Greetings from the President of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. Happy Spring Hampton Family! Yes, the calendar says it should be spring, but the weather is saying something different, but I truly believe and pray that soon the birds will be chirping, the sun will be shining, and the warm weather will be surrounding us once again. Springtime means Holy Week is upon us and we will be celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! What a wonderful way to welcome in the spring! Spring also means that reunion time at our alma mater, Hampton University, is near and we will once again return to our “Home by the Sea,” which always warms my heart and uplift my spirits. This year we will be congratulating the Class of 1965 as they celebrate their 50 th anniversary year and joining the Emeritus Class. We will also be welcoming home the classes ending in 0 and 5, of which I will be celebrating my 35 th anniversary year with my Ubiquity classmates. We all have our own special reasons why we have so much Hampton pride, whether it stirs up memories of our classmates, the beautiful campus and waterfront, that special person you met on campus and married or the friends you have made for a lifetime. Whatever your reasons, I am so grateful that we are connected and belong to the Hampton Family, and no matter where we live, we always find our way back to our home away from home…Hampton (Institute) University! But as I reflect on our Hampton Pride, we also need to remember that we should be supporting our alma mater with our time and treasures. Hampton and the students need our financial support. We need to show our pride by giving back each and every year, not only during reunion year, but every year. Please don’t dwell on the negative reasons you should not give back, but think about all the wonderful memories you made here and all the future memories you will make each time you return back to our beautiful campus during homecoming and reunion weekends. If you have not had an opportunity to make a donation to Hampton, please consider making a donation. It does not have to be a certain amount. Every amount is valuable and important. The decision is yours and yours alone. Share the blessings that you have received and “let your life continue to do the singing” as you celebrate the coming of spring and the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. Greetings from the President of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc.

Happy Spring Hampton Family! Yes, the calendar says it should be

spring, but the weather is saying something different, but I truly believe and pray

that soon the birds will be chirping, the sun will be shining, and the warm weather

will be surrounding us once again.

Springtime means Holy Week is upon us and we will be celebrating the

resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! What a wonderful way to

welcome in the spring!

Spring also means that reunion time at our alma mater, Hampton

University, is near and we will once again return to our “Home by the Sea,”

which always warms my heart and uplift my spirits.

This year we will be congratulating the Class of 1965 as they celebrate

their 50th anniversary year and joining the Emeritus Class. We will also be welcoming home the classes

ending in 0 and 5, of which I will be celebrating my 35th anniversary year with my Ubiquity classmates.

We all have our own special reasons why we have so much Hampton pride, whether it stirs up

memories of our classmates, the beautiful campus and waterfront, that special person you met on campus

and married or the friends you have made for a lifetime. Whatever your reasons, I am so grateful that we

are connected and belong to the Hampton Family, and no matter where we live, we always find our way

back to our home away from home…Hampton (Institute) University!

But as I reflect on our Hampton Pride, we also need to remember that we should be supporting

our alma mater with our time and treasures. Hampton and the students need our financial support. We

need to show our pride by giving back each and every year, not only during reunion year, but every year.

Please don’t dwell on the negative reasons you should not give back, but think about all the wonderful

memories you made here and all the future memories you will make each time you return back to our

beautiful campus during homecoming and reunion weekends.

If you have not had an opportunity to make a donation to Hampton, please consider making a

donation. It does not have to be a certain amount. Every amount is valuable and important. The decision

is yours and yours alone. Share the blessings that you have received and “let your life continue to do the

singing” as you celebrate the coming of spring and the resurrection of our Lord and Savior.

The National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. would like to extend an invitation to all

Hamptonians to join us at our plenary session on Saturday morning, May 9th at 9:00 am in the movie

theater in the Student Center, with the Memorial Service, starting at 11:00 am in the same location. We

will be voting on the revisions to the NHAA, Inc. Bylaws and presenting information on our 12 th Biennial

convention being held in Richmond, VA in 2016. The Memorial Service will be a time of remembrance as

we lift up the names of our fellow Hamptonians who have transitioned since our last reunion weekend.

May you and your loved ones have a blessed and Happy Easter! May your spirit be renewed and

forgiveness and love embrace your heart with the love of Christ!

I look forward to seeing everyone during Reunion weekend!

ALUMNI GIVING BACK TO OUR HOME BY THE SEA

A true indicator of the love for and loyalty to one’s alma mater is the extent to which one is

willing to support it financially. It also happens to be a reliable indicator of excellence. As

it turns out, graduate giving is a very good barometer of how alumni view their colleges.

As virtually every college struggles through challenging economic times, knowing what

can be done to increase the level of alumni giving is valuable learning. Despite difficult

economic times, there are schools that continue to distinguish themselves for having

graduates who demonstrate enduring alumni love and financial support. But what are the

driving factors that make these schools and the other leaders so successful at generating

alumni support for their school, while others watch as alumni deny their request for money? Your Alumni Giving Co-

Chairs are carefully analyzing data from thousands of college graduates, and comparing it to the donation rates by

college to identify best practices and develop a few hypotheses as to the key factors that could be driving alumni

donations at our “Home by The Sea”. Stay tuned…

We will be also working closely with Class Leaders from the 0 and 5 graduating years to maximize their individual

class gifts during the Reunion Weekend. The giving goals per Class are:

2010 - $10,000; 2005 - $20,000; 2000 - $30,000; 1995 - $40,000; 1990 - $50,000; 1985 - $75,000; 1980 - $80,000;

1975 - $85,000; 1970 - $90,000; 1965 - $100,000; Emeritus Class - $250,000 (Annually)

UPDATE - With the help of the University, Office of Alumni Affairs (OAA) and AA Director Sharon (Gates)

Fitzgerald (‘05), the Alumni Giving Co-Chairs are excited to implement an initiative to facilitate increased Chapter

membership and Alumni Giving. For success, it is important to keep your contact information updated in the OAA. If

your information is not current or accurate, please use the following link to update the data: http://oaa.hamptonu.edu/

Proposed Changes to the Bylaws for the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc.

