BackgroundBangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), as the NationalStatistical Office (NSO), has completed a rigorousexercise on Data Gaps for SDGs monitoring
The Exercise was followed by an analytical report titled‘Setting Priorities for Data Support to 7th FYP and SDGs:An Overview’ published in April, 2016 based on thetargets comprising-
Activities to be taken by data providers
Financial involvement
Concept notes
Work plan, etc.
Based on the publication General Economic Division (GED)has conducted workshops and prepared a national datagap analysis
▪ To fill the the data gap gap both `data mining’ and `data generation’ isimportant
▪ Data from administrative sources are highly concerned to maintainwith the international standard and quality
▪ BBS has established an ‘SDG Cell’ for data mining and coordination ofofficial statistics related to SDGs
▪ Statistics Act, 2013 mandated BBS to generate official statistics andauthenticating of other official statistics by different governmentagencies
▪ Particularly for SDGs indicators, BBS is responsible for validation of dataproduced by other ministries/divisions/agencies. As such a NationalData Coordination Committee NDCC) bas ben set up in Statisics andInformatics Division.

Authentication of Survey/ Census conducted by other Agencies(Section 11, Statistics Act, 2013)

on such subjects which is not generated by BBS, any Ministry,
Division or their sub-ordinate office, department or agency,
can generate and publish statistics subject to getting No

Local Group Classification:
Group 1 : Indicators already produced by NSS and data exist for baseline report (preferably Year 1 = 2016)
Group 2 : Indicators in an ongoing process or could be produced within the NSDS up to 2023
Group 3 : Indicators needing more efforts ( methods, financing, etc. )
Way Forward
Financial and Technical Support from DPs are needed to generate new andupdated data.
Seeking to technical support from Custodian Agencies and DevelopmentPartners for methodological capacity development.
Strengthening Capacity Building of SDG Cell, BBS for expediting datamanagement for SDGs.
Supporting SDG Cell to update and publish the ‘Action Plan andMethodological Guidelines for Data Generation and Disaggregation forMonitoring and Evaluation of SDGs’.
Supporting Small Area Estimation for Data Disaggregation.
