Our programs
IRAP Includes financial support for innovation projects with SMEs and contributions to organizations assisting SMEs Business Innovation Access Program (BIAP) Helps Canadian SMEs access technical and business services at universities, colleges and other public research institutions. Youth Employment Program (YEP) Helps SMEs hire highly skilled post-secondary graduates Canadian HIV Technology Development Program (CHTD) Supports SMEs in the development of an HIV vaccine and other technologies related to the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of HIV. Canada Accelerator and Incubator Program (CAIP) Provides funding to best-in-class accelerators and incubators enabling them to support more early-stage SMEs that are investment ready and poised for growth.

Business Innovation Access Program
What is BIAP?
Pilot program that provides funding to SMEs to help them access technical or business
services at Canadian universities, colleges and publicly-funded research organizations to
bring better innovations to market faster.
What types of projects are eligible?
Projects with a short timeframe for which technical or business services would clearly
demonstrate the potential to contribute to quicker commercialization of products or academic research.
Eligible technical services: • product optimization • process development, analysis or
optimization • specialized testing
Eligible business services: • market research • marketing or business strategy
development • competitive analysis

1. Eligibility
If your company meets all of the following criteria:
• incorporated and profit-oriented entity, located in Canada with fewer
than 500 full-time employees
• have the desire and potential to improve innovation capacity
• open to developing a trusting relationship with NRC-IRAP
• have the objective to grow and generate profits in Canada through the
development and commercialization of innovative, technology-driven
new or improved products, services, or processes.

What is Concierge Service?
The place where Canadian enterprises can find information and guidance to access programs and resources in support of business innovation.
• Customized service to help SMEs leverage available innovation programs and services from federal, provincial and regional government
• Guidance on the most appropriate business innovation assistance, programs and resources specific to the clients’ needs
• Referrals and introductions to partners or other service providers helps the SME efficiently access innovation support programs and services

What We Do at NSERC

Interaction Grants
Allow post-secondary researchers to meet with
Canadian companies to explore potential
collaboration
• Establish a new relationship
• Up to $5,000
• Can cover academic travel and meeting costs
• Apply anytime; fast turn-around
Engage Grants
…a good way to establish a research partnership:
• New collaborations
• Solve a company-specific problem
• Six-month project; Up to $25,000 from NSERC
Engage Grants
• No company cash required
• IP owned by company
• Apply anytime; five-week turnaround
• 90% success rate
Engage Plus Grants
• Awarded to a researcher and company that
previously collaborated on an Engage Grant
project
• Build on the results of the original Engage project
• NSERC matches company cash up to a
maximum of $12,500
Engage Plus Grants (continued)
• Same application & review process as Engage
• Six-month project
• As with Engage, any new IP belongs to the
company
• Applications must be submitted within six
months of the end of the original Engage
project
Applied Research & Development Grants
Three Levels
1. Under $25,000 for up to 6 months.
Requires a New partnership
2. Up to $75,000 per year for up to three years:
Partners contribution 1/3 of project costs
3. Over $75,000 per year for up to three years:
Partners contribute ½ of project costs
Access University and College Talent
Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards
• NSERC award: $4,500 for a 16-week term
• College Bachelor programs in the sciences are also eligible
• Company contribution: minimum of $1,125
Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships
• NSERC award: $15,000 per year (2 yrs)
• Company contribution: minimum of $6,000
