A Letter From The Chair Of The BoardIn 2009, the Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society moved boldly toward a world free of MS. Through quality services for the 6,300 people in our area living with MS, increased funding for research, and renewed advocacy efforts, the Chapter continued to be a leader in the movement.

Our 2009 signature events, Walk MS, Challenge Walk MS and Bike MS demonstrated everyone’s dedication despite a struggling economy. A record number of cyclists converged at a new location for Bike MS. Challenge Walk MS saw renewed energy and hope at its new location, and Walk MS continues to be a sea of orange as everyone comes out for one common goal — a world free of MS.

To keep moving in our positive direction in 2010, despite what difficult times may still lie ahead, we need your help more than ever. Please join the nearly 1,500 volunteers who have joined the movement who contribute to our success, and help end MS that much sooner.

Whether you are a walker, a cyclist, a doctor, a person living with MS, a business man or woman, or a loved one of someone living with MS, we can use your help.

We are a driving force of MS research, relent-lessly pursuing prevention, treatment, and a

cure. As part of our John L. Trotter Program we heard the positive news of nervous system repair research that holds so much promise for the future.

For those living with MS, a cure can’t come soon enough, so we need to continue to move together — faster. Whether you join the movement with us by volunteering, raising money, or by helping us raise awareness of multiple sclerosis, we can all make a difference.

With the expiration of my term as Chair, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to ap-point Lynda Baris to a two-year term as Chair. Lynda is a long-time volunteer and board mem-ber who has shown exceptional dedication and proven leadership. It’s my pleasure to welcome Lynda, and I have the utmost confidence that the Chapter is in excellent hands.

Please join our movement by calling 1-800-344-4867 today or going to www.gatewaymssociety.org Moving It For A Cure,

Every day we make our mark as activists to address policies and programs that could impact the lives of people with MS

We train and support an expanding network of thousands of MS activists to boldly ask for change at the federal, state and community levels

Missouri Congressman Russ Carnahan helped secure $5 million federally for MS research in the Congres-sionally Directed Medical Research Program

59 Legislative Ambassadors represented us at Missouri Legislative Action Day in 2009

48 volunteers and staff members made contact with every Illinois state legislator on Illinois Lobby Day

In 2009, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society representatives successfully:Continued “It’s Double Time!” promotion with the Illinois Lottery. All net proceeds from this $2 scratch-off ticket help to create a world free of MS by benefiting MS research in the state of Illinois.

Advocated to increase MO HealthNet/Medic-aid physician reimbursement rates. This issue is important due to the shortage of specialists and primary care physicians who will accept patients with MO HealthNet/Medicaid.

In 2009 the National Multiple Sclerosis Society representatives advocated for:Expansion of Missouri’s Home Access Tax Credit, so that more Missourians with disabili-ties can afford the modifications that allow them to safely remain in the home. We founded a coalition on this issue and recruited four not-for-profit partners to work with the MS Society.

Coverage for occupational and physical thera-pies for MO HealthNet/Medicaid patients.

Modifying the eligibility criteria for the Ticket to Work Health Assurance Program to help more disabled workers re-enter the workforce.

About MSMultiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symp-toms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.

If You or Someone You Know Has MS:Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health-care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. The National MS Society is committed to ensuring that people with MS have the information and quality care they need to live healthy, productive and independent lives. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the National Multiple Sclerosis Society today at www.nationalmssociety.org or 1-800-344-4867 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.
