Learning Activity 1: SAP Review Scenario—Sansa Review the following Winterfell Institute satisfactory academic progress scenario and answer the following questions related to Sansa’s SAP. Check your responses using the Answer Key on page 65.

Winterfell Institute offers undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs which require completion of 120 credit hours. The maximum timeframe is 180 credits for this program. The school requires a 2.5 GPA to graduate. Winterfell reviews SAP at the end of each semester, so it uses a financial aid warning period as part of its satisfactory academic progress (SAP) policy. Winterfell also uses financial aid probation and has an appeal policy. While on probation, a student is immediately placed on an academic plan under the supervision of an academic advisor. Winterfell rounds all SAP calculations up or down to the nearest tenth of a percentage (e.g., 0.734 is rounded down to 73 percent and 0.735 is rounded up to 74 percent). Sansa is a sophomore majoring in Biology. During the 2016–17 academic year, her freshman year, she maintained SAP by completing 21 of the 30 credit hours with a cumulative 3.2 GPA. During the Fall 2017 semester, she drops her two 4-credit hour classes to plan her wedding, gets married, and goes on a honeymoon at The Wall. She breaks her leg ice climbing and is off her feet for four weeks. However, she completes 6 of 14 credit hours during the fall semester, and she has a cumulative 3.0 GPA at the end of the fall semester. In the Spring 2018 semester, Sansa registers for 12 hours. Although her leg healed, Sansa’s 10-year-old step-son moves in. She has a hard time adjusting to parenting, and now suffers migraines. To cope with being a newlywed and a new mom, Sansa drops one 4-credit hour class. She completes eight credit hours. At the end of spring semester, Sansa has earned a total of 35 credit hours with a total cumulative GPA of 3.1. 1. What is the pace that a Winterfell student must maintain to complete the Biology program within 180

attempted credits? ___________________________________________________________________________________

2. What is Sansa’s cumulative rate of progression (pace) at the end of the Fall 2017 semester? ___________________________________________________________________________________

Learning Activity 2: SAP Appeals, Probation, and Academic Plans

Locate a copy of the satisfactory academic progress policy that is provided to students at your school. Indicate whether or not the following elements are included for SAP appeals, financial aid probation, and academic plans, and list the information that is provided in your school’s policy related to each element. If your school does not offer the SAP appeal, financial aid probation, or academic plan options, create a written policy for your school in the space provided for each policy element. Review your answers with the individual from your office who is responsible for monitoring and updating the financial aid SAP policy, paying particular attention to any elements missing from your school’s written policies and procedures.
