Biographical Note: Martha Alberta Montgomery, known primarily as Alberta Montgomery, was a graduate of Decatur High School in Decatur, IL before earning a BS in art from the Teachers College at Columbia University. Miss Montgomery returned to teach art at Decatur High School 1915 until she answered the call to serve the country as a Reconstruction Aide for the United States Army in 1918. She used her knowledge of art as a rehabilitation tool for soldiers recovering from war injuries toward the end of World War I. Alberta Montgomery became a Reconstruction Aide in response to the Army’s efforts to return injured soldiers to productive civilian lives after service in World War I. The modern day Reconstruction Aide is known as an Occupational Therapist. Miss Montgomery held several supervisory positions during the course of her career. She was the head aide at the U.S. General Hospital in Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in 1919 before transferring to Walter Reed General Hospital where she was the Reconstruction Aide supervisor. When Walter Reed halted Occupational Therapy training and closed the Occupational Therapy department in 1933, Alberta Montgomery was appointed as the Director of Occupational Therapy at the State University of Iowa. Among her accomplishments, Miss Montgomery was instrumental in founding the Iowa Occupational Therapy Association and was also involved in the efforts by the American Occupational Therapy Association to standardize Occupational Therapy training programs nationwide.
