EDITORIAL (Vince Crowley Editor) A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. “What food might this contain?” the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The pig sympathized, but said “I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.” The mouse turned to the cow and said “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The cow said “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.” So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house – like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbours came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many! people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember: when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life.So what does the mouse story have to do with Nashos. It is exactly the situation we find ourselves in with the Heritage Precinct at Wacol. Members are questioning why we are spending money on Wacol and offer reasons why they are not supporting the improvements e.g.

• I didn’t do my National Service at Wacol; • I was in the Navy/Air Force; • It is too far to travel; • We were not consulted.

Since 2005, when we were first offered the lease by the Commonwealth, every action regarding the lease of Wacol has been approved by ELIGIBLE MEMBERS at General Meetings. The museum has memorabilia of the three services, the flags of the three services are laid up in the Chapel. When I attended my first State Meeting in 2012 - Kyle MacLeod gave me a folder with past minutes and summary of major issues. I asked two questions at my first meeting and that got me branded as one of ‘THEM’. ‘THEM’ got elected as the SMC in 2013 and have been elected every year since. Unfortunately, the ‘US’ and ‘THEM’ is starting to raise its head and I have spoken on this issue at previous meetings. Dave Burgess gave me a copy of a toast they use at Brisbane North. At our Nasho Day dinner I had a piper play the tune it is used with “We are One”, We sang it with pride as part of the toast to National Servicemen.Maybe it is timely to sing it before all our meetings. We are One, But we are many. And from all Australia we come. We share our dream…. We sing with one voiceStand Tall, be Proud. The National Servicemen, Stand Tall, be Proud, The National Servicemen. Remember, the members of SMC were appointed to MANAGE the affairs of the Association

VALE - COLIN WALLACE BELL10 May 1940 to 14 April 2020 – Aged 79By John Hardy OAM, NSAA State Media Officer.

Our former Queensland State Association President Colin Wallace Bell will be remembered as being a visionary leader and left behind many legacies, none greater than the Wacol Heritage Precinctand Precinct and in association with Dales Whyte the Pipes and Drums National Servicemen’s Memorial Band. A Glengarry bonnet even adorned Colin’s coffin. He died on 14 April 2020 aged 79 in a Sunshine Coast hospital after complications from a leg operation. Colin was born in Brisbane on 7 May 1940 and educated at the Wooloowin State School and Coorparoo State High School. He began studies at University of Queensland where his special interest in computerisation held him in good stead for his future including the National Servicemen’s Association. As an 18 year old, Colin was called up to serve with the Australian Army in the 1st Intake 1959 to complete his obligation with 11 National Service Training Battalion at Wacol. He served there from 9 January 1959 to 26 March 1959. He then transferred to the CMF’s Queensland University Regiment and served from 27 March 1959 to 30 June 1960. This military experience made a life-long impression and ensured that the welfare needs of his fellow Nashos and other veterans were addressed by various means. At one stage he fulfilled the role as President of Pine Rivers Branch. He never did anything by half-measures and his interest in the National Servicemen’s Association commenced in the early 1990’s when its establishment was gaining momentum. An example is that Colin of Kallangur was thanked by the President at the time for his support to the Association for supplying the marquee, barbeques, tables and chairs for the 1996 Christmas break-up and also donating a computer for the New Farm office. In the following year, Colin became the Association Membership Officer. One of his legacies that still remains today is that we still use the Access database program developed by him and improved over the years to keep track of all of our members spread across Australia. In early 1998, Col replaced Ray Spring as Association Vice President and at the same time held the same position with the Norman Park based National Service RSL Sub Branch. Colin stepped up on 23 August 1998 and was elected State President, a position that he held until 28 March 2009. During these 10 years, he put the Association on a sound footing after inheriting administrative and financial problems. Evidence of this is that at the 2005 September AGM he stated “During the eight years as President that the Association is alive and strong and continues to grow. This year is no exception. We have now achieved results that we could only dream about eight years ago”.It was during his reign, he also held the role as National Vice President and oversaw the development of the Association and the interaction between State Branches. Some of his achievements include but are not restricted to the following:• Wacol Heritage Precinct – Colin set out to fund and build the Heritage Precinct,

an area where he trained in 1959. Back in 1998, he started lobbying the Federal Government to provide the Association with land and buildings at the Wacol Army Camp where the Association could record and preserve the history of National Service. After years of negotiations his dream become a reality on 8 July 2005 when The Hon. Teresa Gambaro MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence officially inaugurated the National Service Heritage Precinct. Colin went on to organise for the restoration of the buildings and a museum to house Navy, Army, and Air Force exhibits. An Army Cadet unit occupied the area for a period and the Papua New Guinea Volunteer Rifles have also established a significant museum.

• Association HQ – In early 2002, Colin’s entrepreneurial spirit saw the State Management Committee secure its own headquarters at the Eric Sivell Park, Boundary Road, Camp Hill. The building, leased from the Brisbane City Council, has since been extensively renovated and houses the SMC Honour Board. It was officially opened on National Servicemen’s Day, 2003 when Colin took the salute at the parade. John Brosnan as State Secretary and his wife Noela ably supported Colin for seven of these years.

• State Conferences – These are held annually across the State and Colin oversaw the organising these across the eastern seaboard of Queensland. From Townsville in the north to the Gold Coast in the south and west to Toowoomba and Kingaroy, members enjoyed the social interaction associated with BBQ’s, dinners, parades, church services and formal meetings.

• Association Anniversaries – Colin organised significant Association anniversaries including overseas, across the State as well as interstate. The coordination of celebrations for the 50-year anniversary of National Service at the Gold Coast in 2001 is one notable one. Another is the 20th anniversary conference in Toowoomba held from 17-21 October 2007. Coach tours became part of these commemorations. Even after he stepped down, he would volunteer to organise these coach tours including associated rail and flight connections as well as accommodation.

