for personal and planetary well-being. Greening our homes, gardens, and communities benefits us locally and has an impact globally.

The Chesapeake Ecology Center (CEC) promotes community greening/sustainable living practices through a variety of

educational initiatives and through various media. We take action via habitat restoration projects. Our initial focus on installing restoration projects has expanded to include a range of green living topics.

The CEC has installed a variety of habitat restoration projects at many locations in the region and at the CEC. On-the-ground examples of our conservation landscaping initiatives—including 24 Native Plant Demonstration Gardens and Groves—can be seen on the grounds of J. Albert Adams Academy, 245 Clay Street, Annapolis, Maryland, where we are based. However, since we are located at a middle school, regular visiting hours during the school year are after 4:30 p.m. and anytime on the weekends and during the summer.

DIRECTIONS FROM ROUTE 50: Take Exit 24 Rowe Blvd. toward Annapolis; turn right on Taylor Ave. (just past the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium); turn left onto Glenwood St. (0.42 miles); Glenwood St. becomes Clay St.; turn left into the parking lot.

It is possible to “Live Well” and “Green,” that is, to live a materially comfortable, non-exploitative and peaceful life, while protecting and restoring the environment. Living a “green” lifestyle doesn’t mean living without the material comforts of life. It does, however, require environmental awareness and conscientious decision-making, limiting excessive consumption, and taking action to protect and restore our environment.

“What people don’t understand, they won’t value. And what they don’t value, they won’t protect; what they don’t protect they will lose.”

— Charles R. Jordan
