1 National Miniature Pylon Racing Association Since 1965 AMA Affiliated December 2006 Presidential Notes Hello everyone, Well, this year is about done. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving; I trust you didn’t eat too much. Then there’s Christmas in just a few weeks – more food to consume and maybe a new toy or two. I hope you get what you’re wishing for. Then you ask what happened to the October newsletter? The August newsletter is the last one shown on the NMPRA website. Well, if you were a paying member as of the 1 st of October, you received a special mailing of the NMPRA membership list with contact information and a ballot for the election of the 2007 officers. For privacy reasons, we do not post members’ contact information on the website. If you didn’t receive your mailing and you believe you were a member, please contact David Doyle and give him a chance to check it out. If you’re not a current member, please consider joining to support the organization; we need you. The 2006 NMPRA Q-40 Championship Race was a success; we didn’t have as many entrants as I had hoped to see, but the racing was very competitive. Congratulations to Dub Jett for winning first place; fast time went to Mike Helsel. I did something a little different this time so that no one went home empty-handed; each entrant received a nice keepsake for the race; the response seemed positive so we will try it again next year. In the August newsletter, I mentioned that the World F3D competition will be held the week prior to our pylon event; I hope you can make it to both, even though it requires a big time commitment. I checked the AMA web site a few days ago and saw that it shows the current schedule for both events; the AMA pylon schedule will be a bit changed from the past due to the World event. The dates are as follows: F3D will be June 23 rd thru the 28 th and the AMA pylon NATS will June 29 th thru July 4 th . July 4 th is a Wednesday; that’s different as we normally finish on a Friday. I look forward to seeing you there. NEW MEMBERS I want to welcome and recognize the following new members. If you know any of these people, please be sure to thank them for joining the NMPRA and helping to support pylon racing. We are now over 200 members strong; that’s more members than we have had in many years. We need more members, both young and not so young. Scott Causey of Springfield, MO Jody Haack of Tacoma, WA John Lake, Jr. of Kingsland, GA Tony Matosich of Kissimmee, FL Alexandris, Russell of Chattaroy, WA Dan Uledahl of Kansas City, MO I also want to recognize Lee Von Der Hey who is returning after being out for about seven years. Lee was at the Championship race in Medford and flying very well. Thanks for joining us folks. RULES, RULES, RULES!! We have rules for a reason, and we all need to follow the rules; we all seek to find that little extra that will give us an advantage so that we can win, but to do so by not following the rules is, well, cheating. May I remind you that a few years ago we voted in the use of the APC prop in Q-40; we have been using the APC prop in Q-500 for several years. In the August newsletter I mentioned that modifying the APC props is against the rules. Now I’m hearing that there may be a source of “carbon fiber” props other than APC; I haven’t been able to verify this, but you should be aware of the possibility that they may exist. I must point out that the only AMA legal “carbon fiber” props are those produced by APC (Landing Products.) In other words, if it is a “carbon fiber” injected molded prop (non-wooden) and it wasn’t manufactured by Landing Products under the name of APC, it is NOT legal in any AMA Q-40 or Q-500 contest. But then, I shouldn’t have to tell you that, should I?

NATIONAL POINTS

Joanne Coffey has submitted theyear-end results for AMA 422 and theQ-40 Championship Series for 2006,and Barry Leavengood has submittedthe results for AMA 424 and 428;those results are listed elsewhere inthis newsletter. I apologize that wedidn’t have them sooner, but therewas a problem in receiving somedistrict points. Congratulations to all,and thanks for competing.

NMPRA CHAMPIONSHIP RACESERIES FOR 2007

We will try another year with theseries; the dates for the series racesthat are firm are shown below.Something to consider: while at theChampionship race in Medford, BruceCoffey suggested that we considerincluding 424 along with theChampionship Series races. I alsotalked with Barry Leavengood while Iwas preparing this article, and his firstthought was that we should include428, but then agreed that 424 wouldbe good. I know with the number ofentries we get at Phoenix, we couldn’tadd 424 to that race, but it could workwell at the other races. In fact, we didinclude 424 at the 2006 series race inFort Lauderdale, and it worked verywell. Do you have any comments?Would you support it?

Phoenix, AZFebruary 23rd thru 25th

Ft. Lauderdale, FLApril 20th thru 23rd

Bowie, MDJune 8th thru 10th

I’m still looking for at least one morerace host plus a host for the Q-40Championship Race; theChampionship Race should be on theEast coast in 2007.