• Fundraising – Colin was to the fore with developing or designing merchandise including marketing in order to raise funds for the Association. This included badges, stubby coolers, port and conference shirts which are still worn today. The array of empty port bottles are testament to the good time had by all at the various celebrations and reunions.

• National Service Memorials – These can be found across the State from the Atherton Tableland to the Gold Coast Border. Colin gave support to their establishment and ensured that he was present for their opening. One such highlight was taking the salute for the opening of the State Nasho Memorial at East Creek Park, Toowoomba on 24 October 2004.

• Welfare Aspectso Welfare Officers – Colin encouraged for Branches to have their own Welfare Officers and that they be trained to the DVA standards. Further, he met with the politicians and the Department on many occasions and further through his involvement with the National Service RSL Sub Branch, he sought recognition and support for Nashos and gave encouragement and staff to assist personnel with service related medical conditions in applying for DVA pensions, military compensation and benefits. o Chaplains – He ensured that Branches also appointed Chaplains and a range of Preaching Scarves and Prayer Stoles were designed and made available to the relevant officers. A position of State Chaplain was created to oversee all of the ones at Branch level.o Emergency Relief Fund – Following the devastation to the coastal areas of FNQ by Cyclone Larry on 20 March 2006, Colin quickly organised for dozen petrol generators to be despatched to the Innisfail / Tully / Babinda area. This led in due course for a State National Service Emergency Relief Fund to be set up and approved on 31 March 2007. A National Relief Fund followed in due course in 2011. o Funeral Plan – in 2005, Colin negotiated to have a Funeral Fund established with Sureplan Friendly Society. This ensured that Nashos were able to plan ahead for their death. The NSAA also adopted a standard funeral service. o Retirement Village – A large developer wished to enter into an arrangement with us on a land and buildings package. The partnership with us could give the developer access to assured customers in our ranks and we in turn could gain benefits as an Association. For various reasons, the plan never came to fruition.

• Service and Association Medals – At the National and State levels, Colin lobbied politicians for many years to ensure that Nashos were given official government recognition with the awarding of an official medal. This came to fruition on 10 October 2001 when the Federal Government announced that the Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972 Medal was to recognise those who completed their obligation under the two National Service schemes that had operated in Australia between 1951 and 1972. Colin was also involved with the design of the Association medal before the release of the official medal.

• Membership – Following the awarding of the Government official medal in 2001, attention was drawn to our Association and membership increased significantly. In order to control this, Colin appointed Development Officers Joe Petersen and Alex Garlin to undertake this role. Under his leadership, Colin saw our Association Branches grow to 37 including interstate ones at Coffs Harbour and the Northern Territory.

• Honorary Member Carol Bell – When Colin became President of the National Servicemen’s Association in Queensland in 1998, Carol provided complete support and worked extensively to assist in expanding the membership and improving services to all Nashos throughout the State. When Colin travelled across the State, where possible, she would accompany him when visiting the various Branches. Carol was presented in 2003 with an Association Honorary Membership for the dedication and support that she provided. Carol was a sharing person who cared about others and enriched the life of those who came into contact with her. Carol passed away on 14 November 2008 aged 66. In further recognition of her achievements, Membership Officer and family friend Ray Lower recommended that an honour board named the ‘Carol Bell Memorial Board’ for Honorary Members be instituted. It was good recognition of their service and is now displayed at the Camp Hill

headquarters. Ray donated it and wife Hazel presented it to the Association at the Kingaroy Conference Dinner on 9 September 2009. Janet Josey’s name, Carol’s sister, compliments Carol name on the board which now boasts 13 names ladies. Colin was presented with an Association Life Membership in 2001.

Queensland RSL – When Colin stepped down from the Association on 28 March 2009, he redirected his interests to the RSL having previously joined the League in 1997. He had held positions on Sub Branch committees since that date. At the Sub Branch level until his passing, Colin was a member of the Orchid Beach/Fraser Island Sub Branch where he held at various times the position of Membership Officer (2013 to 2020), Secretary, Treasurer and Sub Branch Delegate. Further at the District level, Colin held the very busy role of Wide Bay and Burnett District Treasurer (2014 to 2020). Not content with that workload, he was a Director of the Advocacy Training and Development Program (ATDP) Communities of Practice Board. His passing will leave them with positions that will be difficult to fill.Colin’s family were his late first wife, Carol; his second wife, Cindy; and Dad to Rob and Lynda, Debbie and Rick, Karen and Robert and Stephen and Simone. His 9 grandchildren include Caitlyn, Jessica, Brock, Reid, Aiden, Ryan, Zac, Amelia and Eloise. His brothers are Keith and Douglas Bell and sister Vivianne Jones. The Coronavirus lockdown only allowed for 20 people to attend his funeral held at Metropolitan Funerals Chapel, Kippa-Ring followed by internment at the Redcliffe cemetery. However, many National Servicemen’s Association members across the State were able to watch Live Streaming of the service conducted by Sate Padre Tom Andrews OAM.

Colin will be remembered for the love of his family, travel, Frazer Island fishing and culinary skills. Further at the Association level and State President, he was someone to look up to as a willing organiser and as a friend who always had the welfare of veterans particularly National Servicemen to the fore. RIP

STATE PRESIDENT’S REPORT (Alex Garlin) The Annual General Meeting of the Association scheduled for the 21st of March 2020 was postponed on the direction of the Management Committee due to the state of the COVID-19 Virus. After much talk with the management committee we have decided that if the virus epidemic has subsided, we are planning to hold the meetings in the September conference. We will inform you in due course. Nominations for the executive have been called and by the closing date have been returned unopposed. The position of Vice President has been filled following a postal ballot. Congratulations are conveyed to Tony Stevenson. I would like to thank Mark Cash for his interest in the position of Vice-President. The financial books of the Association have been Audited by our nominated Auditor, but of course have not been presented to our members at an AGM.Proxy Voting forms sent by Branch Members have been sealed and put under a locked environment. This is a summary of the position of our Association as at this date. I await guidance from the Office of Fair Trading. As I write this, I can report that our members appear to have been spared the ravages of the COVID-19 Virus and we quietly pray that our members and their loved ones are kept safe. A number of Federal and State Politicians have been written to by our State Secretary seeking further financial support to complete the restoration of the establishment at Wacol. It should be noted by those members who do not support the improvements at Wacol that our secretary and I did not do their training at this establishment but whole heartedly support and work for our Wacol legacy. In the absence of not having a Wellbeing Officer, Tony and I will continue to visit the Brisbane Listed Hospitals for our members on the recovery list.I ask members not to forget the Nominal Roll as it records our service. Until next time keep well and keep safe. Alex Garlin

