An organization is only as strong as it members, and the National Hereford Women (NHW) would like to say thank you for contributing to another successful year of support youth efforts and promoting the Hereford breed. Below is information about the NHW.

The National Hereford Women awarded more than $15,000 to Hereford youth through scholarships, contest and National Queen program. This was only possible through contribution by Hereford breeders and enthusiast.

In 1975, the National Hereford Queen program was established; the

New Year will mark the programs 39th anniversary. The program gives young Hereford women breeders an opportunity for leadership, poise, friendship and an opportunity to promote the Hereford breed. The National Queen Committee has created a new sponsorship program that supports the National Queen and the various activities that she and the state queens are involved in each year. Your involvement in this great program will touch the lives of numerous girls and young ladies involved in the Hereford breed. Information about this sponsorship can be found on page 2.

Did you know, the NHW has

commissioned four pieces of artwork over the past four years? The forth piece of artwork will be unveiled and auctioned off at the Cowtown Select Sale in Fort Worth, Texas on February 2, 2014. Additional information can be found on page 4.

The NHW website, Facebook page, newsletter along with the Hereford World and at various Hereford events are ways that the NHW organization communicates with you. Additionally, the board members and myself are available to talk with you to understand the needs of your state organizations and answer questions that you might have on how you can get more involved in the NHW.

Banners and ribbons, trophies and bronzes, pristine white and a beauti-ful crown – all directly associated with the role of National Hereford Queen. But that role also carries many more challenges and responsibilities. From the travel and interaction with other Hereford enthusiasts to the smiles on young exhibitors’ faces – all responsibilities and opportunities syn-onymous with the role of National Hereford Queen- have resulted in memories I will cherish forever. Excited and overwhelmed are understatements to how I felt this time last year. To receive the honor to represent the breed that helped make me who I am today, is something that I will always hold very dear and true to my heart. Many said the year would be gone before I knew it, little did I know it was gone in a blink of an eye. Sharing the excite-ment of the winners, becoming a role model for young ladies and witnessing the pride on parents’ faces were all priceless moments that surpassed all my expectations. My reign as Queen allowed me to travel more than 20,000 miles last year. I was honored to have presided over all six major Hereford shows – Louisville (NAILE), Reno, Denver, Fort Worth, Harrisburg and Kansas City as well as the National Junior Her-eford Show in Kansas City this past summer. I witnessed, first-hand, record setting events as well as record selling animals in our beloved breed. Attending the shows was an incredible experience but even more enjoyable was attending individual breed-ers’ production sales. I was truly honored to be invited to attend sales across the United States. I have given countless interviews, visited with hundreds of people and cherish every minute I had in the pristine white and crown. I learned how much “behind the scenes” work goes into producing these incredible events. The American Hereford Association has a staff that is second to none, fun to work with and they were always willing to lend a helping hand. The members of the National Hereford Women, the sponsor for the National Hereford Queen, were always willing to help out in any way they could. The directors that make up the National Junior Hereford Board were absolutely awe-some to work with – always there, always willing to assist and very supportive. It is an honor as well as a very humbling experience to be surrounded by so many who believe so strongly in our breed at every membership level.

Cherished Memories

Whitney Andras2012-2013 National Hereford Queen

The number of individuals and breeders who helped me – both in and out of the arena- is too long to even try to list – “it took a village.” But I send out a huge, heartfelt “Thank You” to each and every one of you. Every Hereford activity I attended was an amazing experience. I especially want to thank the Okla-homa Hereford breeders for choosing me as their Oklahoma Hereford Queen and for their continued support as the National Hereford Queen. The role of National Hereford Queen is more than handing out awards and standing at the backdrop with the winners. It’s a privilege and an honor to promote our breed and our indus-try. The Hereford breed carries strong traditions and is backed by many multi-generation families, including my own. I was excited to crown the new 2014 National Hereford Queen in Kansas City this past month. I know the crown and title are in very capable hands with Brooke Jensen, Courtland, KS, now representing our breed. Hereford blood also runs deep in her veins for three generations – dating back to Kin-naber Cattle Co. in Canada. I wish her the very best and hope she enjoys the incredible experience as much as I.

To share a quote – “Where there is no struggle, there is no strength, and nothing in this world, worth having, comes easy.” Spending the year as the ambassador of the breed I love was not without its challenges but it’s even more challenging to say farewell to an honor I proudly held. My future will always include involvement with the Hereford breed. It’s a wonderful organization, featuring wonderful people that I am proud to call my Hereford family. Thank you for the opportunity to serve You!

Brooke Jensen Named 2013-2014 National Hereford Queen

Brooke Jensen, Courtland, Kan., was crowned the 2013-14 National Hereford Queen during the 2013 American Royal National Hereford Show in Kansas City Nov. 3. Born into the Hereford breed, Brooke has her work cut out for her as she begins her year long journey as an agriculture advocate, the face of the Hereford breed and a role model for countless young Hereford women. First runner-up honors went to Amy Green, Munfordville, Ky.; Katie Burns, Coulterville, Ill., was named second runner-up and Miss Congeniality. Brooke began showing cattle at a young age and exhibited her first animal at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Indianapolis, Ind., in 2003, when she was 7 years old. Since then, Brooke has accomplished numerous achievements both in the ring and through other National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA)

activities such as the Hereford Bowl and contests including extemporaneous speaking, team fitting, team marketing and photography. With her poise and determina-tion, she is a fierce competitor in the national showmanship contest each year. Through the years, she has been named champion peewee, reserve junior and reserve intermediate showman. In the Kansas Junior Hereford Association (KJHA) she has served as a director for two years and as the 2013 Kansas Hereford Queen. “Herefords are a huge part of my life,” Brooke says. “It’s an incredible experience being actively involved in an industry with the most amazing, hardworking people in the world.” As queen, Brooke has a busy year ahead of her as she travels the nation representing her breed. “Becoming queen is my way to contribute back to the breed for all the amazing opportunities and life

lessons the American Hereford Association, National Junior Hereford Association and Kansas Junior Hereford Association have taught me,” Brooke says. “ After graduating from high school in May 2014, Brooke plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue a dual major in agricultural business and food science. Ultimately, Brooke would like to be employed in a field related to food science where she hopes to promote the beef industry. Even in the future, Brooke plans to stay true to her Hereford roots by continuing to build her herd of purebred Hereford cattle and remaining active in the showring. “The Hereford industry is huge right now, and I am so happy to be a part of it,” Brooke says. “‘Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ is the only way to describe what this means to me. I’m honored to represent the breed that built me.”
