COACH’S COLUMN

another solid start this year with only two losses to date. They play tough team basketball and are very well coached by Paul Middleton in the important fundamentals of the game.

We have three big games now before the Christmas break with Leicester and Hemel to come and we want to come back in January with plenty to play for in the season’s second half. Enjoy the game.

Coach Mellor

Good evening and welcome to tonight’s clash against our visitors from over the Pennines, Manchester Magic.

Last weekend was a tale of two games with two very contrasting performances. On Saturday we played excellently at both ends of the court to beat Loughborough but on Sunday in a game which neither team I felt played particularly well we lost narrowly by 4 with a culmination of foul trouble, poor shooting and rebounding contributing to the result.

Tonights visitors were the team of last season taking all fourtrophies on offer in a remarkable campaign and have had

JUNIORS ROUNDUP

The Dragon’s under 16 squad matched up against Saint Aidan’s from Harrogate. The Dragons took an impressive record into the game (9-1). The Dragons started the game well leading by 23 after the 3rd quarter. The Harrogate team came out fighting in the 4th quarter outscoring Dragons 26-15; however, this was not enough to gain a victory and Bradford sealed the victory 85- 73.

Last weekend saw all 3 junior teams in action in their respective leagues with both the under 14s and under 16s playing at home, while the under 18s travelled to take on 4th in the table Mansfield Giants. Bradford Dragons’ under 14’s squad took on bottom of the table Sefton Stars, who are yet to win in the league on Saturday. The home team began the game in a strong position leading at the end of the first quarter: 25-5. They continued to build on this lead and at the final whistle the score board showed 87-29, giving the youngest Dragons another impressive win.

The Dragons U18s played the Mansfield Giants on Saturday.

The Giants started well and Bradford trailed by 19 at half time. They came back in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Giants by 19 points, managing to tie the game going into the final quarter. Despite this impressive come back from a 19-point deficit, the Dragons lost hold of the game in the final moments with the game ending 85-80.

In the third quarter, there were two moments of brilliance. Loughborough’s Alex Roberts picking out a defence splitting pass for Reiss Pinnock to score with an alley-oop. Then, with only 90 seconds remaining, Bradford’s Rihards Sulcs grappled the ball from Max Richardson, laying the ball off to Marcus Gooding who returned it to Sulcs, who had advanced the full length of the court, to take a reverse layup and another two points. As the buzzer sounded, the hosts lead had doubled to 14 points (73-59).

The Dragons were now in full control. The visitor’s frustration showed when Sulcs stole the ball in his own half and was tripped as he set off down the court; Richardson, being called for an unsportsmanlike foul. Sulcs stepped up to take both free throws. With possession handed back to the Dragons, Rafi Saipe followed up with another reverse lay-up. The Dragons closed the game with a convincing 95-76 victory. Ricky Fetske put in a sterling shooting display, sinking 81% from the floor, to finish the game on 35 points (8 rebounds, 4 assists). Marcus Gooding, added 18 points (2 rebounds, 6 assists). Rihards Sulcs clocked up a triple double, 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

On Sunday, the Dragons made the trip to face Essex Leopards. The Dragons failed to get going in the first quarter, which finished with Essex 7 points ahead (20-13). Bradford improved in the second period of play, but, at half-time they, went back to the locker room still 5 points behind, at 38-33.

After the break, the Leopards opened the gap up to ten points before the Dragons went on a scoring run to pull back to a single basket (54-52). At the end of the third the margin was back to 5, with the hosts leading by 63 to 58. With three minutes played of the final quarter, a Marcus Gooding three pointer levelled the scores (67-67. Essex then pulled away once more to win the game 83-79. Gooding played the full 40 minutes and finished as the game’s high scorer, with 27 points. He was supported by Sulcs, who contributed 14 points.

The Dragons experienced mixed results in a double header weekend, which saw them take an emphatic victory, against third placed Loughborough Student Riders (95-76), at home on Saturday, but then lose at Essex Leopards (83-79) the following day.

For Saturday’s opponents, Loughborough, this is their first season in the top flight of the NBL. Despite their inexperience at this level, they started the game from third place in the table, two places ahead of their hosts. The Dragons opened the scoring quickly opening up a five-point lead (9-4), before the Riders levelled the scores (9-9) then taking a nine-point lead of their own (13-22). That was as good as it got for the visitors, and at the end of the first, the Dragons held a five-point advantage (29-24). Bradford held the lead going into half time (50-43).

NEXT HOME GAME:DRAGONS v DERBY TRAILBLAZERS

SATURDAY 14th JANUARY 2017 6:15pm

Well, since leaving Bradford, Basketball has taken me all over the place. I have played for a number of teams and picked up one piece of silverware on my travels. I have played for Westminster Warriors, two seasons at Essex Leopards (where we won the National Trophy), Brixton Topcats and this season I am playing for London Greenhouse Pioneers. One of the great things that I’ve learnt from being on these teams is how to adjust myself to different playing styles and coaching personalities. Your job that took you away from Yorkshire to London. How did that work out for you?

Great! I worked for that same company for five years. However, I have recently landed a new role at a start-up company. This involves helping increase business growth through new business sales. It’s a really exciting time as there is so much scope for expansion and self-development.

And what’s happening on the personal front?

I’m currently just about to move into a new house in east London, which is great as it has access to central London but allows an escape from the noise of the capital.

So, what would you like to say to the Bradford fans?

I still keep in touch with most of the Dragons’ players and Coach Mellor as they are all great guys. During my time at the Dragons, I learnt that it’s not the talent that comes through the door, it’s the work ethic and attitude of that talent that drives success. Most of the fans won’t see what the guys go through, but I’d 100% say that the Dragons are the hardest working team that I’ve ever played for. I hope to be able to attend a home game in the near future.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?This week we continue our look back at some of our former Dragons’ players, with a local boy who, like many since, came to Bradford from neighbouring Leeds Force (then Leeds Carnegie), instantly becoming a popular member of the team.