TREASURER’S REPORT (Neal Freier) Our financial report has been completed for the year 2019 and the various accounts reconciled. All was placed in the hands of our Auditor who has done an excellent job again. I must pay tribute to our auditor. On the 14th. January I was admitted to hospital with a broken hip and a torn rotator cuff. I spent 7 weeks in hospital. During this time when the Auditor found out, she visited me in hospital and also offered to have a staff member go to our headquarters to assist us and take all our records etc. to her office for auditing. At that stage our AGM was proceeding on the 21st.

March and I was concerned that if I didn’t get all our records etc to the auditor, then the auditor’s report might not be completed in time. But true to form she had it done on time and did another excellent job.The AGM has been postponed because of the coronavirus situation and the audited financial report is held safely until we finally are able to hold our AGM. Suffice to say our finances are in good shape and I am happy with the situation.

Now some happy news for some of our smaller branches. At a recent executive meeting our new Vice President, Tony Stevenson didn’t waste any time in his new job. He suggested that we financially support those branches with less than $5,000 in their bank accounts by giving $2,000 to each of those branches. This was totally supported by the executive. I am presently examining all branch annual financial reports to see who is entitled to receive this money. The money will come from our Welfare account and should be banked in the branch welfare account. It is to be used for the wellbeing of branch members and has to be acquitted to us in 12 months time. The sad news is the announcement that Colin Bell passed away on the evening of 14th April and has gone to that “great parade ground in the sky”. Colin was our longest serving President and remained there for in excess of 10 years. It was Colin who coerced me into becoming State Treasurer many years ago and trained me to use a computer. Any time I had a problem with MYOB. I just rang Colin and he would sort it out for me. Colin was the most innovated President I have known. He was responsible for the formation of our Nasho Pipe Band (the only one in Australia) and he was responsible for us getting the Wacol Precinct. In many ways he was our patriarch Vale Colin Wallace Bell R.I.P.Well that’s it for this edition. I hope you all keep in good health and are happy.CheersNeal Freier

THE PADRE’S CORNER.G’DAY EVERYONE. Greetings to you all and as I write this article I hope that everyone is coping with how things are in our world today. It is unbelievable and nobody has ever seen anything like what has swept across the nations of the whole world with the coronavirus. I read the other day that the only continent that is not affected is Antarctica. My prayers and thoughts are with you all regularly, as a group, and personally for those whom I know real well. Please stay safe and do what we are supposed to do. Some of you, on my email address list, would have received my stories of four miracles that occurred in the Andrews family early in April. It was amazing and brought an old hymn to my thoughts. It says, “God is still on the throne, And He will remember His own, Though trials may press us and burdens distress us, He never will leave us alone.” This was proved in four ways and if anyone wants my “Miracles Story” ask with an email to me.

This Article made me Stop and Think how SAD and GREEDY the WORLD has BECOME.“I talked to a man today, an 80 + year old man (probably a Nasho). I asked him if there was anything I can get him while this coronavirus is gripping Australia”. He simply smiled, looked away and smiled:“Let me tell you what I need! I need to believe, at some point, This country my generation fought for....I need to believe this nation we handed safely to our children and their children....I need to know that this generation will quit being a bunch of sissies....that they respect what they’ve been given....that they’ve earned what others sacrificed for.” I wasn’t sure where this conversation was going or if it was going anywhere at all. So, I sat there, quietly observing. You know, I was a little boy during World War 2 . Those were scary days. We didn’t know if we were going to be speaking English, German or Japanese at the end of the war. There was no guarantees like Australians enjoy today and there was no home that went without sacrifice or loss. Every house, up and down every street, had someone in harm’s way. Maybe their Daddy was a soldier, maybe their son was a sailor and maybe it was an uncle. Sometimes it was the whole damn family....fathers, sons, daughters, uncles.... Having someone, you love, sent off to war....it wasn’t less frightening that it is today. It was as scary as Hell. If anything, it was more frightening. We didn’t have battle front news. We didn’t have email or mobile phones. You sent them away and hoped....you prayed. You may not hear from them for months, if ever. Sometimes a mother was getting her son’s letters the same day Dad was comforting her over their child’s death. Also we at home sacrificed. You couldn’t buy things. Everything was rationed. You were only allowed so much milk per month, only so much bread and toilet paper. EVERYTHING was restricted for the war effort. And what you weren’t using, what you didn’t need, things you threw away, they were saved and sorted for the war effort. My generation was the original recycling movement in Australia. And we had viruses back then....serious viruses. Things like polio, measles and such. It was nothing to walk to school and pass a house or two or three that was quarantined. We didn’t shut down our School. We didn’t shut down our cities. We carried on, without masks, without hand sanitizer. And do you know What? We persevered. We overcame. We didn’t attack our Government, we came together. We rallied around the flag for the war. Thick or thin, we were in it to win and we would lose more boys in an hour of combat than we lose in entire wars today.Maybe I saw a small tear in the corner of his eye and then he continued:Today’s kids don’t know sacrifice. They think a sacrifice is not having coverage on their phone while they freely drive across the country. A lot of today’s kids are selfish and spoiled. In my generation, we looked out for our elders and we helped out the single mums whose husbands were either at war or dead from war. Today’s kids rush the store, buying everything they can....no concern for anyone but themselves. It’s shameful the way many Australians behave these days. None of them deserve the sacrifices their granddads made. So, no I don’t need anything. I appreciate your offer but, I know I’ve been through worse things than this virus. But, maybe I should be asking you, ‘what can I do to help you? Do you have enough soft drink to get you through this, enough steak? Will you be able to survive with 60 channels on your TV’?”

