About the University

The University of Mysore was established on 27th July 1916 by its foundingfather, His Highness Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the then Maharaja ofMysore. It is the Sixth University established in the country, the very First in thePrincely State of Mysore and the first University in India to be assessed andaccredited with FIVE STAR status in 2000, re-accredited at A+ level in 2006 andre-accredited again in 2012 with a CGPA of 3.47 at A grade by the NationalAssessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Location of the University

Mysore city, where the University is located, is the cultural centre ofKarnataka. The city which was the capital of the Wodeyar dynasty, the rulers ofMysore, is famous for its palaces, temples, gardens and festivals. Tranquillity andpeace reign in this beautiful city where arts are kept alive along hoary traditions.Being a splendid tourist centre with historical monuments and unique architecture,it is famous for silk, sandalwood oil and artifacts of ivory and sandalwood. Thecity has salubrious climate throughout the year. It is about 140 kms. south west ofBangalore, the State capital, and is well connected by rail, road and air.

The postgraduate programmes of the University are distributed over threecampuses in addition to the main campus at Manasagangotri, Mysore. Thesethree campuses are located in Tubinakere near Mandya, Hemagangotri nearHassan and at Chamarajanagara. The Tubinakere campus near Mandya is knownas Sir M. Viswesvaraya Postgraduate Centre and is located on the Mysore-Bangalore highway at a distance of about 8 kms. from Mandya. The PostgraduateCentre at Hemagangotri, Hassan is located near Kenchattahalli village on theMangalore- Bangalore highway at a distance of about 10 kms. from Hassan.

Institutional Evolution

The University gained autonomy in 1956, and in 1960, the postgraduatecentre at the picturesque environs facing the beautiful Kukkarahalli lake was

established. The revered National Poet, former Vice-Chancellor of the Universityof Mysore and a Jnanapeetha awardee, Dr. K. V. Puttappa (Kuvempu), namedthe postgraduate campus as Manasagangotri. The campus spread over 350 acres,has a serene atmosphere. The well-groomed trees that surround the buildingsand the well laid-out avenues add to the beauty of the campus.

Originally the territorial jurisdiction of the University consisted of ninedistricts of Karnataka State. With the creation of Bangalore University in 1964,Mangalore University in 1980 and Kuvempu University in 1987, the territorialjurisdiction of the University of Mysore is now confined to the four southerndistricts of the State, viz, Chamarajanagara, Hassan, Mandya and Mysore.

Academic Programmes

The University of Mysore is offering graduate and postgraduate degree,diploma and certificate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. There are five faculties,viz., (1) Arts, (2) Commerce, (3) Education, (4) Law, (5) Science and Technology.

In the last eight decades, the University has served the cause of highereducation with distinction. Currently the University has 48 postgraduatedepartments at Manasagangotri campus, 6 postgraduate departments atTubinakere campus, 5 at Hemagangotri campus and 6 postgraduatedepartments at Satellite Centre, Chamarajanagara. The University offers 72postgraduate courses, 41 postgraduate diploma courses and many certificatecourses. The University also has 4 Constituent Colleges and 197 affiliatedcolleges, the total student strength being 1,15,000 of whom about 10,000 arepostgraduate students. In addition, there are about 3,200 Research Scholarspursuing research in various disciplines.

Many universities from abroad have entered into Memorandum ofUnderstanding with the University of Mysore for academic and researchcollaborations and promotion of cultural understanding.

The distinct strength of the University lies in providing high qualityteaching and research backed by well qualified and experienced teachers, with astrong focus on Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages, Law, PhysicalEducation, Pure and Applied Sciences, and Social Sciences. Most of thepostgraduate departments are of international repute and known for excellencein research. Research projects worth crores of rupees have been sanctioned tovarious University departments by national and international institutions andfunding agencies.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government ofIndia has recognized the Department of Studies (DoS) in Bio-Technology,Microbiology, Sericulture and Statistics under its FIST (Funds for Infra-structureDevelopment) programme.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognised the followingdepartments under its Special Assistance Programme: DoS in Bio-Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Earth Science, FoodScience and Nutrition, Journalism and Mass Communication, Kuvempu Instituteof Kannada Studies, Library and Information Science, Mathematics, Physics,Political Science, Statistics, Zoology. The Government of India has recognisedthe University as an Institution of Excellence.

Centre for Computer Science and Information Technology (CCSIT)

The University of Mysore has been in the forefront in extending non-formaleducation in Information Technology to the public through CCSIT, housed in theimposing Senate Hall complex at Manasagangotri. This is an ISO 9001-2000Certified Centre. CCSIT offers various postgraduate, postgraduate diploma anddiploma courses encompassing several horizons of Information Technology.

