KEEPING MUSIC ALIVE! Nat King Cole Generation Hope values music as a critical learning tool that keeps students engaged in school, helps develop well-rounded individuals and encourages skills that are vital for success in the 21st century. critical thinking and leadership skills; and fosters self-esteem and the ability to work cooperatively in teams.

Since 2008, Nat King Cole Generation Hope has raised over $1,200,000 and provided music education, which has benefited thousands of children, to the following schools and organizations:

STUDENTS WITH GREATEST NEED RECEIVE MUSIC INSTRUCTION AT

TWO WEEK CAMP

80 string students from four Title 1 Palm Beach County elementary schools; Berkshire, Egret Lake, Plumosa and U. B. Kinsey/Palmview; converged on the prestigious Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center to attend the Nat King Cole Generation Hope, Inc. Summer Strings @ Lynn University for its fifth year. This life changing experience provided students an opportunity to receive the highest quality string instruction from Lynn Conservatory of Music graduate and undergraduate student mentors as well as School District of Palm Beach County Orchestra Directors and former Summer Strings alumni. Students received individual, small group and large ensemble instruction that has been compared to a full year of instruction.

The two week-long camp, from Monday, June 13th to Friday, June 24th, culminated in a free concert performed in the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center and attended by over 300 parents, friends and community members.

Summer Strings is generously supported by a grant from the Boca West Foundation and in-kind support from the School District of Palm Beach County, Lynn University and Costco.

For more information about the Summer Strings Camp and Nat King Cole Generation Hope, contact Shanna St. John at [email protected].

For information about the Lynn Conservatory and its mentors, contact Manuel Capote at 561-237-7156 or [email protected].

Nat King Cole Generation Hope would like to express our heartfelt thanks for the ongoing support shown by the Boca West Foundation and their entire community.

As a beneficiary of their Golf Challenge and Concert for the Children, we received $64,725 which not only funded an additional week of our Summer Strings camp but will fund a music mentor program in partnership with Lynn University and the School District of Palm Beach County in the fall.

THE NAT AND MARIA COLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Nat King Cole Generation Hope, Inc. created a four year college scholarship in 2014 for a deserving student to further his or her education in music. This year’s recipient JonPaul Nesheiwat, known as ‘JP’, volunteered nine hundred hours in high school. He volunteered as a camp counselor, helped foster the love of music in young children and is involved in several charities and has

assisted in building resources for US troops overseas. He was also a school ambassador and a member of the honor music program. He continues to perform for charity groups, church fundraisers and therapeutically for seniors. His says internal peace and joy come from his ability to use his talent for others. JonPaul will be attending Lynn University in the fall. His goal is to major in music therapy and teach music.

NKCGH Staff Nathalie Glaze and Shanna St John, 2016 Scholarship Recipient JonPaul Nesheiwat and NKCGH Board Member Nancy Over.

Scholars are asked to write and submit an essay for consideration along with their application. Please enjoy an excerpt of JonPaul’s: “Nat King Cole and his wife Maria seemed to have a strong relationship that endured and they raised their children together through tough times. They seemed to have a spiritual relationship and I am inspired by the love they shared and also their community spirit. It is fitting that L-O-V-E was his final recording because it seems to embody everything that he and his wife tried to give to their family and the world. After learning more about these inspiring people, I would like to follow some examples that they have set. Nat’s creative spirit for trying new things, despite obstacles, and his peaceful ways are inspiring. The way they stayed together and shared their love is inspiring too,” JonPaul Nesheiwat.
