SENIOR CITIZENS OF DAVIS Exploring New Possibilities

CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION On Tuesday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. SCD

will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a wonderful Atria Covell Gardens-catered luncheon of freshcarna asada with flour

tortilla, mini chimichangas with guacamole, sour cream, salsa, Spanish rice, refried beans, tortilla chips and the usual SCD fresh veggies, chips and dip and birthday cake.

Betty Iams, board vice president and entertainment committee chair, has arranged a wonderful program starring James Barrera, an exciting performing cowboy. He skillfully intertwines charming folksy tales of the Old American West with riveting flying lariats, cracking whips and trick roping stunts with roots in Old Mexico. Get your tickets early, bring a friend, and enjoy this special Cinco de Mayo performance. Cost is $7 for members and $9 for non-members. Tickets are on sale now at the front desk. No tickets will be sold after noon on May 7, and they will not be available at the door. FLAG DAY EVENT, JUNE 15 The SCD membership business luncheon scheduled for June 8 has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 15 at 11:30 a.m. because of a Travelaires Trip on June 8. This will allow our members to enjoy both events. The Flag Day program will be completely new and will feature the jazz group “A Gal and Three Gents,” with singer Vickie Tama. This group was so entertaining when they first visited the Senior Center, we’re bringing them back for this encore presentation! The luncheon will be catered by the Elderly Nutrition Program. Watch the bulletin board for the menu. The usual appetizers, veggies, chips and dip, punch, coffee and birthday cake will be served. Cost is $7 for members and $9 for non-members. Tickets on sale now, get yours early.

TRANSPORTATION DAVIS COMMUNITY TRANSIT

We welcome Hoanhni Nguyen and Mario Melara to the DCT team! Hoanhni and Mario were Unitrans employees before they came to DCT.

For those of you who ride DCT on the weekends, you may have noticed that the dispatchers are now primarily in the office and are able to answer incoming phone calls. Our demand for weekend service has increased, and we now have two drivers scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, which allows the dispatcher to be in the office instead of driving. If you call before 5:00 p.m., and your call is not returned on that day, you will receive a phone call from the dispatcher the next morning and your request will be honored. Please feel free to call the DCT office at 757-4408 if you have any questions.

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH When Older Americans Month was

established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing, however. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy's meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as "Senior Citizens Month."

Thanks to President Jimmy Carter's 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called "Older Americans Month," and has become a tradition.

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other such activities.

Each year the Administration on Aging (AoA) issues a theme for Older Americans Month to assist our National Aging Services Network of state, tribal, area agencies on aging, and community services providers plan for activities that might take place in May or throughout the year. This year's theme "Age Strong! Live Long!" recognizes the diversity and vitality of today's older Americans who span three generations. UCD HOSTS LECTURES FOR OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

In observance of Older Americans Month, the UC Davis Retiree Center is sponsoring two noon speakers during the month of May. Whether you are concerned about your own health in the

years ahead, or you are caring for an aging loved one, these programs will provide important information. An Ounce of Prevention: Recommendations for Healthy Aging

Tuesday, May 18, noon – 1 p.m. Cancer Center Auditorium, UC Davis Health

System, Sacramento, CA

Health screenings and immunizations play an important role in preventing disease as you age. This talk by Dr. Huey Lin will include a discussion of current recommendations for older adults, with particular emphasis on the research done to support the current guidelines for cancer and osteoporosis screening. Dr. Lin is an assistant professor at the UC Davis Health System. His professional interests include teaching medical students and residents in geriatric care, delivery of health care in long-term care facilities, and fall and injury prevention in the elderly.

Harmless Aging Friday, May 21, noon – 1 p.m. Cabernet Room (Silo Building), UC Davis main

campus, Davis, CA

Aging is a normal process, but sickness is not. Everyone gets older, but you don’t have to get “old.” Dr. Herbert Bauer, a centenarian, shares his ideas for maintaining good health as you age. Dr. Bauer, 100 years young, is a former Yolo County Public Health Officer and psychiatrist. Dr. Bauer initiated the first Family Services Agency of Yolo County and joined in organizing the Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services in Yolo County. Dr. Bauer taught in the UC Davis Department of Community Health, King Law School, and in the UC Davis Health System.

These talks are open to the public and there is no charge to attend, although there is a charge to park at either campus. Additional details, including driving and parking directions, can be found on the UC Davis Retiree Center website, http://retireecenter.ucdavis.edu If you have questions, please contact the Center at [email protected] or call (530) 752-5182.

Our speaker, Lorenzo Cuesta, a long-time family historian, will guide us through the process of searching for our ancestors. He has many tips to share which will make the best use of our research time and garner excellent results. Please join us on Monday, May 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center for our monthly meeting and this informative presentation on FamilySearch.Org. Guests are most welcome and encouraged to attend! Remember, too, our library remains open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers are available during these hours to help with questions. Our library is very well stocked with genealogy-related books and computers for Internet research.