Students on the campus may acquire and upgrade their computer skillsconcurrently with their regular academic programmes, through non-formaltraining programmes offered by CCSIT and thus get themselves equipped to facethe challenges of the modern world.

Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC)

The EMMRC was established in 1996 as Audio-Visual Research Centre(AVRC). The name AVRC was changed to EMMRC in August 2004. This is theonly institution of its kind to be established by the UGC in the entire State ofKarnataka. EMMRC produces educational videos for 24 -hour educationaltelevision channel and Doordarshan's National Network DD-1.

University School of Design

The University School of Design was established in the year 2002 and islocated in the pristine environment of the Manasagangotri campus which iscondusive for the growth and promotion of creative and competitive design

ideas. The School promotes young talents in the professional field ofArchitecture and Design. The School offers B.Arch. and M.Arch. courses on aregular basis, approved by the Council of Architecture (COA), New Delhi. Thecurriculum is structured and imparted in an extremely student- friendly manner.A student graduating at any point is equipped and trained to handle projectsindependently or could work in an office or organization.

International School of Information Management (ISIM)

The ISIM of the University of Mysore offers M.Tech. programme inInformation Systems and Management in collaboration with the University ofMichigan, the Syracuse University, and the University of Pittsburg of U.S.A.,the Dalhousie University of Canada and the International Institute ofInformation Technology, and Informatics India of Bangalore. Support Services

Administrative Offices

The administrative offices of the University are housed in the CrawfordHall, an imposing building adjacent to the Kukkarahalli lake, known for its scenicsplendour. The Offices of the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Registrar(Evaluation), the Finance Officer and the Public Grievance Cell are located in thisbuilding. The Office of the Administrative Officer, situated at Manasagangotri,looks after the activities of the postgraduate campus.

Auditoria

Facilities for co-curricular activities exist in the University. There are fiveauditoria - one each at the Maharaja's College Centenary Building, the UniversityCollege of Fine Arts for Women, Humanities Block at Manasagangotri, BahadurInstitute of Management Studies (BIMS) and EMMRC. In addition, most of thedepartments have well-furnished conference halls. These facilities are availablefor use by the students for cultural programmes and competitions such asdebate, music, dance, drama and also for special lectures. Manasagangotri alsohas a spacious open-air theatre with a seating capacity of 10,000 where culturalprogrammes for large gatherings could be held.

Authorities of the University

The Principal Authorities of the University are the Syndicate, the AcademicCouncil, the Finance Committee, the Boards of Studies, the Faculties and thePlanning, Monitoring and Evaluation Board. The University is governed by theKarnataka State Universities' Act, 2000.

Banking Services

The State Bank of Mysore has two branches in the University, one at theManasagangotri Campus and the other at Crawford Hall, which provide bankingand ATM facilities.

Cafeteria

There is a centrally located canteen on Manasagangotri campus which catersto the needs of students, faculty and the general public.

Centre for Competitive Examinations

The Centre for Competitive Examinations located at EMMRC buildingprovides special training to equip students for various Competitive Examinationssuch as IAS, KAS, IPS, IFS, NET and SET, Banking Services etc.

Centre for Proficiency Development and Placement Service

Today, against the backdrop of globalization, candidates with proficiencyfor employability have manifold opportunities for placements. Proficiency is thekey to employability, individual excellence and social involvement. To gain anoverall proficiency, students need to be equipped with a variety of skills such ascommunication skills, language competency, analytical skills, application skills,organizational skills, inter-personal skills, innovative skills, entrepreneurial skills,etc. Keeping in view the need for systematizing the activities of skill development,proficiency enhancement, and personality development, and establishing liaisonsfor placements, the University of Mysore has established the Centre for ProficiencyDevelopment and Placement Service (CPDPS). The Centre keeps liaison withdifferent Institutions, Industries, Government Departments and such otherorganizations, and collects information about job opportunities and creates andmaintains up-to-date database in this respect. It facilitates unemployed graduatesand postgraduates so that they could be placed in different sectors through on-campus and off-campus interviews, and other modes of selection processes.

Employment, Information and Guidance Bureau

The University Employment, Information and Guidance Bureau, locatedin the University Library building at Manasagangotri provides information oncourses and careers. Pamphlets and booklets are displayed at the Bureau Office.Lectures and seminars are arranged in various colleges to highlight employmentopportunities. Information about courses in other universities within the countryand abroad is also provided. Students can register their names for employmentassistance at the Bureau.

Health Centres

There are two Health Centers - one located on Maharaja's College campusand the other at the Manasagangotri campus of the University of Mysore, to takecare of the medical needs of the students, faculty and staff of the University.

