Alhamdulillah I’m really glad wedid the NZF Winter Challenge as afamily. The kids enjoyed theirtime, they saw homeless peopleon the way and we talked about why we should help. It was tough walking in therain, but I realised how lucky we were that there would be hot food waiting for usafterwards. For most homeless people that is a luxury.Sumaiya, Challenge participant

Zakat Fund:the cornerstone of NZFThe core service of the National ZakatFoundation is to receive and process anapplication from anyone in the UKexperiencing financial distress. This involvesassessing and verifying the details of theapplication; communicating with theindividual in need as well as his/her statedreferees; providing intelligent support andadvice to help the individual becomesustainable; preparing a case report with arecommendation for financial assistance forsubmission to the decision-making panel;distributing support in a timely andappropriate manner if the application isapproved.

Alhamdulillah in 2012, we were able toprocess 259 applications, distributing£313,000 of support as a lifeline to those inneed with many of our applicants havingfaced very difficult circumstances, includinghomelessness, hunger, domestic violence, isolation and abandonment.

A Turkish brother calledHikmet contacted NZFfrom just outside Manchester inDecember not long after he left prisonpenniless and homeless, with nowhereto turn for support. With the support oflocal volunteers, we helped him intosustainable accommodation andprovided the means for him to acquiresome basic essentials, including atoothbrush and toothpaste! Thissupport enabled him to focus onfinding a job to look after himself.

A week later, Hikmet called the team toinform us that he had found a job in alocal restaurant and he put in arequest for a small amount ofadditional money for appropriateclothes to wear to work.

This case study is a fantastic exampleof how just a small, targetedintervention can help a vulnerableindividual back on their feet and on theroad to leading a better life.