NMPRA OFFICERS FOR 2007

The votes are in; David Doyle hascounted them and Gloria Doyle hasverified the count. I will remain asPresident for another year; I receiveda few more votes than my opponentso I won, or did I lose? Anyway, I havethe position for another year, and I willdo my best to steer us in the rightdirection. As always, I am open toyour suggestions; in fact, I need yourhelp; let me know your thoughts andwhat you would like to see us do.

We also have two changes in thedistrict V.P. positions:

Dan Nalley won the district 2 positionby one vote over Matt Russell.Welcome aboard, Dan. Thanks foryour support, Matt.

In district 5 Dan Kane has steppeddown, and Bernie Vanderleest hasvolunteered to replace him. Thanks,Bernie. Thanks for your support, Dan.

All the other positions remainunchanged.

Did you know? Do you care? Of theover 200 members we currently have, only 42 returned the ballot; that’sabout 19% of our members voting.Pretty sad, wouldn’t you say?

District 1, Travis Flynn

Aloha District One!! I am writing alohabecause right now I am finishing myreport from my patio in Maui. I amhere for Randy Bridge’s wedding -who is now officially married to Shana.Congratulations!

It has been a few months since ourlast real article with a lot of racinggoing on. I will start by giving a littlerecap of my F5D World’s trip. DanKane, Gary Freeman Jr., Drew Telford, and I spent 2 weeks in Romaniaseeing a different part of the world. Itwas for sure an adventure and one wewill not soon forget. It all started withnot one of Danny’s luggage showingup. We spent the next few daysdriving back and forth to the airport tocollect all of his equipment. Yeah, canyou imagine flying over 14 hours to acompetition and not one of yourplanes was there, let alone anyclothes. Luckily, before thecompetition started, he collected all ofthe necessary stuff. In F5D before theworld’s begins, they have a pre-world’s competition to get all of theworkers accustomed to how the raceshould be run. This was a really goodthing because I was in the first heat, and the starter says to me, “Can I seeyour remote control?” He then tellsme that he has never seen a radiocontrol plane, let alone a race, and heis our starter. Needless to say, the firstday and a half was re-flown andactually restarted. So we really got ina lot of test flying which was a goodthing. At the end of the pre-worlds,Dan did the best, coming in secondplace only one second out of first.

Now to the actual world’s. Thiscompetition was run much moresmoothly now, and we got in 16 fullrounds over four days. All of us didreally well, but we could tell prettyearly on that the Germans had donetheir homework again and that wewould be fighting for second place. Bythe end of the fourth day, it wasofficial: Dan Kane came in 6th;I camein 7th,and Gary came in 9th,and as ateam we finished in the silver and gota very nice medal to take home. Allthree of us need to thank Drew for

being an awesome caller and walkingback and forth to the line over 75 timesfor us. I almost forgot to mention theGerman who won, Christian Roesler, had come in first by 30 seconds oversecond place, and in his last roundsturned a 56-second time.Unfortunately, he had one cut but witha 10 percent penalty he still turned a61-second time which is the record byover 5 seconds. His work for surepaid off.

This Worlds was definitely one of themost fun races I have been to. Wespent many of the nights drinking andtelling race stories with the Germans,Belgiums, Fins, and, of course, theCanadians. I want to thank all of youdistrict guys who helped support thisteam so that we could represent theUSA in Romania.

Now back home we had some moreracing. While I was gone, there was arace in Medford, Oregon, that I knowmany of our district guys went to. It isgreat to hear that you guys aretraveling and supporting races otherthan just the local ones. I don’t havethe results, but from what I understandthe new team of Matias Salar andScott McAfee did their part torepresent our district. These guyshave been practicing and reallyworking at it, so good job on yourfinishes.

The next race was the last race for theNMPRA season at the SepulvedaBasin on September 30th and October1st. This was a great race actually puton by the Whittier Narrows club sincetheir field was not available at thetime. We had about 50 entries for thethree classes, and we got in 5 roundson Saturday. With the shorter daysand that many entries we were forsure hustling to fly that many rounds. Thanks to all of the workers we got itdone. Here are the results from thetwo different days.

My next contest was in Parker,Arizona, where I got an opportunity tofly in a Giant Scale Race. For those ofyou who have not seen it, they arereally very cool. These planes arehuge with wing spans over 10 feet! The plane I got to fly was a Cassutt F1built from scratch by Craig Greening. The plane flew absolutely fantastic.Another district one guy Tim Lime gotthe same opportunity to fly anotherscratch-built Cassutt. Also DougKillebrew was out there flying anunlimited Rare Bear with a 290ccengine. That thing was awesome.Their kind of racing is different fromours where you only race 6 laps in

District Newsfront of yourself. We all compete in 5rounds to qualify for the gold or silverfinal race. Tim and I made it into thesilver and got to duke it out for thesilver title. Our race was great, but wewere both a little too aggressive, andwith cuts it put Tim in second and mein fifth. Either way, it was a funexperience that I hope I can do again. The most important thing is by Tim,Doug, and I being out there, I think wehave convinced a few guys to comeand try some Q40 or Q500. In fact, the next weekend in Phoenix, MartinTreat, the USRA president, came outto that race and is now very interestedin flying with us.

