, unjust or unhealthy circumstances should be rectified when possible. But there are al-ways circumstances that remain out of our immediate control. It could be pain management, the defiance of our teenage child, or an unhealthy work environ-ment ... but you need the paycheck to pay the bills. In difficult circumstances, it can be easier to blame, com-plain, or daydream our way out of it. None of these are real solutions, since none of them accept the reality of the situation at hand. Those options only add to our suffering, since they damage relationships, fixate on the problem, or set up unrealistic expectations. Instead, Jesus invites us to take up our cross - to look at the uncomfortable situation square in the eyes, take a deep breath, and do our best to be present to God's grace in the moment - to love those in our path, to take things one step at a time.
