Issue No. 8 / 17 31 August 2017 What a trip! 44 students and 7 accompanying adults travelled close to 6000km by plane, coach and foot. Departing Perth airport at 5:30am on Saturday, 12 August, the group returned home at 8:00pm a week later on the 19 August. The trip started with two days in Sydney allowing the students to experience such iconic Australian locations as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Taronga Park Zoo. The group then transferred to our nation’s capital, Canberra. Visits to the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the High Court, the Australian Museum, the Australian Electoral Commission, the National Gallery, Questacon, the CSIRO Discovery Centre and the Australian Institute of Sport provided an abundance of educational and cultural enrichment for the travelling students. The excursion finished with a day skiing in the Perisher Valley. Thank you to Mrs Reiter, Mrs Senn, Mr York and Mr Sivwright for their support and patience throughout the trip. A special thank you to both, Miss Gallimore and Mrs Bolt for their time and leadership on the excursion. This excursion was made possible by the support of the PACER programme, which encourages onsite learning about the nation’s democratic, historical and cultural institutions. The PACER programme offers financial support for students in the form of a $260 rebate. Our school would also like to thank local MP Mr Rick Wilson for his time during our visit to Parliament House. School Photos are happening again on Monday and Tuesday 11 and 12 September. Your child should have already received their Fotoworks envelopes by now. If not please ask your child to come to the Student Services window to collect one. Please ensure that Student Names are written on the envelopes. Fotoworks are now offering online ordering this year. Instructions are on the envelopes. All you have to do is log on to the Fotoworks website and enter your “Shoot Key” (which is on the envelope). Student names will appear on the website once you enter your shoot key. If you don’t have a “Shoot Key” then please contact Jo Steel at the NASHS office on 9892 0611 to receive one.

SCHOOL PHOTOS In the past month NASHS has had numerous National Sporting Representatives. Continuing on from her excellent School and State Cross Country results, Molly Bowles (Year 9) competed in the National Schools Cross Country Championships in Hobart. Danica and Emily Wiggins (Year 10 and 8 respectively) are currently competing in the National Cycling Championship which are also being held in Tasmania. Finally, Oliver Richardson (Year 10) represented WA at the Australian Bodyboard Titles which were held in Tweed Heads, NSW.

ATTENDANCE AND SICKNESS

Parents are reminded that all students who are absent from school for more than three consecutive days require a medical certificate explaining the absence. It is important that parents ask their Doctors for the certificate as by producing a certificate students can receive extensions to assignment deadlines, modified programs and other support from the School. (Mr Harrison—Student Services Coordinator)

PLANNED ABSENCES

If students will be away from school on a planned absence it is important that the school is notified before hand. (Mr Harrison—Student Services Coordinator)

CHANGES TO MINIMUM AGE FOR WHOLE BLOOD DONATIONS

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service advises that, from 14 January 2018, the minimum age for whole blood donations will increase from 16 to 18 years of age. Enquiries: Australian Red Cross Blood Service 13 14 95

STUDENT SAFETY

Congestion in NASHS Car Park Parents who collect their children at the end of the school day will know that Anson Road and NASHS car park becomes very congested. The combination of cars, students on bikes, students walking along Anson Road and school buses means we all have a responsibility to take great care. Thank you to everyone for looking out for the safety of our students.

Usually by about 3.15pm the school car park and Anson Road is free flowing. Parents who do not need to pick up their child right at the end of the school day, are asked to please consider arriving about 3.15pm. This will help to decrease the congestion between 3.00pm and 3.15pm.

ICAS MATHEMATICS

On the 15 August a group of students jumped out of their comfort zone and into the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) maths test. ICAS is a comprehensive testing program addressing higher order thinking and problem solving skills rather than just recall of the curriculum. ICAS has been running for more than 30 years and over one million students entries are accepted from over 6300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition students from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA participate in ICAS each year. Congratulations to the following students for being involved in the ICAS testing. Results will be available later in the year. These students truly embrace the school value of “Be your Best”. PATHWAY TO STEM PROJECT

Professor Taggart and Helen Doherty visited from Murdoch University recently to meet the Year 12 students involved with the Pathway to STEM project. Kylie Offer has been facilitating a program to encourage NASHS students to pursue higher mathematics leading to STEM careers. This has included online tutoring and access to revision courses at Murdoch University in the school holidays. We wish all these students the best for their upcoming ATAR exams and future endeavours.

August has been particularly busy in the Library. We have trialled using some space for performances and were delighted with the response. Shantay and Sheyann Tidswell, who perform under the stage name Kyanga Wadjims (Sweet Waters Sisters), Eden MacQueen and Mr Darian LePage, all entertained a large and enthusiastic crowd. We hope to have a repeat performance in Term Four.

Book Week is always popular and this year’s theme “Escape to Everywhere” was wonderfully represented by our very own TARDIS. Ms Hannah Curtis produced great posters promoting the Book Week Parade, which was enthusiastically embraced by students from Years 7 to 12, and by many staff members. Book vouchers and canteen vouchers were given as prizes and $257.10 was raised for Daffodil Day from all those who chose to dress up. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to making the day such a success.

The NASHS Chess Team travelled to Mount Barker on the last Friday of August to participate in the Regional Chess Tournament. We came second in the tournament behind Mount Barker with some great individual performances, especially from our three top ranked players Stacey Smith, Blake Childs and Falen Robinson. All team members, old and new, demonstrated the NASHS school values admirably, and we have a strong foundation to build on for next year. Well done to all involved. THE ALBANY BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION 2017-2018 season is fast approaching. Now is a good time to start discussing and organising your teams for the new season.

Registration nights will be held on Tuesday, 12 September and Thursday, 14 September from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre (ALAC). More information is available on the ABA website.

Fees for the 2017—2018 season will be: Juniors $115 Seniors $145

Team court costs will be $450 (15 weeks) for juniors and $480 (16 weeks) for A grade men and women.

If a player is looking for a team for the 2017-2018 season and cannot find one, the ABA has a ABA wanted face book page where others players in the same situation can advertise or teams looking for players may advertise. This season the ABA has decided to trial a Year 4 competition on Saturday mornings from 10.30am. BRING FRENCH, ITALIAN OR SPANISH CULTURE TO LIFE ! Why not volunteer to host an international student from France, Italy or Spain next year? We have a small group of delightful students coming to Australia for 11 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All the international students are around 15 or 16 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses, and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term cultural immersion stay. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream. TARA’S DREAM WORK PLACEMENT

Hello, I am Tara Stewart, in Year 12 and completing my Work Placement at Terry White Chemmart in Bayonet Head on Tuesdays. This place is the best work place ever because I get to work in retail with beauty products.

When I first arrived at the chemist I didn’t know what was going on and I didn’t know anyone there except for my NASHS support person, Janet. My supervisor at the time, Holly, greeted me and introduced me to everyone and was welcomed in with open arms and happy smiles. Holly gave me two badges one with my name on it and trainee on the other one.

The tasks I do are: price ticketing, putting stock out, pulling stock to the front of the shelf, planograms, dusting, using a scanning gun, bin run, checking products for their expiry dates, putting pamphlets in bags and taking price tickets off the shelf.

There are no low points at the chemist and I have been having a great time and enjoying it as well as making lots of new friends. Plus I might get a part time job there after I finish school this year.
