INVITATION The National Symposium on “Behavioural ecology: molecules to organisms” will be organized by the Ecophysiology Thrust area of the Centre of Advanced Study, Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (U.P.), in association with the Ethological Society of India, during 7-9 November, 2014. The members of the organizing committee take pleasure in inviting you to participate in this symposium. The symposium would cover wide ranging topics on recent advances in Behavioural Ecology.

OBJECTIVES Behavioural ecology explores how the environment comprising the biological, social and the physical components, influences an organism’s behaviour. The diversity of research in this field encompasses community ecology, conservation behaviour, social evolution, physiology, cognitive ecology, and molecular ethology etc. The causes and consequences of both individual and social behaviours are being investigated from multidisciplinary perspectives. Ecological, physio-logical, genomic and molecular approaches are being adopted to understand the proximate and ultimate mechanisms that determine behaviour. Hence, the present conference aims to provide an interactive platform for sharing our knowledge, assessing the advances and exploring new approaches. Research in the area of Behavioural ecology is vital for conservation of endangered species, insect pest management including pests of public health importance and in formulating animal welfare programmes.

VENUE The Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University is one of the oldest and the most active centres of learning in the country, offering under graduate and post graduate teaching and research programmes in zoology. In recognition of the high level of attainments in teaching and research, the Department has been elevated to the Centre of Advanced Study by the UGC. The department has also been supported by COSIST (UGC), FIST (DST) and extramural research funding from various national and international agencies.

BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY The University was founded in 1916 by the great visionary, nationalist, educationalist and freedom fighter, late Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. It is the second largest residential university in the world and the largest in Asia. It has four Institutes, 14 Faculties and 140 Departments. It is spread over 1700 acres of land on the banks of the holy Ganges. The University has another campus, the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, spread over 2700 acres of land at Barkachha, Mirzapur, about 80 kms from Varanasi.

FOCAL AREAS Behavioural Endocrinology Behavioural neurobiology Biological rhythms Cognitive ecology Conservation behaviour Ecophysiology Insect-plant interactions Molecular ethology HOW TO REACH VARANASI Varanasi is well connected from all the important cities in India. The venue of the conference is about 37 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, 10 km from Varanasi Cantt railway station, and 25 km from Mughal Sarai railway station.
