Kappas Paint the World with Beauty! by Laurie Konrad, National President, Iota State/NE

I wished you Happy Harvest in the Holiday Profile, and now I wish you safety and warmth during the Winter and Spring storms. I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and was able to spend it with family and friends. I had a wonderful visit with the Phi State Ohio Kappas in November. They had a Membership Luncheon and Style Show plus a raffle for baskets of goodies. The proceeds went toward funding State Scholarships and National Special Projects. I was able to meet several potential members and sent cards to all those who attended. I am sure Ohio will have new members this year! I appreciate the hospitality of those who opened their homes and worked to make my visit memorable. I look forward to my visit to Louisiana at the end of February and will enjoy the Southern hospitality! I have plans to visit Alabama in April, share in my own state’s State Convention, and fly to California in May. I am excited to contact potential members in those contact states. After all the traveling, I will make my plans for the Charleston Convention. I am very excited and looking forward to seeing all of my Kappa family.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29 - “Magnolia Gardens Tour” Carved from a Cypress Swamp by the Reverend John Drayton in the early 19th Century, Magnolia Gardens is considered one of the most beautiful romantic gardens in the world. As you stroll with your private guide through the lush garden pathways, these unique landscapes will captivate you. After touring the gardens, board the Nature Train which will take you into part of the Audubon Swamp Garden, home to scores of water loving creatures, and past the newly restored slave cabins which interpret African American life on the plantation. While traveling through the old rice fields, you may even run into the nostalgic American alligator and have the opportunity to view the abundant bird population of the Lowcountry.

THURSDAY, JUNE 30 (Option 1) - “Historic Charleston Bus Tour” Tour Charleston - one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the south. Your tour will begin at our hotel where you will board our motor coach for a privately guided drive through the city’s historic district. Throughout the tour, your licensed guide will recount over 300 years of Charleston’s long and colorful history from 1670 to present day with a blend of knowledge, wit, and humor. Topics discussed will include Charleston’s role in Colonial America, the American Revolution, the southern Antebellum Era, the Civil War, and its current day status as one of the top travel destinations in the world.

THURSDAY, JUNE 30 (Option 2) - “Historic Charleston Carriage Tour” Enjoy the sights of Charleston the way our ancestors did, aboard a horse-drawn carriage. This leisurely ride through narrow streets and alleyways carries you past carefully restored 18th and 19th Century homes and buildings. Your knowledgeable guide relates three hundred years of history to the accompaniment of a horse's hooves clopping along the pavement. The scent of tea olive from nearby gardens lingers in the air as you snap that special photograph capturing a bit of Charleston's history.

FRIDAY, JULY 1-2 POST TOUR - “Paint Charleston Purple” (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 1 dinner included) SOMETHING NEW! With so much history, beautiful sights, and our location in Charleston, it was decided to use the convention hotel as base for the Post Tour to explore some more of the things that make Charleston unique, without traveling long distances and having to check-in/check-out and pack/unpack on tour-time! You’ll enjoy two full days and nights following convention, before traveling home Sunday.

Friday: We start with a tour of Middleton Place Plantation, a Registered National Historic Landmark and the plantation home of the Middleton family since 1741. We will enjoy a delicious luncheon in the Middleton Place Pavilion. Included in the tour will be views of rich farmland and forests and a drive by St. John's Episcopal Church and the Angel Oak, a 1400 year old live oak tree. Another highlight of the tour will be a stop at the Charleston Tea Plantation, the only tea plantation in the United States. An informative narrated trolley tour of the grounds and a tour of the Tea Factory are included.

