The Department of Mathematics, MVJ College of Engineering, celebrated National
Mathematics Day, on the occasion of the 131st birth anniversary of Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan, at
Dr. M V Jayaraman Auditorium, on 22nd December, 2018.
Dr. R Vittal Rao, Professor - IISc, Bangalore was the Chief Guest of the event. He was a
member of the committee which gave a proposal to the then Prime Minister Dr. Mamohan
Singh that Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan’s Birth Anniversary has to be celebrated as National
Mathematics Day.

The program started at 10.30 am with the lightening of the lamp by the honourable Chief
Guest. This was followed by an invocation song. Dr. Nagaraj Sitaram, Principal - MVJCE
welcomed the Chief Guest with a bouquet. Prof. Sampoorna V (Head – Department of
Mathematics) introduced the Chief Guest to the audience. 900 students of First year B.E, from all
the streams participated in the program.
The Chief Guest enlightened the students on the contributions of Sri Srinivasa
Ramanujan in the field of Mathematics. He explained the general formula of partitions which
was given by Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan and also shared his experience with the family
members of Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan.
The event culminated with a Question and Answer session. Dr. Nagaraj Sitaram,
Principal, honored the Chief Guest with a memento. Ms. Gayathri, I B.E - ECE, delivered the
Vote of Thanks. The program came to an end at 11.50 am.
The programme was a good platform for the students to learn about the achievements of Sri
Srinivasa Ramanujan.
We express our gratitude to the Management, Principal and Vice-Principal for enabling us
to celebrate National Mathematics Day, and the faculty members for accompanying us to the
venue and being supportive.
Outcome of the Event:
1. Dr. R Vittal Rao motivated the students through his speech.
2. All First year B.E students and faculty members were enlightened about
contributions of Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan.
3. All First year B.E students and faculty members learnt about the Last (Lost)
Note book of Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan.