A review of the Bylaws for the National Hampton Alumni Association, Incorporated was

performed. During the review, the a number of concerns were identified. The concerns and

proposed changes are included in the following report.

Article I - Authority

Section 1: Purpose: Current: (c) Propose and manage an Annual Program Budget

Proposed Change: (c) Propose and manage an Annual Program Budget

Basis for Change: This part of Section 1: Purpose, should be removed because it is not our

mission, it's something we do to operate efficiently. All effective organizations have a budget.

Section 3: Elections: Current: An election of the national officers President, First Vice

President, Vice President (Eastern Regions), Vice President (Western Regions), Recording

Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer shall be conducted among the regular voting

membership in even-numbered years.

Proposed change: An election of the national officers for the board positions of National

President, First Vice President, Vice President (Eastern Regions), Vice President (Western

Regions), Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer shall be conducted

among the regular voting membership in even-numbered years.

Basis for change: To add clarity to the statement, and to accurately describe the position of

board president as "National" President.

Current: A ballot shall be prepared and distributed to each regular voting member by e-mail,

postal mail, and/or other electronic means by March 1st of the even-numbered years.

Proposed change: A ballot shall be prepared and distributed to each regular voting member by

e-mail, postal mail, and/or other electronic means by March 1st of the even-numbered years.

Basis for Change: the Bylaws won't have to be revised each time a new/different/more efficient

way of communicating with the membership is developed.

Article II - Membership

Current: There shall be three (3) classes of membership.

Section 1: Regular Voting Membership

All holders of degrees, diplomas, and certificates heretofore and hereinafter granted by Hampton

University and its predecessors, and all persons who attended Hampton University and its

Page 17: NATIONAL HAMPTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, INC. Alumni Newsnhaa.hamptonu.edu/media/docs/20150408_110031... · 2015. 4. 8. · National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. NATIONAL HAMPTON

2

predecessors for at least on semester (including a summer session) and left in good standing, are

afforded voting membership in the NHAA, Inc.

Proposed change: Current: There shall be three (3) four (4) classes of membership.

Section 1: Regular Voting Membership

All holders of degrees, diplomas, and certificates heretofore and hereinafter granted by Hampton

University and its predecessors, and all persons who attended Hampton University and its

predecessors for at least on semester (including a summer session) and left in good standing, are

afforded voting membership in the NHAA, Inc.

Section 5: Voting Membership

Any regular member, as defined in Section above, who has participated in alumni giving at least

once in the last five (5) years shall have voting rights in the NHAA, Inc.

Basis for Proposed Change:

First, according to our Bylaws, (Article 1 Section 1 Part a), one of the main purposes of NHAA

Inc. is to raise monies for Hampton University. Any person considered to be an active member

of an organization, with all membership privileges (including voting), should at least be a

supporter of the organization's mission or purpose. Second, this gives the regular member an

opportunity to show interest in HU and NHAA Inc. Even in US elections, ballots are not just

mailed out to any and every American citizen; a person has to show interest/initiative in voting -

they have to go to the polls or request an absentee ballot. Five (5) years will give each NHAA

Inc. regular member the opportunity to at least give during their reunion year if at no other time.

Since we don't have dues, this can be a means of distinguishing active vs. inactive membership.

third, since HU gives receipts for contributions, they would probably have updated contact

information for those persons. This will be helpful in making sure ballots reach every voting

member.

Article III - Board of Directors

Section 1: Current: The Board of Directors of the NHAA, Inc. shall consist of the following

persons:

a) The National President who is designated Chairman of the Board

5

Basis for Proposed Change: "and its predecessors" no longer applies. Former students who

attended Hampton Institute are no longer students; they are probably Alumni.

In addition, the purpose of the committee is unclear.

Current: (e) Mentorship-Career Network - shall coordinate all activities between the NHAA,

Inc. and students at Hampton University and its predecessor.

Proposed Change: (e) Mentorship-Career Network - shall coordinate all activities between the

NHAA, Inc. and students at Hampton University. and its predecessor.

6

2. Teller - shall assist in developing election procedures; shall be responsible for accurately

recording the ballot count of all national elections; shall be responsible for reporting the election

results to candidates prior to the Plenary Session.

Basis for proposed change: The current edition of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, states

in Chapter XVI, Nominations and Elections, in the section on Nominations by a Committee

committee or be a member of it- ex officio or otherwise."

To Hampton Nation Supporters... On February 21st we had our 1st teleconference board meeting. Our primary purpose was to engage, unite and connect alumni, former athletes and fans across the nation by utilizing social media, mobile and web platforms to promote athletics and the university under one umbrella.

Coming together is the beginning. Staying together is progress and working together is success.

Hampton nation’s

Goals and Objectives

With your assistance, our board can help Hampton University Athletics and the 16 teams, Build Leaders and Champions. By developing relation-ships with corporations, businesses, dedicated alumni, fans, and you, Hampton Nation will be able to reach their goals and objectives, provide scholarships, upgrade facilities and meet other priority needs of the ath-letic department.

If you would make a contribution to the Hampton Nation fund, you will enable us to meet our goals for the 2014-2015 Fiscal Year. All proceeds will go directly to athletics. Every gift is valued and tax deductible. We have also updated our website www.hamptonnation.com and created a Hampton Nation Facebook Page. Please like and share the link www.facebook.com/HamptonNation with potential donors. Thank you again for your support.
