As we move forward, we find ourselves on stronger ground, aswe have overcome a number of challenges these past few yearsowing much to the leadership of Roberta Jamieson. Her driveand determination to bring the Foundation into the 21stCentury ensuring that we are providing the standard of servicethat the Foundation has become known for – Excellence – isremarkable and we are grateful to have a person such as Robertaleading the Foundation. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Icongratulate her and the Foundation staff for another fantasticjob well done.

Accomplishments have been many this past year; from the amaz-ing success of the 2007 National Aboriginal AchievementAwards held in Edmonton; to our Scholarships where we provid-ed over $2.8 million to deserving Aboriginal youth; andstrengthening our existing relationships and creating new onesfrom coast to coast to coast to inform the Aboriginal peoples ofCanada of all that we have to offer.

It has also been a year where we are saying goodbye to a numberof individuals who have been apart of the Foundation family;one of Canada’s greatest Achievers, an Award recipient and for-mer board member, Suzanne Rochon-Burnett, who touched sovery many people and will continue to do so through her manyaccomplishments will be greatly missed. As part of any growingorganization, we are sad to see long time Board members Dr.Verna Kirkness and Dr. Olive Dickason step down from theirrespective Director positions. We know they will continue toinspire and encourage Aboriginal peoples wherever their jour-neys may take them. Coming full circle, we are very pleased towelcome Dr. Cornelia Wieman a former Achievement Awardrecipient and outstanding individual to our Foundation’s boardand we look forward to her contributions and energy for manyyears to come.

The reason for the Foundation’s existence, our First Nations,Inuit and Métis youth of Canada, never cease to amaze me as totheir resiliency, and their ability to overcome challenges in orderto pursue their dreams. The Aboriginal youth of Canada exudethe promise of greatness and I am honoured to serve them aspart of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, theytruly are Canada’s future.

The future is bright due to the continued support of our manygovernment and corporate sponsors. Their significant contribu-tions provide the means for our youth to take control of theirdreams now and in the future.

I also wish to recognize our First Nations, Inuit and Métis com-munities for their support, understanding and encouragementover the past year.

Message from the Chair of the Board

Each year, the Foundation experiences new achievements, opportunities and challenges. This past year alone, we strengthened our capacity, and organized our operations, all sothe Foundation can continue to fulfill its mandate; supporting Aboriginal achievementand contributing to the future of First Nations, Inuit, Métis youth and all of Canada. Iam delighted to confirm that the Foundation has received an additional $10 millionendowment from the Government of Canada to to support our scholarships and bursariesprogram. This brings the total endowment funds received from the Government ofCanada to $ 22 Million; the total of the Foundation’s trust funds now exceeds $27 Million.I am very happy to share more of the Foundation’s notable highlights from 2006-2007which include:

•Awarding $2,872,500 in scholarships and bursaries, the largest amount ever awarded.

•Mounting the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in Edmonton and broadcastnationally on Global TV and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, which was atremendous success! With a decidedly energetic orientation towards youth and thefuture, the Awards captured an unprecedented number of Canadian viewers who expe-rienced the message of our people’s contributions and the bountiful talent and poten-tial we offer;

•Creating and coordinating the Kenny Family Foundation Think-tank on AboriginalEducation, featuring some of the best and brightest minds in Aboriginal education pro-ducing one of the more comprehensive papers on the status of First Nations, Inuit andMétis education;

•Coordinating and hosting a National Aboriginal Youth Roundtable, in order toconsult and gather critical feedback from Canada’s most important and fastestgrowing resource; the First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth of Canada. So we maybe able to plan, create and implement the best and most effective programs need-ed by our Aboriginal youth now and in the future.

•Producing our first-ever career fair north of 60 in Yellowknife, as well as extending theFoundation’s outreach and exposure in the Eastern Arctic and in the Atlantic Region.

