Back when I was in the 8th grade, a few of my friends invited me to join at an

audition for a show at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. Despite having very littlesinging, and almost zero dancing experience, I thought this sounded like a good idea.During the audition, I managed to fall flat on my face on the third step of the dancecombination, which made such a loud bang when I hit the stage floor that the directorialteam jumped and gasped. For some reason, they still decided to cast me in the show, andit was during this production that I absolutely fell in love with everything theatre. Assomeone who grew up playing sports and finding musicals a little silly, it was quite ashock to the system to enjoy rehearsing, dancing, and performing as much as I did. Thatshow was Footloose The Musical. This show has held a very special place in my heart eversince, as it quite literally changed my life, and I am over the moon with exuberancethat I get to return to this show and share it with the world once again. Over the past several months as we prepared, rehearsed, and explored the insand outs of Footloose, I have never stopped discovering new and deeper facets to thecharacters and story. This isn’t just a story about dancing; it is about how we dealwith all those aspects in our lives that are out of our control, how we mourn and healafter great loss, and how we attempt to cope with tragedy. It is unfortunate howrelevant these themes are in our every day lives. As the actors dove into thecomplexities of their roles, I saw each of them uncover a heightened level ofunderstanding and empathy. In the middle of the iconic pop and rock songs that have cometo define the mid-1980s are some very real people deal with issues, which almosteveryone has but no one can comprehend. How do we fill the holes in our lives aftergreat loss? In his foreword to the script, playwright Dean Pitchford says “the majorcharacters in Footloose have one trait in common: they are all survivors.” Over thecourse of the performance, you will see characters of various ages and life experiencestrying to handle their losses and protect what is important to them. That is not to say this isn’t a joyous show. We also see the important powerof song and dance. The human soul has an undeniable need to express itself. I firmlybelieve this is why musicals aren’t so silly after all, despite what the pre-14-year-oldme would have told you. Sometimes regular words fail to properly express the intricateworkings of our minds and souls and we need to use our whole bodies to help share themwith the world. When people are denied a chance to express themselves in a healthyfashion, we sometimes lose important parts of our lives after bundling up these emotionsand repressing our true feelings. It has been a joy to see the growth in these young performers since we startedrehearsing in May. In my short three years as a professional theatre artist, I canhonestly say this is my proudest work as a director, and that comes out of the work weas a whole cast have achieved. The challenges handed out by this script would throw manyseasoned actors for a loop, and these teens have stepped up to the plate to find thenuances inside their characters. Every character has suffered in some way, and even forthose who have relatable life experience, suffering is not something easily dealt withon stage. As our process progressed, everyone became more comfortable with not hidingfrom the reality of the situation in each scene, and for that, I commend each one ofthem. I would like to once more thank everyone involved in this process, both on-stage and behind the scenes. Making musicals of this scale happen is no small task, andit is heartwarming to see the love for the arts and the dedication to excellence in thiscommunity. I would also like to thank all of you for coming out to support these teens.I hope you are all ready to laugh, cry, and, most importantly, to cut footloose! Dan Pelletier, Director
