environment due to Covid,GMR’s focus is on reducingdebt and improving cashflow and profitability.

Strong growth driversAfter its first quarter num-bers and ahead of its 24th An-nual General Meeting, thecompany management, through its InvestorsPresentation, and the GroupChairman GM Rao, in his ad-dress to shareholders, indic-ated how its airports busi-ness, with majorinvestments, is well poisedfor the next phase of growth.“In line with our strategy,

we believe that in spite of theongoing turbulence, the air-port business has huge un-derlying strength and willcontinue to be the growthengine for the Group. Thefundamental long-termgrowth drivers for the Indianeconomy and aviation sectorremain intact and strong. Weare actively pursuing suit-able airport opportunities inIndia as well as globally,” GMRao Chairman, GMR Group, said in the company annualreport. The company operates In-

dira Gandhi InternationalAirport at Delhi, Rajiv GandhiInternational Airport at Hy-derabad in India and MactanCebu International Airportin the Philippines. It has twoassets under development —Greenfield Airport at Mopa,Goa and Crete InternationalAirport in Greece where it isbeing executed with Greekpartner TERNA Group. It hasalso bagged few other air-port projects that includeBhogapuram and Bidar. The Hyderabad airport ex-

pansion, which has been wellfunded, is insulated in thenear term from the disrup-tions caused by the pan-demic. “Further, to ensure ju-dicious use of funds duringthe pandemic, we continueto look at partially reschedul-ing future capital expendit-ure,” he said. For the Delhi airport, GMR

had raised $350 million fromoverseas bond of 10 yearstenor and followed it up byraising additional $150 mil-lion. “However, to ensureprudent use of funds during

the pandemic, we have con-sidered postponing parts ofplanned capital expenditureto subsequent periods,” Raoinformed shareholders. The airports in India were

witness to a strong growthmomentum, which was dis-rupted due to Covid, neces-sitating caution in capexspend.

Energy segmentIn the energy sector, in linewith the effort towards li-quidity enhancement anddebt reduction, it managedto execute the debt resolu-tion plan for GMR Rajahmun-dry Energy Limited and con-cluded divestment of GMRChhattisgarh Energy Lim-ited. The gas-based assets ofthe company are well suitedfor round-the-clock clean en-ergy by bundling with re-newable which has receivedgovernment focus recently.According to the company,

the cash flow from thermalassets is sufficient to servicedebt, there are strong pro-spects for divestment ofthermal assets given im-proved performance. And forthe monetisation of BargePlant, an agreement has

been signed and partial con-sideration received. On the highways, it plans

to pare its debt following afavourable judgment in anarbitration claim on Hydera-bad-Vijayawada and ChennaiORR4. The monetisation togain momentum post arbit-ration claim settlement.

Coal assetsWith regard to its coal assets,it plans to re-start the pro-cess of divestment once coalprices stabilise. The company also sees po-

tential to monetise its vari-ous land assets at the air-ports and also its assets instrategic industrial locations— GMR Krishnagiri Special In-vestment Region and Kakin-ada SEZ Limited to benefitfrom manufacturing disloca-tion from China. It has a poolof about 10,500 acre that hassignificant potential to un-lock large latent value.During the AGM slated to

be held on September 21, itplans to seek shareholdersnod for an enabling resolu-tion to raise up to ₹5,000crore in one or more tranche(s), through issue ofsecurities.

The Supreme Court’s decisionto allow 10 years to pay AGRdues will prevent VodafoneIdea from shutting down im-mediately, but itwill have todomultiple things to stay alive ina highly competitive telecommarket.

Vodafone Idea has to pay₹53,000 crore to the Centre, which means it will have tofork out over ₹5,000 crore ayear just to pay past AGR dues.In addition, the operator willhave to fund its current pay-ments towards licence fees, spectrum usage charges, be-sides capital expenditure to-wardsnetwork roll out. Theop-erator’s balance sheet will behighly leveraged tomake freshinvestments into network roll-out or acquiring fresh spec-trum.

It is expected that the Centrewill hold 5G spectrum auctionsometimenext year and, goingby theexisting reserveprice forthe airwaves, Vodafone Ideamayfind it difficult to particip-ate inabiddingprocess inviewof the already large debt on itsbooks.

Ringing in tougher times“The Supreme Court ordermeans that Vodafone Idea willnot die now but if it wants tosurvive in the long term, it willhave to increase tariffs imme-diately. No where in the worldyouwould get 15-16 GB data forjust $2 a month. This will haveto increase to at least $7 amonth. Airtel has already saidit wants to increase tariffs andReliance Jio, with a zero debt

balance sheet, would focus ondelivering better customer ex-perience instead of competingon pricing,” said Sanjay Ka-poor, formerCEOof Airtel.

Material impactWith theAGRoutflows likely tohave a material impact oncashflows of telcos, analysts atJefferies equity research expecta minimum 10 per cent tariffhike in the near term. “Assum-ing an incremental EBITDAmargin of 65 per cent, to com-pletelyoffset the impactof AGRdues, Bharti Airtel will have toincrease ARPUs by 10 per centand Vodafone Idea by 27 percent,” analysts at Jefferies said.Other analysts said that to

get to cash flow breakeventhrough price increases re-quires Vodafone Idea to tripleits EBITDA. To achieve thisthrough price alone would re-quire an average revenue peruser of ₹275 compared to ₹114now. “This would require com-plete focus on execution. Cus-tomer experience and serviceswillhavetobetheprimedriver.Vodafone Idea could stop servi-cing low paying customers al-togethereven if thatmeans los-ing subscriber market share,”said an industry expert.Vodafone Idea’s revenue

market share has dippedsharply to 21 per cent duringthe June quarter, nearly half of

what it was in FY17. Marketshare shifts continued towardsReliance Jio and Bharti Airtelwith both operators gaining470 basis points (bps) and 200bps market share versus theirFY20 levels to38percentand33percent, respectively.VodafoneIdea’s revenue market sharelosses are no longer just beingdriven by its weaker markets.DuringQ1, 60 per cent of Voda-fone Idea’s 5.8 percentagepoint (ppt) market share losscame from its top-3 marketsthat form 35 per cent of its rev-enues.According to Kapoor, Voda-

fone Idea could also sell equitystake to a financially strong in-vestor. “There could be in-vestors interested in puttingmoney into Vodafone Ideagiven that the company has alot of value,” Kapoor said.Sonam Chandwani, Man-

aging Partner at KS Legal & As-sociates, said: “Payment tenureof 10 years would pose as agrave challenge for debt-rid-denVodafone Ideaas therepay-ment of such expenditurewould require higher tariffs, cost savings, andanequity cap-ital infusion. Also, most finan-cial institutions are likely to re-frain from lending largeamounts of money to VIL.”The impact of the apex court

order on other telecomoperat-ors will be less critical. BhartiAirtel will have to pay ₹2,600crore upfront and an annualpayment of ₹3,500 crore. Reli-ance Jio being anewplayer hasto pay just about ₹200 crore, which it has already deposited. The Supreme Court has askedNCLT to take a decision on thecompanies which under in-solvency. Thekeyquestionhereiswhether spectrumownedbythese companies can be soldthrough the insolvency pro-cess. This couldhave an impacton Reliance Jio depending onhow theNCLT views the issue.