I smiled , fighting back a tear of my own....now humbled by a man in his 80’s. All I could do was thank him for the history lesson, leave my number for emergency and leave with my ego firmly tucked in my rear. I talked to a man today. A REAL man. An AUSTRALIAN man (probably a NASHO) from an era long gone and forgotten. We will never understand the sacrifices. We will never fully earn their sacrifices BUT we should work harder to learn about them. Learn from them....to respect them.

With the cancelling of every Anzac Services I am sure we have done something in our own way –

BAYSIDE: (Meeting 1st Tuesday of each month at 1030 hrs at Wynnum RSL, Tingal Road, Wynnum. Meetings however are currently cancelled until further notice.)Bayside have reluctantly cancelled the monthly meetings until CONVID-19 is under control and restrictions are lifted. This is also including badge selling and Anzac Day Services. We are all missing each other and to ease the pain we are putting out a weekly newsletter instead of the two-bimonthly Bayside Bulletin. Our members all are contributing to the content by emailing in what is happening to them, how they are coping with the isolation, photos of events organised, what is working for them and many many jokes etc. Our members are really inventive and it seems we won’t lose the plot while in isolation! Can’t wait for this all to end and everything is back to normal. At our AGM all offices were filled and Maurie Friend is again our President and Pat Dunne Secretary/Treasurer as in 2019. Even with the current crisis we know Bayside will remain strong and dedicated. All planned activities are on hold. However, a bright spot happened when our very own Pat Dunne from the Wynnum Scout Group who was the 2020 recipient of Wynnum Scope Club’s Australia Day 2020 Volunteer Award with a citation of “For Service to the Local Community”. We are very proud of Pat who served in Vietnam in 1970-71 with 21st Engineer Support Troop RAE. He does a tremendous amount of work for Bayside Branch and the Nashos generally. The award was also given for Pat’s work for the Boy Scout Movement over a long period of time. His service is legendary. Bayside are hoping that all Nashos remain well and safe. Our thoughts are with all branches. Branch contact: Secretary Pat Dunne 07 3396.BEAUDESERT: (Meetings 1st Monday of even months 1030hrs. Venue: Beaudesert RSL Function Room)We held our 17th AGM on Monday 3rd February. Our previous committee were all re-elected for 2020. The meeting was followed by a luncheon in the RSL Club Function Room where President Phil Johns presented our Patron Cr Michael Enright (photo) with a certificate of appreciation to the Scenic Rim Regional Council for their support in 2019. We managed to have our morning tea in the park on 3rd March before we were all confined to home by CORVID-19 which has put all our planned activities on hold for the time being. Our President Phil Johns and V/P John Doyle presented Matt Enright (photo)

who is leaving for W.A. with a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ for his voluntary work in updating our Honour Boards over many years. Our members were saddened to hear of the death of Colin Bell who was State President when our Branch was formed in January 2003. We are trying to keep up with all our members by phone and email to keep them informed of events and checking on their wellbeing. We hope that all other branches are coping.

BEENLEIGH-LOGAN: (Meeting: 4th Monday each month (Feb to Dec) at 1000hrs. Venue: Beenleigh RSL).Branch correspondent Tom Shields indicates that they have no news to report. Like all others we have had to cancel outing, meetings and badge selling. Our branch would like to extend our best to all other members also doing it in isolation. This lockdown is a necessary measure to keep us older folk away from this horrid virus originating from China. Happy days ahead. Branch Contact: Secretary - Ph: 07 3200 3517.BRIBIE ISLAND: (Meeting: 1st Tuesday each month at 1130 hours. Venue: 25 Boronia Drive, Bellara). The Bribie Island Branch of the Nashos started 2020 with its first meeting and luncheon on 4 February which was held at the home of our Vice-President, Elizabeth Schilling. After our meeting, approximately 25 members and supporters enjoyed a delightful lunch of chicken, ham and various salads followed by a feast of beautiful (low calorie!!) deserts provided by the lovely ladies. Following consultation with all, a schedule of planned events for the year was distributed and we all were looking forward to a busy time ahead. Little did we know!! On 3 March, we held our AGM and reluctantly accepted the resignation of our President Roy Nicholas who had served in that position for 5 years and performed the duties admirably. Our Assistant Secretary Lyn O’Meara also resigned at this time. Elections were held and the following office-bearers were elected – President John Price, Vice-President Elizabeth Schilling, Treasurer Peter Doolan, and Secretary Noel Stewart. Presentations were made to Past President Roy Nicholas and his wife Rose and Lyn in appreciation of their support of the Bribie Island Branch. We were pleased to welcome several new members and supporters at this meeting as a result of an excellent job of recruiting continuing to be performed by Keith Taylor. A widow’s badge was presented to Freda Cooney and we were pleased to see her attend. The photo shows Roy and Rose and Lyn following the presentations. Our first outing for 2020 was a day trip by coach to Mooloolaba where we boarded a lovely cruise ship and departed for a 2 hour cruise around the local canals and river whilst enjoying a delicious lunch and various liquid refreshments. Thanks to Captain Tony and crew for their excellent service and knowledge of the local area. Of course all events, meetings, etc., are on hold until it is safe for us to meet again. President John Price is keeping in touch with all members via mail, email and phone. Birthday cards for all members will be posted during the next few months until we can meet and have our usual cake cutting ceremony at our regular luncheons/meetings. Welcome home Vice-President Elizabeth Schilling from a prolonged stay in hospital; we wish you a speedy recovery. Many members paused in their driveways for Anzac Day remembrance. This was a different experience to our usual way of proudly marching and attending services. Lest We Forget. We wish good health to all members, supporters and their families and we look forward to meeting together in the not too distant future. Branch contact – President John Price – 0439 287 747.BRISBANE NORTH: (Meeting: 1st Sunday each month 1000 hours. Venue: Kedron Wavell Services Club). This is a report when we have little to report. The committee did the traditional “phone around” meeting to keep the communication channels open. No Anzac Day marches, no memorabilia sales, no catching up with our regulars and no chit chat about old times. Sad. However there were some positives. Many people stood outside their residents, radio turned up loud, to listen to the Dawn of Life service. At my retirement village 12 residents joined in the service, from a distance, and enjoyed a coffee and Anzac biscuit after the service. In Northgate, the Last Post echoed down the street to around 60 people by a young bugler. No doubt a familiar event in other areas. Anzac Day was not forgotten. We had a request from Suncrest Gardens at Taigum, for some poppies. President Dave and Earle Jennings organised a delivery. A lovely letter showed the appreciation of those residents. Anzac Day was not forgotten. Barry Loose is back in hospital at the time of writing and Denise has also been in hospital. Our thoughts are with you both. With restriction on the brink of some relaxation we look forward to getting back to our friends and family and getting back to our good old Nasho days. In the meantime keep safe and obey the rules. Branch Contact: Secretary Trevor Koks 07 3261 2688. Further info Brian Nichols 0419 717 354.BRISBANE SOUTH: (Meeting: Last Sunday each month 0930 hours. Venue: Runcorn Tavern).Greeting to all members and supporters from a stay at home (like everyone else) Secretary. At our AGM, our Branch Committee was returned unopposed for another year. Thank you to each committee member for their ongoing service to the Branch. Six widows were welcomed by President Tony Stevenson at the Runcorn Tavern to our Widow’s Luncheon held on Wednesday 19th February 2020. It was another great success with thanks again going to our organising ladies. Their late husband’s service to the branch was recognised. With the attendance of some twenty members plus wives. It made for a very enjoyable day. Our Branch has ceased all BMC and monthly meetings and all functions until further notice. Please continue to follow all Government and Health recommendations, stay fit and healthy and keep an eye on friends and colleagues during this time. Any updates on meetings etc. will be announced through our Branch newsletter. Branch contact: Len Ramsay – Branch Secretary – 07 3209 5541.