Now to the next race which is the lastcontest for the West Coast Series andalso the last race for the year in ourdistrict. We again had over 50 entriesin the three classes finishing 5 roundson Saturday and 4 on Sunday leavingtime for the prize giving. The racingwas great as always, but I think thebest race was the fly-off in Q40 onSaturday between Matias Salar, ClarkLeadbetter, and Gino DelPonte. These guys had a great race for all 10laps with Matias coming out on top. Here are the results from the twodays.

This being the end of the West CoastSeries there were some great prizesgiven away to all of the top finishers, and I am sorry but I don’t have theresults for all the winners, but I doknow that Gino Delponte was thechamp in both 428 and 422. Greatjob, Gino!

Well, that’s about it for now and thanksfor electing me to be your district VPagain for the 3rd year. Oh yeah, I wasthe only one running. LOL!!

Keep practicing!!Travis Flynn

Well Folks,

The people have spoken. We have aCongress and Senate controlled byanother party, and so do we have anew but familiar influence in District 2.Congratulations to Dan Nalley onhaving won his bid for District 2 V. P.I’m sure Dan will serve you well.

Most of what has happened in District2 this year has been coveredelsewhere. The unfortunate thing hasbeen the cancellation of 3 differentrace weekends due to lack of supportfor the schedule. I would really like tosee a formal program for schedulingraces on both a national and local

level. We already have conflictingrace dates in District 2 and District 3 in2007. This won’t help attendance ateither venue. I have asked forplanned race dates from varioussources and received little response. For those of you that have responded- Thank You!

If you have read my earlier posts, youare aware that the NWPRA inSpokane developed a wireless racecourse system. I have been workingwith Jim Allen in an effort to produce asystem for the AMA to use at theWorld Championships and the Nats. Our goal has been to refine thesystem, reduce the parts count, andhave something that could beprovided to other clubs. We have hadfair success with the Spektrum radios, but have always envisioned a systemwhich utilizes wireless modems and aminimum of electronics. We areworking toward that goal and haveidentified components with a provenhistory in the field and are hoping tohave a working system to run at one ofthe races in Phoenix this winter. If youare interested in our work, let me knowand I will send you a documentregarding our progress.

Although I won’t be writing forNMPRA, I still have lots of things to doas I have partnered with BrucedeChastle to bring the GR-7 to marketin the U.S. Check it out atwww.russellracin.com. My daughterand I are looking forward to racing afull schedule this year. Hopefully we’llsee you at a race somewhere.

I hope you all have a safe and happyholiday season.

Wish us luck!

Racing season is definitely over. As Iwrite this, the thermometer outsidereads -22 degrees C. Not much elseto do but reminisce over the goodtimes we had during the past racingseason.

This season the top honors for highestdistrict points in the Quickie eventwent to Russ Bouchard of Regina.Second place was Cecil Graval ofCalgary, and third went to DougHouston of Calgary. The fastest timein Quickie this season was set byRuss Bouchard with a ten-lap time of1:05.15 set at the districtchampionships in Saskatoon. Keep inmind that we race on the two-mileshort course and run the Webra Qpylon motor and the Nelson Quickiemotor with non-tuned expansionchamber muffler.

Top honors in the Quarter 40 eventwent to Doug Houston of Calgary.Second place was Murray Hamula ofCrossfield, AB, and third went toRichard Moldenhauer of Saskatoon. The fastest time in the district thisseason was set by Randy Smith with aten-lap time of 1:04.11 set at thedistrict championships in Saskatoon.

The overall Grand Champion for totalcombined Quickie and Q40 points wasCecil Graval. However, I didn’t realizeit until adding up points for this article, but Doug Houston was only 0.9 pointsbelow Cecil out of a total of 545 totalpoints!!! That’s incredibly close. Goodracing, boys.

