    About this program:

Surface and interfacial chemistry examine the chemical processes that occur at the phase boundary

between solid/ solid liquid/ solid, liquid/ liquid and gas/ solid interfaces. Surface chemistry branch

conduct experiments to study the surface of a solid/ liquid and their interfaces before, during and

after reaction. The understanding is used to develop new or improved surfaces, coatings and

materials for different application. Research program includes modifying surface to reduce corrosion,

understanding dynamics on surfaces as they pertain to film deposition, nanomaterial synthesis, adsorption and catalysis.

    Objectives

Develop different oxide material with high surface area through different technique like

hydrothermal, sol-gel and reverse microemulsion etc

New technique development for the synthesis of oxide nanomaterials with uniform size and

variable surface properties. Material modification to improve the surface properties so that the

material can be used as coating, adsorbent and catalyst.

Development of hydrophilic, hydrophobic, self cleaning and corrosion resistant oxide coating on

    metal/glass surfaces through sol-gel technique.

Facility for BET surface area, pore size, average pore diameter and pore volume analysis.

Detail surface functional group and chemical environment of the element in a material can be

characterized using available facilities like FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS at NML.

    Major Developments

High surface area oxide materials like TiO2, Al2O3 and mixed oxides

Nitrogen doped titania-zirconia binary oxide with high surface area and enhanced photocatalytic

    activity

Differ ent thermally stable transition metal oxide pillared clays for use as adsorbent and

    catalysts

Stable, nontoxic nanosilver and gold dispersion in aqueous solution

Development of corrosion resistant oxide coating on SS and mild steel material

    Major Facilities

    (i) BET Surface area and pore size analyzer, (ii) FTIR spectroscopy, (iii) UV-visible

Spectroscopy with defused reflectance facility, (iv) Ultrasonic processor for synthesis, (v)

Nanoparticle size analyzer, (vi) Contact angle meter and (vii) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