BUNDABERG: (Meeting: 2nd Saturday of the month 1330 hrs. Venue: Bundaberg RSL Board Room)Brian Trost, our hard working Social Secretary surpassed himself for our February 2020 coach trip. We all headed off to the Buderim Ginger Factory. Whilst our numbers were down a little due to health issues those who attended had wonderful time. This trip also coincided with the rain events that were taking place at the time. Thinking hard once again Social Secretary Brian came up with a unique trip to Noosa in March which also involved a 2 hour Eco Cruise and 20 minute Nature Walk. Once again the diversity of our tour destinations almost ensures a full coach for each trip. Unfortunately this was postponed when the virus appeared!!! The Branch subsidised luncheons are always popular for both Members and Widows who attend. The Branch is temporarily having a close down for the duration of the virus. Branch Contact: Secretary Brian Trost 07 4151 3485.CAIRNS and DISTRICT: (Meetings 2nd Thursday each month at 1030hrs Venue: Upstairs at the Cairns RSL boardroom.)PRESIDENT’S POST: Pat Galwey - At times fate doesn’t give much respite from challenging our belief in life’s fairness, and the sudden and devastating loss of our Supporter member, Agnes Carswell, is a heartfelt blow deeply felt by all of us. We offer Stan and his family our most sincere condolences. Unfortunately COVID-19 will deprive many of us from saying our last farewells personally, but our hearts will be with the family. A private family funeral was held at the Heritage Brady Funeral Chapel on Thursday 9 April. On a positive note it is with great pleasure that

I offer a welcome to our new 2020 committee. Fred Cave sadly, but with many accolades, resigned from his position of President after 16 terms. Our new committee is President, Pat Galwey, Vice President, Russel Hayes, Acting Secretary and Editor, John Wallwork, Treasurer, George Russo and Allan Dean Fundraising Co-Ordinator. Fred Cave, our Immediate Past President, was gracious enough to accept the position of Welfare Officer – a most important role. Thanks to the many members who swelled our ranks at the AGM and SMC Liaison Officer for conducting the election of officer bearers. Unfortunately, the first decision taken

by your committee was to suspend General Meetings from April 2020, until further notice. The decision is in line with mandated government guidelines and needs no further explanation. But all is not lost – your committee will continue to meet remotely on a monthly basis to maintain administrative integrity. All members will be kept up-to-date via our usual monthly newsletter. Many thanks to John Wallwork. As you are no doubt aware all proposed functions, normally attended by the Branch have been suspended as has the State AGM originally scheduled for 21 March at Wacol. This does not preclude any member attending any function either as a representative of the Branch or as a personal gesture. The photo shows FNQ Branch Presidents L to R Tableland- John Hardy, Cairns - Pat Galwey, Innisfail (outgoing) John Wakefield with Shane Knuth MP, Member for Hill. Your committee will endeavour to keep you informed of what is happening in the Association regularly. Trust in God (but don’t forget the soap and water). Branch Contact: President Pat Galwey Ph 07 4045 1667. CORAL COAST BOWEN BRANCH: (Meeting 2nd Sunday each month at 1030hrs at The Rose Room, Cunningham Villas, Tollington Road, Bowen). At your last meeting in March, Cunningham Villas were in lock down because of COVID-19 and while we eventually held our meeting, we were not able to do so until all our temperatures were taken. Fortunately none of our members or supporters were above the limit. We will miss our 3 Anzac Parades on Saturday 25th April. The dawn service is always well attended normally followed by a service at Cunningham Villas for the residents organised by our local Nashos. The third service is held at the cenotaph at 11 a.m. and usually well attended. Of course, our reunion in Bowen at the end of July, where we welcome Nashos and supporters from Townsville, Mackay, Burdekin and Callide, is in doubt at present. We will have to wait and see if we are able to do this get together as we did intend to have it again at the Larrikins Hotel. We are all staying home and heeding the virus rules and advices. So hopefully these conditions will not last too much longer when we can get out and about again. Cheers to all. Branch Contact, Secretary, Edna Sanderson, Ph. 07 4786 1527.