International Centre

The International Centre is located at the University College of Fine Artsat Manasagangotri. This is a single-window system facilitating the academicrequirements of foreign students. It provides guidance and counseling to foreignstudents regarding admission to various courses in the University, besidesassisting them in matters relating to eligibility, residential permits, bonafidecertificates, etc.

Internet Access

The Manasagangotri campus and all postgraduate departments and libraryhave wired and wireless internet browsing facilities. More details can be hadfrom ICD (Information Communication Division), DoS in Computer Science.

K-SET CentreThe UGC has prescribed that a person aspiring to become an Assistant

Professor in Universities / Colleges has to qualify in NET (National EligibilityTest) / SET (State Eligibility Test). The UGC and Government of Karnataka haveidentified University of Mysore as a Nodal Agency to conduct Karnataka SET (K-SET) for Lecturership and this K-SET Centre is located in Pareeksha Bhavan,behind Crawford Hall, University of Mysore, Mysore.

During the year 2013, the K-SET Centre will conduct examinations in 32different subjects in line with NET examinations being conducted by the UGC.Details regarding the SET examination are available on the K-SET Centre websitewww.kset.uni-mysore.ac.in.

Library

The University Library located on the Manasagangotri campus caters to theneeds of students, research scholars and faculty of the University. More than 75,000bound volumes of journals and nearly six lakh reference and textbooks are availablehere. The library also enables access to 18000 e-books, 7500 e-journals and onlinepublic access catalogue. The following services are provided by the library:

• In-house reference, consultation and home-lending,

• Inter-library loan facility,

• In-house photocopying facility,

• Textbook reference,

• Textbook loan service,

• Digital Information Resource Centre,

• Centre for Information Resources for Competitive Examinations,

• Access is enabled to more than 7500 UGC-Infonet Journals and 18000e-books,

• Assistive technologies has been installed to facilitate access toinformation resources for visually challenged students.

The Library is kept open between 8 AM and 8 PM on all working days,throughout the year, except on holidays. Departmental libraries are also availablein some of the postgraduate departments.

Postal Services

India Post is running two Post Offices, one at the Manasagangotri campusand the other at Crawford Hall with savings/recurring deposits, telephone andSpeed Post services.

Scholarships

The State and Central Governments have been awarding a number ofscholarships to meritorious and deserving students. Subject scholarships andendowment scholarships are also available. In addition, special scholarships forchildren of political sufferers, defence personnel and physically challenged areavailable. Students belonging to economically weaker sections of the societyhave the benefit of free studentships.

Special Cell for SC/ ST

There is a Special Cell to look after the welfare of SC/ST students. The cellalso awards fellowships to students for carrying out research. Special coachingclasses are conducted for the benefit of SC/ST students appearing for competitiveexaminations, such as IAS, KAS, IPS, NET and SET. Training is offered in theapplication of computer techniques as well. Bridge-courses are conducted forpromoting communication skills, writing and oratory skills. The Cell has a goodlibrary facility with books on general knowledge and computers. Financialassistance is also provided to students of the postgraduate departments throughthe state directorate of social welfare.

Sports Facilities

A separate Directorate of Physical Education looks after the sportsactivities. The postgraduate sports council looks after sports activity in theManasagangotri campus. The University of Mysore has vast sports fields, cricketstadium, tennis courts, gymnasium and a well-maintained swimming pool thatcater to the needs of students, faculty and sports lovers of the city.

Student Welfare

A separate Directorate of Student Welfare located at EMMRC building atManasagangotri campus, looks after the student welfare programmes in theUniversity. The students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities,such as literary and cultural competitions, Inter-Collegiate and Inter-Universitycompetitions. The State/ Zonal/ National/ International Youth Festivals are alsoarranged from time to time.

Transport Services

The KSRTC plies city buses to the campus from all corners of the city witha frequency of 20 minutes. The campus is about 6 kms. from the Central BusStation and 3 kms. from the City Railway Station.

University Complaint Committee and Sensitization to Prevention and Redressalof Sexual Harassment

As per UGC guidelines, the university has constituted an Apex Body ofSPARSH (Sensitization to Prevention and Redressal of Sexual Harassment) toemphasize the commitment of the University to provide a workplace free ofgender-based discrimination, sexual harassment and other acts of gender–based

violence and to promote an environment in the workplace which will raiseawareness about gender-based discrimination and prevent sexual harassmentand other acts of gender-based violence.

The University has also constituted University Complaint Committee(UCC) as per the recent guidelines of the UGC to comply with the directives ofthe Supreme Court enjoining all employees to develop and implement a policyagainst sexual harassment at the workplace, to evolve a permanent mechanismfor prevention and redressal of gender-based discrimination, sexual harassmentand other acts of gender-based violence and to ensure that the provisions of thestatutes are implemented in letter and spirit.