In August, our Canadian electric pylonracing team traveled to Romaniaminus toothpaste, mouth wash, and lipbalm in their luggage but managed avery respectable team placing of 4thplace out of eight international teams. This is a huge improvement over 2004when the Canadian team finisheddead last. Great job, guys, a realimprovement for sure. I’m sure 2008

could see Canada on the medalpodium. Congratulations to RoyAndrassy and Peter Thannhauser ofCalgary, Terence Palaschuk ofRegina, and Delbert Godon, teammanager, from Airdrie, AB. The bestCanadian individual performancecame from Roy Andrassy flying aclean set of 16 rounds without anyheat disqualifications or equipmentfailures. Roy placed 11th out of 22pilots.

More with respect to internationalcompetition, the Canadian F3D teamselection trials were held at theRegina Windy Flyers club field on theweekend of Sept. 9-10, 2006 for thepurpose of choosing a team for theworld championships scheduled forJune 30-July 4, 2007 to be held inMuncie. Earlier in the year, HaroldSattler and Jeremy Voth gave noticeof their intention to attend the tryout.Murray Hamula announced hisintention in July.

[Editor’s note: According to the AMAwebsite and F3D website, the worldF3D is scheduled for June 23 – June28.

The trials were held on a cold, windyfall day but enough official flights werecompleted to meet the requirementsfor selecting a team. The fastestqualifying time was posted by Haroldwith a time of 64 seconds. Jeremyplaced second and Murray qualified inthird place.

There were some problems withstarting the engines in the coolertemps and keeping them running untiloperating temperatures were reached.Mechanical problems wereencountered that are certainlydifferent from those we normally seein Quickie or Q-40. The team willneed to overcome these with morepractice and de-bugging time.

The Toledo Weak Signals club held atwo-day 424 race on July 29 and 30.This is an excellent site for pylonracing, and 14 pilots competed onboth Saturday and Sunday. Theweather was extremely hot for thispart of the country with temperaturesin the 90s and high humidity bothdays. All of the pilots and workerswere very grateful for the freeGatorade and soft drinks. The Calumet Flyers Club held a 424race in Hilbert, WI, on August 26.Mick Warning provided the followingreport:

WIPRO - Hilbert, WI - August 26

A total of 9 pilots were ready to go forthis event, but it got off to a slow startdue to foggy and misty conditions. Afew “brave” pilots managed some trimflights by keeping their planes withineyeshot, and eventually it wasdetermined that this was as good asit’s going to get….let’s go racing! Thiswas a day of few mishaps, which wasin sharp contrast to last year when wediggered about 8 planes.

Mark Warning had flight problemsright out of the box, and after zeroing3 rounds, he finally discovered that thehinge line tape on the tail was comingloose and messing up the tail aero.No problems after the tape wasremoved! At the lunch break it lookedas if the race would be determinedamong 4 guys. Darwin Larsoneliminated himself from the runningafter a takeoff midair with MalcolmReynolds. Jim Nikodem lost to BernieVanderleest before lunch, but thenredeemed himself twice in theafternoon. Jim also edged MickWarning in their only match, whichended up handing the overall victoryto Jim. Last but not least, the PGRC held theNMPRA District 6 Championship Raceon October 14. Unfortunately, thecalm morning air turned into anabsolutely howling gale by latemorning, and the 428 racing had to becancelled due to lack of willingcontestants.

At any rate, here are the results for the424 racing:

District NewsFor now, the racing season in theNortheast is over for 2006. I wasunable to make it to the SouthCarolina race, and I’m curious tolearn how it went. Maybe next time,Marcus.

For 2007, my goal is to build ormodify an existing 428 Quickie tocarry one of the lightweight videocameras and race with it in actualheats. If anyone beats me to it,please send me a link or the file toview the footage.

As a follow-up to my last update onthe status of the PGRC Field, theMaryland National Capital Park andPlanning Commission finally tookownership of our site, and we are inthe process finalizing our new leasewith them. We anticipate things to goon seamlessly from now on and farinto the future.

That’s it for this installment. Untilthen, guys, be good to your wivesand kids because Christmas iscoming and they know what you like.

One thing that makes it easier to holdraces at new fields that want to trytheir hand at racing is the fact that wehave a portable race system whichcan be transported to new sites, andtherefore the club does not have toexpend a large amount of money toget started in racing. This system wasbuilt by the MPPA group in Ft.Lauderdale. We are constantlychanging/upgrading the equipment tomake it better and more reliable. Ifyou or your club wants moreinformation on this equipment anduse, contact Jim Perdue [email protected].

The Jedburg Flyers in Summerville,SC, held our second race. This racemarks the first time in over 8 years thatwe have held a district race outsidethe state of Florida! I would like tohave more races outside of Floridaand hope to have another racescheduled in Summerville. Hopefullythey will not lose their field before thenas rumors have suggested. This wasa 2-day one-race event, and we had