Saturday: We are off to the Boone Hall Plantation. Grab your camera, and journey across the Cooper River to visit Boone Hall Plantation, a popular location for Hollywood filming. At the Cooking School of Southern Season, we will learn from regionally notable and internationally renowned celebrity chefs as they share secrets, techniques, recipes, and tastings in a cooking classroom that redefines the concept. Following an afternoon break to freshen up a bit, we will head to Magnolia’s Restaurant, located along historic East Bay Street adjacent to the Charleston seaside, for an included dinner. Magnolia's offers an extraordinary dining experience. Selections will be made tableside from a limited menu. The exquisite southern cuisine will leave you with a night to remember.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

“Kappas

Paint the World with Beauty”

Special Projects want to help our National President Laurie Konrad paint the 2016 Charleston, North Carolina Convention with beauty! Let’s all help generate funds for the National Headquarters by purchasing tickets for jewelry and technology in your state and at the convention. State Presidents will have raffle tickets. Our goal is for every Kappa member to buy 6 tickets for $5.00. Winners need not be present to win. Chapter Presidents can take the tickets to the Convention or mail them to the Special Projects Chair. Each state is asked to provide two items: small electronics and/or jewelry. Each item donated should have a value of $75 for a total of $150 per state. States may send money, and the committee will purchase items for them. If you need more information, contact:

Special Projects Chair Jo Ann Collett

BOOKS and BEARS

Our annual Philanthropic Project at Convention is once again “Books and Bears” so pack them up for their journey to Charleston. Your donations will be presented to the Roscoe Reader Program during the Annual Luncheon. This

program’s mission is to “motivate students in the early grades to become skilled readers in order to become better learners throughout their school years,” according to founder Marietta Hicks. The support for our annual philanthropic outreach each year is overwhelming. Thank you for your continued care and generosity for those in need!

Bits and Pieces

Eta State/LA, Past State President Omega Dobard (center) and husband Leo (right), along with other members of the Apple Pie Brigade, welcomed home over 100 soldiers from Kuwait on January 7, 2016, at the Soldier Process Center at England Air Park in Alexandria/LA.

The Apple Pie Brigade was started by Sara Simmonds to help bring smiles to waiting soldiers. This volunteer group has been welcoming and deploying soldiers to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Cuba, and other foreign countries since 2004. They serve soda and apple pie at all hours of the day and night as soldiers arrive and leave the country. There have been times when Omega and Leo have met with two to three groups in the same day. They have spent their birthdays and even New Year’s Day with the troops.

The Apple Pie Brigade is the last group to see the soldiers before their deployment – and they’re the first to see them when they get home. It’s a big deal to the volunteers and the soldiers. They also attend memorial services for our heroes who have died in action.

Brigadier General James Yarbrough, former Fort Polk Commander, who gave the group their name, has recognized them for their outstanding patriotism and loyalty to our fighting men and women.

Alpha Kappa member Donna Salter Theta State/AL received $1,800 from the Alabama Grant, Advanced Placement Plus by reaching her AP goal with eight students passing the AP English Exam. The students will receive college credit and $100.

Attitudes are contagious. Make sure yours is

worth catching!

These are Kappa’s Light”

December 5, 1933 - January 27, 2016

Dorothy L. “Dotti” Shippey, Past National President of Kappa Kappa Iota, joined the Omega Chapter on January 27, 2016. She was born on December 5, 1933, the daughter of Merle and Ethel Shippey. She is survived by cousins and many friends.

Dotti was a devoted member of Kappa Kappa Iota on the local, state, and national levels. She served as President of Zeta State/MO from 1972 to 1974. Dotti served as National President in 1979-80. Her theme was “Kindness – Knowledge – Imagination – These are

Kappa’s Light”. During her year Dotti used her Imagination in sharing the Knowledge she had gained in her years of service to Kappa, and she hoped in some small way to show Kindness in her every day living to help keep Kappa’s light bright. After her year as National President, Dotti continued to serve Kappa Kappa Iota wherever she could. She served as National Parliamentarian several times, and in 2004 she served as National Convention Chair in St. Louis.

Dotti was a long time physical education teacher at the Webster Grove High School. She had a beautiful singing voice and shared her talent with many. After her retirement, Dotti enjoyed operating a doggy daycare, bowling, and playing bridge.

Dotti will be fondly remembered for her devotion to Kappa and her willingness to share knowledge of Kappa with others.