Women's Facilities Centre

The University has an independent Women's Facilities Centre located nextto the Department of Studies in Computer Science at Manasagangotri campus.This is meant for women students commuting from different places who needcommon resting facility.

Fair Practices

AADHAR Number

As per instructions from the Government, all financial benefits to eligiblestudents like reimbursement of examination/tuition fees, scholarships, etc.,shall be transfered directly through bank, linked to AADHAR number. Studentsshall open a bank account and link this to their AADHAR number for availingsuch benefits. Details have to be provided in the Application form. Those whodo not have AADHAR Number/Bank account are encouraged to get AADHARNumber and link it to their bank account.

Anti-Ragging

The University of Mysore has zero tolerance to ragging which is apunishable offence. Every student has to sign a declaration that he/she will notindulge in any form of ragging and other unlawful activities.

No Smoking Area

All the postgraduate campuses coming under the jurisdiction of theUniversity of Mysore are declared "No Smoking Areas" and any violation in thisregard would invite severe punishment.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

Candidates applying for admission to Master's Degree / Postgraduatediploma courses must have obtained a minimum of 45% (40% in case ofSC/ST and Category-I candidates) of marks in Cognate/Optional subjects puttogether from all the years of the examinations of the course. However, deviations,if any, are mentioned in the table below against specific courses. SC, ST, Cat-Istudents shall be given 5% relaxation in eligibility marks.

In case a candidate has taken longer than the prescribed duration to passthe qualifying course, a deduction of 3% from the percentage of the aggregate ofmarks of Cognate/Optional subjects for every additional year shall be appliedand the candidates must have obtained the minimum marks prescribed even aftersuch deduction, to become eligible for admission.

(a) Under Scheme 'A' and Scheme 'B'

The intake for Scheme 'A' is fixed by the University and Scheme 'B' seatsconsist of not more than 50% of the seats available under Scheme 'A' for eachcourse. Reservations to an extent of 15%, 3% and 4% of seats are earmarkedrespectively for SC, ST and Category-I candidates and additional two seats areavailable for foreign nationals. All applicants will be considered both underSchemes 'A' and 'B'. All the admissions, including those under Scheme 'B', aremade strictly in accordance with merit-cum-reservation.

(b) Courses through KEA

All admissions for Courses through Common Entrance Test conducted byKarnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), Bangalore will be made by the KEAdirectly.

(c) Application Form for Courses : Application Forms may be purchased fromthe Administrative Office, Senate Bhavan, Manasagangotri, Mysore - 570 006.

The Application form contains two parts:Part I : Admission particulars with details of entrance examination results.Part II : Form for admission under Special Categories (Sports, NCC,NSS etc.).

(i) Instructions to Candidates for Admission

1. Applications received after the Due Date will not be entertained. 2. Application with incomplete or incorrect information is liable for rejection. 3. All Original Documents should be produced at the time of admission.

Original Degree marks cards and other Certificates produced at the time ofadmission will not be returned until completion of the Course or cancellationof admission. Hence, sufficient photocopies of these may be preservedbefore submitting the originals.

4. Four stamp-size photographs should be produced.

5. Foreign students are required to produce valid Student VISA andResidential Permit at the time of admission.

6. A student admitted to a Degree / Postgraduate Degree Course is notpermitted to study any other Degree / Postgraduate Degree Coursesimultaneously in this or any other University (regular, morning or evening,correspondence).

7. If a candidate fails to get a seat under Scheme 'A', he/she will beautomatically considered under Scheme 'B'.

8. Self-Attested copies of the required certificates / marks cards or photostatcopies of certificates issued by the Competent Authority should be attachedalong with the application. Originals should be produced only at the timeof admission.

9. Latest Income Certificate obtained by competent authority shall only beenclosed.

10. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/Cat.-1 claiming seats under fee concessionshall submit the caste certificate in original at the time of admission.

11. NO SEPARATE INTIMATION WILL BE SENT TO THE SELECTED /WAIT- LISTED CANDIDATES. The lists will be announced on the NoticeBoard of the respective Departments and on the University of Mysorewebsite: http://www.uni-mysore.ac.in. REFUND OF FEES

Fee once paid will not be refunded, excepting in the following cases (forboth Scheme 'A' & Scheme 'B') :

1. When the course is discontinued by the University for unavoidablereasons (number of candidates is less than five).

2. When excess fee is paid.3. When fee is paid more than once for the same purpose.4. When a candidate gets a transfer to another Department and the vacancy

in the earlier Department is filled by another candidate, the surplusdifference (if any) will be refunded.

5. When the admission is cancelled due to a mistake by the Department/Institution.