Message from the CEO

Roberta Eastern Arctic Tour AboveKenny Family Foundation: Thinktank on Aboriginal Education

In addition to these highlights, the Foundation carried on with an essential element of itswork; helping corporate, government, and individual sponsors invest resources towardrealization of the potential of First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth. We encourage othersto join our sponsor group in making this investment one of Canada’s number one priori-ties, a fundamental ingredient of a prosperous future.

Our task as a Foundation is to provide a practical, efficient, and ideal mechanism toensure that every First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth is motivated and confident to real-ize their potential, and if they wish to advance they do so unhindered, and not for a lackof funds.

While the Foundation already provides more scholarship funding to First Nations, Inuitand Métis youth than any other agency in Canada outside the federal government, noneof us can be satisfied. I know we can do more.

The current and unacceptable gap between the number of graduates and achievers ofAboriginal youth compared to Canadian youth generally will not close on its own. Indeed,if history is an indicator, it will widen and be passed on to the next generation, unless suf-ficient resources for those who wish to advance are made available. To help combat thisever increasing gap, my commitment is to hone the Foundation’s approach so that it pro-vides the best possible results from all the resources we have available.

We know about “dream-catchers”. The Foundation is a “dream-realizer”, and I invite allwho read these words to join in that mission. I am proud that the Foundation demon-strates it gets results for the money in an accountable and transparent manner, producingbetter services with a balanced budget. I am proud to share with you our Annual Reportfor 2006-2007.

“…As Iroquois, we were agricultural farmers; our leaders tell us to plant seeds each year since wewill require this expertise, in the future. In closing, with my involvement in education I may sow aseed of interest in a young students mind to further continue their education. Perhaps I am a rolemodel as Alwyn Morris, (a Mohawk from Kahnawake, who won the gold medal for kayaking in1984 who said “if you have it in you to dream, you have it in you to succeed”) was to me when Iwas a teenager.

In closing, being selected for this bursary will allow me to concentrate more on finishing this degree.I hope young aboriginals will follow my path by reflecting my accomplishments and believing that,if I can do it, they can do it as well.”

TAKING PULSE

Taking Pulse works to connect First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth to meaningfulcareers in a variety of industries. The principle objective of this innovative and collec-tive effort is to increase Aboriginal participation in the Canadian workforce.

The Taking Pulse initiative began in 2001 from broad based consultations thatengaged educators, provincial and federal officials, private sector representatives, andAboriginal people from across Canada in collaborative discussions on identifyingissues and recommending positive solutions.

Today, Taking Pulse strives to meet its objectives through two initiatives: Industry inthe Classroom and the Rivers to Success program now in the developmental phase.

Industry in the Classroom: Connecting Youth and CareersIndustry in the Classroom is a series of curriculum modules designed to increaseawareness amongst Aboriginal youth about the various career opportunities in theCanadian workforce. Through these curriculum modules students are recruited tocareers in various industries and are motivated to stay in school. To date modules havebeen produced on the Railway, Transportation, Justice, and Health industries, includ-ing a separate module on Inuit Health careers.

The Foundation has partnered with Canadian corporations, federal departments, national organizations, and other private sector companies to implement Industry inthe classroom. Aboriginal educators and youth participated in focus groups and direct-ed the curriculum’s design.

Industry in the Classroom is made available free-of-charge to high schools that have asignificant population of Aboriginal students, including day schools, First Nationsschools, provincial public schools, private schools, and training centres. NAAF identi-fies a national Aboriginal role model/champion to pair with an industry-specificAboriginal expert for a maximum group of 25 Aboriginal students per session.Included with the workshop are an interactive curriculum manual for educators, pro-

motional materials, scholarship information, and an industry-specific, Aboriginal-pro-duced 24-minute video that shows students career possibilities through humour, hip-hop music, and interviews with real life Aboriginal professionals.

