Today is our twelfth encounter with Bracknell, encounters that go all the way back to Season 1992/3 in the old Southern Counties days. When we were promoted in 1995/6, Bracknell remained in SC but rejoined us in 1996/7 in SW2E which was the second season of a remarkable rise by Bracknell in successive years that took them from what was Level 8 (SC) to Level 3 in the then National 2. Two seasons later they reached Level 2, the then National 1. In all they remained at Level 4 or better for eight seasons before coming back to Level 5 for the 2007/8 season where they have remained ever since other than a dip into Level 6 for the 2012/3 season (SW1E) occasionally flitting over London SE by a way of change which seems to suggest was the way we avoided defeat as the last three results show. This history suggest we have a tough task this afternoon as does four successive wins, three with bonus points, which has seen Bracknell recover from a shaky start to the season by climbing three places to 8th, just one below us split only by points difference. So we welcome Bracknell this afternoon for what promises to be an intriguing match with both of us having had success over the top two in the division recently and us wanting to break our recent duck against them.
A couple or so milestones will be reached today: Alex Everett-Bolter plays for the 25th time today and Joe Rees plays No 8 for the 50th time. He is second only to the legendary Andrew Freeman, known as ‘Babe’ such a short time ago. Toby Kenneally will set a new debut-season record of 11 consecutive appearances as lock, breaking the second oldest club league record set by Paul Burkenshaw in 1987/8 when it was only a ten game league season. Another unwelcome statistic emerged this week in that more than a third of the players selected for the 1st XV this season are unavailable today. It is such figures that have dashed our hopes of fielding a fifth XV this season and we have had to them pull out of the league. However it is good to see youngsters such as Sam Bailey and Loui Giunta making a reappearance
We also welcome our Old Boys this afternoon and hope they have enjoyed their lunch. Some of their number appear in the team list for our first game against Bracknell shown in the centre spread so hopefully that will jog a few memories. The players are also delighted that a loyal band support them through thick and thin covering any number of miles in so doing.
Can I also say a big ‘thank you’ to all those volunteers, particularly those who have joined us this season from a vibrant and supportive Academy & Mini Section. Without such support, it simply doesn’t work.
The Iceman cometh in the form of Zerren Bell our referee this afternoon. We have met Zerren a couple of times before: up at Hornets in February 2015 and for the Barnstaple game here at Chapel Gate in November the same year. Zerren’s mentor today is Simon Thomas who has visited us numerous times and he and Zerren are most welcome and hope both enjoy their visit.
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all and ‘thank you’ for your support throughout the season.Doug Warren, President.

Club History (Since 1991).In 1991 the Club appointed former England and Wasps prop Paul ‘The Judge’ Rendall whose tenure, probably, had the greatest impact on the Club in its history. In 1991/2 the Club reached the semi final of the National Junior Cup, losing to Bradford Salem at Nottingham RFC, just missing out on a final at Twickenham and in 1992/3 gained promotion to Southern Counties. At the beginning of 1995/6 the Club toured Zimbabwe. Later, having already gained promotion, the Club secured its first Berkshire Cup, defeating Maidenhead 22-21.The years 1996-1999 saw three successive promotions to National 2 for the 1998/9 season, setting a Club record of 53 consecutive league home wins in the process. After just two seasons, the Club gained promotion to National 1 for 2001/2 (level 2). Few will forget beating Coventry at Lily Hill, plus playing other such distinguished clubs as Moseley, Exeter, Rugby, Bedford, Rotherham, Worcester, Otley and London Welsh. The Club was honoured with a Civic Reception given by Bracknell Forest Borough Council, the Mayor presenting an inscribed memento, to mark the Club’s promotion to National 1.However, the dream of playing in National 1 did not last long. It had grown up too fast and the Club was not ready for the rigours that awaited it. Despite relegation to National 2, the Club still had ambitions to move upwards and, with the appointment of a new full time Director of Rugby, this looked possible. However the dream was not fulfilled and a frustrating and disappointing period resulted in relegation to N3S for 2005/6. However, despite the efforts of a practically new team, they were immediately relegated to SWl.In 2006/7, having lost six of its opening matches, Chris Sheasby, (ex England, London Irish and Harlequins) was appointed player coach. The Club subsequently won eight out of ten matches in the second half of the season and beat Maidenhead 51-14 in the Berkshire Cup. In 2007/8 Bracknell led SW1 for much of the season but lost to Worthing in the play off. The Club also lost to Birkenhead Park in the semi-final of the Intermediate Cup. In 2008/9 the Club again lost in the play-offs this time to Barnes but won the Berkshire Cup, defeating Redingensians 41-22.For 2009/0 the Club played in National 3 London & SE, finishing third behind Jersey and Old Albanians and retained the Berkshire Cup defeating Broadmoor Staff 74-10.In 2010/1 Bracknell finished fifth in National 3 London & SE but were relegated the following season (2011/2) moving to SW1E for 2012/3. The Club appointed Rory Greenslade-Jones as club coach and the 1st XV won SW1E at the first attempt. In 2013/4, they finished third in N3SW and won the Berkshire Cup, defeating Maidenhead 41-17. 2014/5 was Bracknell’s Diamond Jubilee and Club president, Jonathan Dance, was elected RFU President at the RFU’s annual general meeting in July 2014.
