NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATION NABE’s mission is to advocate for our nation’s Bilingual and English Language Learners and families and to cultivate a multilingual multicultural society by supporting and promoting policy, programs, pedagogy, research and professional development that yield academic success, value native language, lead to English proficiency, and respect cultural and linguistic diversity. Language, Learning and Achievement… Throughout our lives, language is what allows us to communicate with one another, and to understand the world around us. From the moment we are born, the famil- iar sounds and structures of language be- come tools for a lifetime of learning. During the first years of schooling, these tools sup- port children’s ability to understand and learn the subjects they are taught — from math to science, to history and art. In America, where children enter bilin- gual education programs speaking many different languages, students are taught English in the most effective and develop- mentally sound manner. They are also given the opportunity to learn important subject matter in their native language — to ensure they don’t fall behind. Excellence for America’s Success in a Global Economy Language minority children make up the fastest-growing sector of the American school-age population. Their numbers are projected to continue to increase steadily well into the coming decades. Furthermore, while these students were once concen- trated in a few urban areas, they are now as likely to attend school in places like Georgia, Iowa and Kansas, as they are to be in class- rooms in Los Angeles or New York City. Research about these children, and how they learn best, tells us that biliingual education students: • Learn English as quickly as possible, • Succeed academically, • Stay in school, • Perform better in important subject mat- ters such as math, science, and history, and • Prepare for the best opportunities in Amer- ica without losiing appreciation for their native language and culture. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATION

NABE’s mission is to advocate for our nation’s Bilingual and English Language

Learners and families and to cultivate a multilingual multicultural society by

supporting and promoting policy, programs, pedagogy, research and professional

development that yield academic success, value native language, lead to English

proficiency, and respect cultural and linguistic diversity.

Language, Learning and Achievement…

Throughout our lives, language is what allows us to communicate with one another, and to understand the world around us.

From the moment we are born, the famil-iar sounds and structures of language be-come tools for a lifetime of learning. During the first years of schooling, these tools sup-port children’s ability to understand and learn the subjects they are taught — from math to science, to history and art.

In America, where children enter bilin-gual education programs speaking many different languages, students are taught English in the most effective and develop-mentally sound manner. They are also given the opportunity to learn important subject matter in their native language — to ensure they don’t fall behind.

Excellence for America’s Success in a Global Economy

Language minority children make up the fastest-growing sector of the American school-age population. Their numbers are projected to continue to increase steadily well into the coming decades. Furthermore, while these students were once concen-trated in a few urban areas, they are now as likely to attend school in places like Georgia, Iowa and Kansas, as they are to be in class-rooms in Los Angeles or New York City.

Research about these children, and how they learn best, tells us that biliingual education students:• Learn English as quickly as possible,

• Succeed academically,

• Stay in school,

• Perform better in important subject mat-ters such as math, science, and history, and

• Prepare for the best opportunities in Amer-ica without losiing appreciation for their native language and culture.
