The National AfterSchool Association is the voice of the afterschool profession; the national membership organization for professionals who work with and on behalf of children and youth during out-of-school time.

No Presentation Experience? No Problem! Many of our presenters do not have experience in public speaking, but have spent years in afterschool and out-of-school time programs.
Convention is your opportunity to share what you do well, connect with peers, and advance the field.
We train all presenters with two webinars leading up to Convention.

Guidelines
Our goal is to provide engaging and comprehensive professional development.
To be considered for review, all proposals must be fully completed and submitted and include the title, description, and contact info for all presenters.
All sessions have at least one lead presenter and there can be no more than four presenters total.
All aspects of the proposal should be written in complete sentences.
This is your opportunity to make an impression, please be as professional as possible.
Requirements1. All Presenters and Co-Presenters Must Register for
Convention – Lead presenters are offered a $200 discount on registration fees. You must cover travel, lodging, and expenses on your own. Registration rates depend on NAA member status and the date by which you register. See more: http://naaweb.org/attend/registration
2. Plan to Attend the Entire Convention – If accepted, you’ll find out the time of your presentation on January 12, 2018. We cannot accommodate scheduling requests or work around any pre-booked flights. If you have to book before January 12, please plan to come for the entire Convention.
3. AV, Room Setup Requests Not Guaranteed – We’ll ask if you require tables, chairs, or no tables/chairs, as well as your AV needs. However, those requests are not guaranteed.
Session Content
We’re interested in:• Highlighting those doing the best or most innovative work so that
others may replicate it• Diversity of content, speakers, and perspectives• Practical training that excites and engages• Hands-on and interactive activities in workshops; TED-like talks in
Spark Sessions• Variety of formats/lengths of presentations
Session Formats
Workshop Sessions• 60 minutes• Required: at least 10 minutes of audience Q&A or interactive
discussion• Recommended: Plan for 35-45 minutes of content; focus on audience
engagement and interactive activities• Can be a workshop/training or panel (maximum of 3 panelists + 1
moderator) • Up to 20 concurrent workshop sessions in a single block
Tip: We are least likely to accept a panel proposal. Consider limiting to two co-presenters.
Session Formats
Spark Sessions• 30-minute presentations that briefly highlight something great your program
is doing and that others can replicate• Share key takeaways, a short lecture, or TED talk-style presentation• Hosted at the end of the day, every day• No Q&A or audience engagement required• Up to 10 concurrent express sessions each day• Very popular – placed in larger rooms• In previous years, these were known as “Express Sessions”
Session Formats
Intensives• New this year!• 2.5 hours long• Deep dive into a topic with opportunities to explore further with
more in-depth, hands-on active learning experiences• Tend to focus on leadership and professional development• Intended to be hosted by experienced trainers and leaders• Likely will be scheduled in smaller rooms

Exhibitor Sessions• Offered as workshops or spark sessions • Offered on Monday and Tuesday throughout Convention• Offered only to confirmed Exhibitors
You’ll notice there’s a question about this at the beginning of the application (Are you promoting a product or service for purchase or free as part of your session?). Answer honestly. If selected, you may be asked to purchase a space in the Exhibit Hall in order to present your session.

Developing Leaders and Advocating for Afterschool and the Profession(NAA Core Knowledge Competency 10)
Entry Developing Proficient Advanced Mastery
Continuum of Professionals in the Afterschool Field
This is all about the experience, training, and backgroundthe audience needs to have to fully participate in your session. (Not about your level!)
Content Level
Developing (NAA’s Core Knowledge Competency Level 2) Work directly with youth in a variety of settings. Assumes about 1-2 years of experience working directly with youth. Need information and professional development on basic youth development concepts, examples of quality, free tools and resources, guidance, feedback, and direction. Content should be at a a basic level and assume little experience or understanding of the session topic.
Content Level
Proficient Professionals and Emerging Leaders (NAA’s Core Knowledge Competency Level 3)
Likely in a supervisory role and may still directly interact with youth. Skilled and knowledgeable in many core competencies, but still developing managerial and leadership skills.
Need opportunities to talk with others in the field, exposure to leaders, and understanding of the breadth and depth of the field. Interested in research, resources, and practical strategies that will help them meet their goals, solve problems, build their managerial and leadership skills to advance their careers, and improve their organizations.
Advanced Professionals and Current Leaders (NAA’s Core Knowledge Competency Level 4)
Most likely works on behalf of children and youth, not directly with them. Supervises multiple staff or sites, and/or is an organizational leader. High level of knowledge and skills and want opportunities to demonstrate leadership, share work, and network.
Interested in opportunities to talk with others or challenge ideas. Interested in sharing and learning with others and access to the latest research and cutting-edge information and opportunities to provide input to advance the field.
Turning Your Idea Into a Session
Start with an IdeaWhat do you have particular expertise in or do particularly well? What new tool or approach are you using that others should use? Why is it important – and to whom?
Consider the ParticipantWhat do your audience members do? What skills do they need? What issues or questions do they regularly face? Why they would want to attend?
Plan Your Major Points First What’s the point? How will you get there? What examples will illustrate your point?
How Will You Reinforce Learning? Small group work, self-assessments, role play, problem solving, etc.
Ready to Submit?
Download the Session Proposal Template to prepare your proposal. Share your draft with friends, colleagues, and family. Get feedback! Print it our and copy edit it.
Once final, log into the Presenter Portal to formally submit your proposal. We do not accept proposals via email.
Submit by midnight EST on Monday, October 16!

Review Committee: NAA board members, afterschool and educational leaders
We review all aspects of your proposal. Incomplete proposals will be automatically disqualified.
We will rank sessions based on quality and variety. If two sessions are on the same subject we will select one.