GLADSTONE: (Meeting; 3rd Wednesday of month at 1300hrs: Venue: Rocky Glen Hotel)In light of the current COVID-19 restrictions, we have no submission to this edition of Nasho News. On behalf of Gladstone Nasho’s “keep well and stay safe”. Branch Contact, Val Buchanan 0409 766 141. GOLD COAST NORTH: (Meeting: 2nd Tuesday each even numbered month 0930 hours. Venue: Mudgeeraba Light Horse and National Servicemen’s Precinct, Mudgeeraba Showground.) The AGM is the exception, held third Tuesday in February. As is the case with all social gatherings, Gold Coast North Branch have suspended all activities until further notice. At the time of writing there have been no notification of any member contracting the Coronavirus. The Branch Annual Nasho Commemoration Service, at this time, is in doubt, decision to be made in May, as will the decision on the September, Canberra trip. We hope all keep safe and abide by the rules in place. Best wishes to all. Branch Contacts: Secretary, Roy Payne, 0448 234 036, President Brian Handke, 07 5630 8071.GOLD COAST TWIN TOWNS: (Meeting: Bi Monthly 4th Friday at 1000 hours QLD Time and 11 am NSW Time. Venue: RSL Twin-Towns, Anzac Room, Tweed Heads NSW).Our next General Meetings is on hold as everything is still closed until June at least. Hopefully everyone is well and surviving this monster virus (many haven’t) and hope that we lose it as fast as it came, then we can all get back to “Normal” again. As we were unable to hold our AGM and fortunately it is still the same committee for 2020, we will advise when things are up and running again. If we are lucky enough to make the July meeting, it will be at 10am Friday 31st July 2020. Nothing is certain at this stage also. We will have the Camel Trip again but maybe not until next year as everything has to be clear before we even attempt it. We will have the trip to the “Camel Dairy Farm at Harrisville” again next year still in May on a date to be decided. Just keep positive safe and in good health until it’s all over. Members keep checking with other members to see that they are all well. Branch Contacts: Vice President: Tom Hughes - 07 5513 0665 or Treasurer: Noreen Hughes 0438 447 497.HERVEY BAY: (Meeting: 4th Wednesday every month 1000 hours. Venue: Hervey Bay RSL, 3rd floor.)The world has changed since the last NASHO News. Everyone doing the self-isolation means every Branch would have their Wellbeing Officer very busy; ours is no exception. Since the last edition we have finally filled our Committee positions. President is Brian Barker, Vice-President and Secretary is Ray Duce, Treasurer is Jim Veryard. Our Padre Mr. Derek Lawton has also taken on being our Wellbeing Officer. ANZAC DAY has come and gone and we were unable to sell our Pins and Badges in the usual manner; however we did sell some to both Bunnings Stores at Hervey Bay and Maryborough as bulk items that the staff could buy. Please keep safe and keep an eye on your fellow members, with no meetings going on some members still like to be contacted and not forgotten. Branch Contact President Brian 0467642730 or Secretary Ray 0477799971.INGHAM: (Meeting: 2nd Tuesday of the Month 1800 hrs. Venue: Ingham R.S.L)As expected, due to the world wide virus crisis, little has happened locally involving Nashos as an organisation. Our AGM was not as well attended as per normal due to conditions but a full executive was duly elected. Almost immediately following the AGM Ingham Branch went into shut down. Sadly, this has resulted in a number of events being cancelled including Anzac Day (25 April), Battle of the Coral Sea Remembrance (3 May) held annually in Cardwell and our Nasho Remembrance Day, Plaque Dedication and Blessing plus Dinner (27 June). Hopefully, as the year unfolds, services held towards the end of the year will be back on the agenda. The enclosed photo shows L to R Vice President Franco Pagliuso presenting Joe Cervellin his OBE .mrdalion. The background is [and will become a treasured item], a Commemorative Anzac Day Tapestry. There will now be a gap of almost 5 years until a nasho recipient will be eligible for an OBE. The message for the moment is STAY SAFE. Branch contact: Secretary Maurie Filei. Phone 07 4776 1752. INNISFAIL BABINDA TULLY: (Meeting: 4th Tuesday each month 1800hrs. Venue Innisfail RSL).This year’s National Servicemen’s Day was held indoors at the Innisfail RSL instead of at the memorial in King George Park because of an extreme heatwave. Ninety people attended including Shane Knuth MP, Member for Hill whose father was a Nasho. We enjoyed the camaraderie over dinner after the short ceremony conducted by John Wakefield. Several Cairns and Tableland members joined us for our commemoration. Two new memorial plaques were displayed and the families joined in the ceremony. These were attached to the memorial recently in time for Anzac Day. The group photo shows the members in attendance. On the previous Sunday, six members attended the Tableland National Servicemen’s Day which was held at Tolga Museum where a Private Joe Ramsay Memorial Vietnam Collection was opened.