Over the year, numerous sessions of the Health Careers module and the Inuit HealthCareers module were delivered in high school classrooms across the country. A newmodule was developed to profile careers in the environmental health field for HealthCanada on Environment Health Officers and includes a resource manual, promotion-al materials and a DVD with a menu; it is available in English and French. In addition,a special pilot delivery via video conference of the Health Careers module was success-fully conducted in Saskatchewan.

This past year we had two fantastic AboriginalYouth Role Models deliver the Health Career andInuit Health Career modules; Jeff Copenace,Consultant and a former advisor to past PrimeMinister, Paul Martin and Sylvia Watt-Cloutier, anInuk performer and motivational speaker.

"Speaking with Aboriginal students across the country onbehalf of the Achievement Foundation has proven to be themost rewarding and important work I've ever performed.Seeing the potential that exists within our communities isincredibly exciting. Our People have a very bright futureahead."

Rivers to Success.

This initiative is being developed to inspire, motivate and facilitate the return to schoolof Aboriginal at-risk youth who have left school within a three year period prior to enter-ing the program. Our primary target group is Aboriginal youth aged 15 to 19 but werecognize the needs of students under the age of 15 and those over age 19.The key focusis collaboration with existing services offered at the local, regional and national levelsand making them accessible to First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth as a first step on thepath of their return to a path to achieving a career through education and training..

During this past year in partnership with Human Resources Skills Development Canada, the Foundation focussed its efforts in Nunavut and produced a “limited” gap analysisand inventory of existing youth programs and services available in the Territory.

As part of this initial step a Youth Forum facilitated by Sylvia Cloutier, Inuk, fromIqaluit, was conducted in Rankin Inlet on March 22 & 23, 2007, at the conclusion ofwhich a number of recommendations regarding next steps were produced.

Blueprint for the FutureA Solid Investment in the Future

Blueprint for the Future is a series of one-day career fairs held for First Nations, Inuitand Métis Youth by the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation. More than 28,000 Aboriginal students from across the country have attended BFFcareer fairs over the event’s 11-year history. Students from Vancouver to Halifaxhave had the opportunity to meet experts in their fields, learn about individualcareer options, the education and training required, and the employment trends inthese areas. These highly motivating and inspirational career fairs are geared to pro-vide students with the incentives necessary to set their individual career paths. Thisimportant link is a first step toward their return into the Canadian workforce.

The Foundation conducted its first-ever North of 60 Blueprint For the Future CareerFair in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories on November 25, 2006, at the St. Patrickand Weledeh Schools. This amazing event was hosted by Tamara Podemski, rolemodel, actress, singer and dancer. She had this to say after the event:

“I chose to be at Blueprint for the Future because I am an avid supporter of this youth initiativeand I believe it makes a huge difference in the students' lives. I also feel that BFF celebrates thesame message that I put forth with my music: empowerment, freedom to make choices, culturalvalues, and the Teachings.

As much as the participants were inspired that day, so was I. BFF reminded me about my owncareer path which, coincidentally, started with the Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, too, over10 years ago. The sight from the stage, looking out at 250 Aboriginal youth, was heartwarming.I could feel the dreams and the aspirations of the next generation and that was the most excitingpart of it all. I am so honoured to have been a part of that day.”

NAAF held the second Blueprint For The Future in Halifax, Nova Scotia onFebruary 27, 2007 at the World Trade and Convention Centre.

Career fairs are scheduled in Montreal and Whitehorse for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.

“Many rural students mistakenly believe that med-ical school is academically and financially out oftheir reach. I am helping Rural Physicians ActionPlan (RPAP) draw up a list of bursaries and schol-arships (including NAAF) to give to students to helpdispel the myth that medical school is not achievable.I also try to act as a role model so that the studentscan see that it is possible to pursue a career in medi-cine.” - Glen Armstrong

The combination of my expe-riences has shown me that with a formal legal educa-tion I can improve situations much like those beforeme as I write this letter. I see a very positive futurefor Aboriginal people and believe that the rigour of alegal education will help to participate at a moremeaningful and fulfilling level.”