A church service followed at the Salvation Army church opposite, followed by lunch. At the AGM on 25 February, a new president was elected to replace John Wakefield. David Grima, a 1965-72 Nasho undertook his Basic Training at Singleton NSW and was then posted to the Engineers Corps at SME Casula NSW then posted back to near home with 18 Fld Sqn RAE Townsville. No change to Secretary and Treasurer positions. Just prior to the social isolation lockdown, 27 members attended the business launch of this year’s Red Shield Appeal for Salvation Army. The venue was Peppertree Restaurant, which is the training restaurant for Innisfail State College students. Students prepared and served the meal and it was a credit to them. Since then all social events, sporting events and meetings have had to be cancelled. It’s been an unusual Anzac Day without the usual Dawn Service, Gunfire Breakfast and marches both in Innisfail and Babinda, but interesting nonetheless. Gwen Hammerton from Salvation Army did a drive-by with a bugler in attendance to half a dozen homes of Nashos and held small ceremonies at each driveway. Earlier lots of people held their own candlelit dawn moment in their driveways then Rob and Margaret Saunders erected the flags at the memorial and put poppies on the plaques. Dave Grima and Charlie Catalano also quietly laid a wreath on behalf of Nashos at the cenotaph, to join a couple of other wreaths people had earlier laid. No hassles from police as we had earlier let them know what we were doing. The executive and committee have kept in touch with members, checking on how they are coping with the strict social isolation measures. Nashos, being a tough lot, are coping admirably. Keep up the fight and we will come out of this well. Branch Contact: Secretary, Margaret Saunders 0428 612 770. PINE RIVERS BRANCH: (Meeting: 3rd Wednesday each month at 0930 hours start. Venue: Pine Rivers RSL William Able Centre, Kallangur). The Pine Rivers Branch are deeply saddened by the death of our member and past President Colin Bell. Colin became President and supported and guided the members when the branch was receiving a lot unjust and unfair treatment from officers of the parent body . He is fondly remembered by the membership at the Branch. May he rest in peace. Meetings suspended until further notice. Branch Contact - Len Matthews 0732058674.REDLANDS: (Meeting: 1st Sunday each month 0945 for 1000 hours start. Venue: Gallipoli Room, Redlands RSL once we can meet as a group again.) Our members are now fondly remembering our last dinner, a seafood meal, served at our Redlands RSL. It was an excellent meal, efficiently served and in great company and now it seems an age ago. On 22 March we held our AGM and very few changes resulted. Frank Williams agreed to accept the position of Vice President which was previously filled by Graham Hinson. A vote of thanks to Graham for his work well-done assisting the Secretary and best wishes for improvement in his health. Thanks also to other members of our Management Committee who have given their time freely for the benefit of members. The pandemic has virtually closed our branch and caused many planned events to be cancelled. Sadly, it has also meant that the loss of two of our members could not be commemorated as we normally would. We lost our long-time member and Newsletter Editor Dudley Orchard. Dudley had been in poor health for some time but still managed to get to most of our meetings. He will be sadly missed. A special thanks to Evan Edwards for doing so much on the branch’s behalf in these difficult times.

Added to this was the sudden loss of Bev Viertel. His sudden death was quite a shock and a reminder to us all that we are prone to accidents. It is intended that both these members will be remembered by the branch at appropriate ceremonies as soon as the regulations permit. Our thoughts are also with John Butler on the loss of his lovely wife, Fay. Our members are endeavouring to keep in contact even if it is only by phone and computer. We would like to maintain the spirit of the branch and continue to provide support to our members where possible. Eric Shaw, President. Branch Contact: Les Warner, Membership / Development Officer, 07 3821 2894 Mobile 0450 577 186.ROCKHAMPTON: (Meeting: 4th Wednesday of each month. 1000hr for 1030hr start. Venue: Frenchville Sports Club)Our members continue to share, with the rest of the community, the frustration of knowing a number of planned functions for 2020 will not be realized. One is reminded of the quotation from the 15th century German cleric, Thomas à Kempis, “Man proposes, God disposes”. Unfortunately the pandemic has done just that beyond all expectation. So now is the time to call upon that SPIRIT of the ANZACS to see us through this trying period. On a positive note, all official positions were filled (unopposed) at our AGM on 26 February, with the ever-popular

John Aitken continuing as President. It was with regret that members accepted the resignation of secretary, John Day, because of a health issue. Over many years John has been responsible for keeping our membership numbers and meeting attendances beyond all expectation. His organizing skills are exceptional and it is hoped that he will still have much to contribute to the future well-being of our branch. Thank you John; “Don’t forget us, cobber”. At our 22 January meeting, State President Alex Garlin informed Nashos members of their entitlements (re health care etc.) together with the direction the organization will take in the future. At a social get-together following the meeting, Alex soon challenged the concept of “Six degrees of Separation”

when he discovered that several of his family ancestors had close associations with a number of our own. A big thank-you, Alex, for you attendance. Before the effects of the fall-out of the pandemic were upon us, we again commemorated NASHO DAY at the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens, with Padre Barrie Harvey and President John Aitken officiating. Again we are grateful to have the Capricornia Silver Band provide the music and the 227Sqn Air Force Cadets as the catafalque party. Until next issue…..If we follow the basic principles of hygiene as instilled during our National Service Training I’m sure we will overcome all that the pandemic demon can throw at us. The photo shows an emotional time for all when, on behalf of branch members, Adrian Martion (L) and President John Aitken (R) presented Robynne Clifton with replicas of her late husband’s service medals. The originals were callously stolen when she was being treated in a Brisbane hospital for a serious health issue. The Rockhampton Morning Bulletin gave coverage of the full story in a February issue. Branch contact: Secretary John Phillips. Ph: 07 4928 1017 / 0418739113 SUNSHINE COAST: (Meeting: 2nd Tuesday of the odd month at 1000 hrs. Venue: Maroochydore RSL) What a difference 2 months can make. We have learned all about social distancing, staying at home, washing our hands 50 times a day and how to side step in Supermarkets when we have been brave enough to go out and look for toilet paper. Nashos are a resilient bunch and we are used to obeying orders so we will come out of this stronger than before. We were lucky enough on 14th March to get our AGM over before the lockdown and I am pleased to report that all Executives and Committee members were re-elected for another term. They had organised a number of events an outings that have unfortunately been put on hold. Be assured as soon as things return to normal, we will be together again. We were able to hold our National Servicemen’s Day service on 10th February at the Caloundra RSL Memorial Gardens in February which was well attended and followed by a lovely morning tea in the Club’s Sub Branch rooms. The photo shows Don Holt addressing those present while President Ted Weidner looks on. Anzac Day was very different this year but we can still remember and honour all past and present servicemen. Personally we laid a private wreath at our local memorial. In the meantime if any members are in need of assistance please do not hesitate to contact President Ted Weidner or any committee member. Please stay safe and keep well. Branch Contact: Ted Weidner Phone 07 5443 5915.

TABLELAND: (Meeting: 2nd Sunday of each month at 1000 hours. Venue: Nasho’s shelter at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park).Who ever heard of Social Isolation before; certainly not in this publication? We are experts at doing it now resulting in the necessity of many trips to the tip and council having to put in extra staff to control the deliveries to the pruning’s area. If you are wondering what to do with this toilet paper that was purchased under member instructions, it will now make novel prizes for the future monthly raffles. Motto - “like it or wipe it”. We managed to hold our

AGM including National Servicemen’s Day on Sunday 9 February. Well-attended by 100 people representing both members and public after using a live FNQ ABC radio onsite broadcast leading up to the event. It commenced with the opening of a Branch Vietnam military display at Tolga Historical Society and Museum. It focused on the National Service Scheme 1965 to 1972. The display is named in honour of former Tolga State School student and Nasho Joseph Steven RAMSAY whose youngest brother Rod from Caboolture and niece Christine Alderton from Townsville unveiled a memorial plaque on the day. Joe is buried in the Hemmant cemetery near a NSAA Brisbane East Branch memorial. Ironically, the building that houses the Vietnam Collection is a Lysaght Hut. It was destined

for the battlefields of Vietnam but instead remained in storage at the Wallangarra Army Depot on the Queensland and New South Wales border. The Army donated two of the huts to the museum. A Church Parade followed across the road at the Salvation Army church which included the dedication of three National Servicemen’s plaques. The photo shows. Branch Patron, Ray Byrnes, a 1955 Wacol Nasho responding to being presented with a Meritorious Service Award by Branch Secretary / Treasurer Terry Edmondson. In the background Branch President John Hardy and SAO Major Peter Townsend who lead the service look on. Costs for lunch that followed were met with a Tablelands Regional Council Community Grant. The Branch AGM and General Meeting that followed after lunch resulted in minimal changes of office bearers. Thanks to all that supported the Branch for 2019 particularly our Social Committee of Bill and Kay Mc Donald and VP Ted Rolley. All Branch meetings are suspended until further notice. Branch Contact: Secretary Terry Edmondson Ph. 07 4095 4154. TOWNSVILLE: (Meeting: 2nd Wednesday each month 1930 hours. Venue: Townsville RSL.) There is at least some good to come out of having to stay at home – it is a good opportunity to declutter. Having just decluttered our former Secretary’s house we know the importance of decluttering and not leaving it to someone else. When decluttering think. ‘What will my kids do with this when I am gone’ - some things lose their value. Our main event this year has been the National Servicemen’s Day service and luncheon on 14 February. The incoming Brigadier of 3 Brigade, Kahlil Fegan DSC, took over on 20 January and his first outside function was our Commemorative Service and lunch. The Brigadier gave the address of the day and in talking of the future he said, “What has not changed is that our Nation still needs to be safeguarded by young soldiers, sailors, airmen who are willing to put ‘Service Above Self’ ”. That is true of every generation regardless of how they entered the service. The photo shows 3rd Brigade staff L to R, LO Lt Oliver Palmer, RSM WO1 Mark Retallick OAM CSM, President Vince, Brigadier Kahlil Fegan DSC, LCPL Tyson Robinson. The service was supported by the Catafalque and Flag parties from 109th Battery of 4th Field Regiment, RAA and music and vocalist from 1 RAR Band. There was a slight twist to the formalities in that the relief took water to the members of parties on a regular basis. Seventeen plaques, recognising the service of deceased Nashos and were dedicated by our Padre, Andrew Millsom. Poppies were then placed by family members, followed by the laying of books and wreaths. Fifteen books were laid and will be presented to schools when we are given the all clear. Three widow’s pins were presented to widows at the end of the service.

The luncheon, at Brother’s Leagues Club started with a difference; the Australian, Queensland and Nasho Flags were piped in and displayed on a stand donated by KG Engineering and the setting for the missing soldier had to be placed at a table. This year, we acknowledged Lt Kevin Andrew Hudson. During the function, President Vince presented two $500 Education Bursaries to Isabelle Carnes and Joshua Ferns, grandchildren of members; seven pins to widows and a set of Rising Sun Hat Badges to Tony Caruana, our Functions Officer, who is relocating to Brisbane. The flags were piped out. We managed to get our AGM in on the 11th March before everything went pear shape. All officers, bar one, were returned to their positions. The exception is that we are looking for a Functions Officer. We have cancelled April meetings and our 70/80 party, but will look to using Zoom program for June. Hoping all goes well for the September Canberra trip. Branch Contact: Secretary Ian Kuhl 07 4778 2313.WARWICK: (Meeting: 3rd Tuesday of every 2nd month 12 noon. Venue: Warwick RSL. King Street.) At the Annual Meeting, all positions did not change. Obviously the members are happy with the office-bearers as such. On a sad note, we report that one of our esteemed members, Margaret Swaine passed away after a long illness. Our condolences to Bob and family at this trying time. Margaret always had a smile on her face and was the instigator of our bi-monthly social luncheons. She will be greatly missed. We also acknowledge the passing of ex-President Colin Bell. We hold fond memories of our trips to Canberra and Townsville with him. The Warwick Cenotaph area has been refurbished, World War I guns, repositioned and further work on the sandstone dais has been held up, waiting for the black marble slabs to arrive from China. It was hoped that this work would be completed in time for Anzac Day, but the COVID 19 put paid to that. WACOL HERITAGE PRECINCTVince Crowley and John Hardy OAM researched how the Precinct had been developed with all its trials and tribulations since we first negotiated a lease from the Commonwealth Government in 2005. From a piece of bare earth and a few derelict buildings we now have all buildings renovated or being renovated and are waiting the lease from the Brisbane City Council. As a result of this research, a brochure was prepared with a timeline detailing all the steps along the way. This brochure was distributed to members who attended the 2019 State Conference. A copy will be sent to all Branches and a copy will be put on the State Website.
