We are delighted to bring you the ninth edition of Narva News.

In this issue, we’ll take a look at some of our exciting new product launches and innovative marketing that epitomises our Vision To Go Further. Read about these from Page 3 onwards.

On page 4 we feature coverage of Narva’s picturesque trip through Western Victoria’s iconic Big Desert, followed by an informative article on page 7,

In the last issue of Narva News, we had kitted out a Ford Ranger with Narva product and dashing livery – our take on a corporate vehicle that we could use to personally test our products out in the field; easily recognisable at industry events and out on the open road.

The Narva Ranger has been a great success for us; its many 4WD adventures well documented on Facebook and a gleaming presence at 4WD shows. The only problem was sharing the Narva Ranger amongst an Australia-wide sales team!

At Narva, we live and breathe what we do. We want our sales teams to go further, where our customers go; to be able to personally stand behind the products they sell. Because of this,

we now have a small and growing family of Narva Rangers around the country, embarking on weekend road and 4WD trips, showcasing our latest products and wowing punters at 4WD shows across Australia.

Subtly different in their modifications and use of Narva product, these vehicles represent the capabilities of our high quality products and those of our industry friends.

You can find details and pictures of each build and subsequent 4WD adventures on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/narvaaustralia), where we have just surpassed the huge milestone of 50,000 likes. Keep an eye out for a Narva Ranger near you – they get around!

touching on the importance of strobe SAE class ratings.

Nothing instils confidence in a product like reading about those who have seen long term success with it – hear from a disaster response team making the rounds (page 8), plus a veteran road safety campaigner whose Narva equipped B-double has just ticked over the 1 million km mark!

7" L.E.D HEADLAMP

THE VISION

Narva sets a new standard with the second generation Truck-Lite L.E.D headlamp.

Narva has partnered with leading L.E.D headlamp manufacturer, Truck-Lite, to launch the ground-breaking new 7" H4 L.E.D headlamp onto the Australian market.

The eagerly-anticipated release provides Narva buyers with a multitude of benefits over traditional headlamps, while also offering many enhancements over the first generation lamp which was already considered the most advanced and toughest truck L.E.D in the world.

The 7" (178mm) free form package features stealth-styled reflectors, delivering drivers the superior white light of

L.E.D technology across three core functions: park lights, low beam and high beam, resulting in even more light on the road.

A complex reflector design accurately and evenly distributes light for the best visibility pattern possible, targeting the most important areas of the road where traditional projector systems can’t reach.

Functionality aside, the headlamp is aesthetically pleasing providing a uniquely stylish and modern appearance (both when on and off) thanks to its split-lamp design.

As with other Narva lamps, the product is extremely shock and vibration-resistant and features a virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lens that has been treated with a special non-yellowing coating to ensure the lamp stays clear and well-protected.

Encasing the solid state internals is a military-grade housing which employs die-cast aluminium construction, for corrosion and impact-resistant longevity.

All this provides the headlamp with “E”, ADR and IP68 approval while also meeting EMC-R10 / CISPR 25 requirements; for additional peace of mind Narva provides a three year warranty.

Headlamp installation is a simple process for both new and older trucks thanks to the pre-wired H4 connector which is a direct fit for traditional headlamp wiring adaptors.

Although originally designed for US military vehicles such as the Hummer, Narva’s 7" L.E.D lamp is broadly suitable for a wide range of vehicles including light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, off-road vehicles, classic cars and motorcycles.

The innovative new lamps are available from all leading transport, automotive and four wheel drive outlets throughout Australia.

VICTORIAN DESERT TRIP… L.E.D LIGHT AND BAR TEST

Western Victoria is home to some iconic national parks and 4WD adventure spots. The aptly named Big Desert is, quite literally, a 1,130 square kilometre section of flat desert country with soft white sand and low brush forming the terrain. In certain areas you will come across larger dunes which provide opportunities for increased elevation, allowing fantastic views of the wide-stretching natural beauty that forms the border of Victoria and South Australia.

The team at Narva recently set out on a trip to visit this natural wonder and its surrounding areas, including Wyperfeld National Park. A twelve man convoy shared between eight vehicles, the purpose of this trip was to take our L.E.D light bars and

driving lights to a mix of unusual terrain, including tight winding sand tracks as well as open wide savannah. As a bonus, these locations provided for some awesome photography and video footage that we use in our catalogues and at trade shows. They are also just too much fun to pass up!

Toyota Landcruisers, Ford Rangers, Nissan Patrols and Land Rover Defenders put the Narva gear through its paces, starting with some standard highway driving until we reached the small country town of Rainbow and set up camp on the fringe of Wyperfeld National Park, at a site called Lake Albacutya – a dry lake. From here we travelled north-west through Wyperfeld, bush camping at Big Billy Bore for our second night.

The next day we journeyed on to and through scenic Big Desert. Vastly different to our adventure through the Victorian High Country, there were no river crossings or near-vertical high country mountains. But it certainly had the corrugations, occasional hilltop views, an amazing sunset and a desolate desert feel to it. With Narva lights guiding the way, nothing went amiss for us – nothing we could not see, anyway. The odd failed sandy hill climb and need for alternative routes, plus the Narva Ranger getting bogged up to its axles provided some interesting moments.

The third night’s camp was on the well known Border Track, at a site called Red Bluff. Red Bluff was recently burnt out to within an inch of its life from bushfire.

Heat, dust and endless corrugations make this trip a little different to the Victorian High Country, but a great test for Narva’s tough L.E.D Lights and Bars.

VICTORIAN DESERT TRIP… L.E.D LIGHT AND BAR TEST

Even the bush drop dunny was reduced to

a heap of rubble and twisted corrugated

iron. It was from here that on Sunday we

trekked the last little stretch along Border

Track, which as the name suggests, darts

in and out between the Victorian and South

Australian border. Back on the bitumen and finishing up with lunch at Nhill, it was then a tarmac trip back home to Narva headquarters in Melbourne.

Big Desert is a must visit for those adventuring through Western Victoria.

With some fairly mild 4WDing afoot, the surrounding tracks and dunes are suitable for lightly experienced tourers.

FLASH NEW NARVA ‘EUROTECH’ L.E.D STROBES

Narva’s new range of Eurotech 12/24V dual voltage L.E.D strobes / rotating beacons have been designed specifically for the commercial and construction industries with a choice of two sizes on offer.

More compact than other alternatives in the market, the Eurotech beacons provide an affordable solution for high quality light output and durability.

A benefit of using the latest Eurotech beacons is their ability to perform two light functions in one, being able to both flash and rotate, and offering the option of six adjustable flash patterns thanks to advanced L.E.D technology.

Narva’s Eurotech L.E.D beacons are more affordable than traditional heavy duty L.E.D beacons, while still providing an impressive light output and high end build quality. Furthermore they meet the heavy vehicle regulation 2013, number 77, making them suitable for on road use.

Buyers can choose from two sizes, a low profile option (P/No. 85254A) and a standard height (P/No. 85260A) alternative, both available with a flange base. The flange base units allow alternative and synchronised operation of up to four strobe units.

The low profile option is also available in two additional mounting configurations: a magnetic base

STROBE “CLASS” CONFUSION?

This standard, known as SAE J845, describes the minimum requirements of “Optical Warning Devices for Authorised Emergency, Maintenance and Service Vehicles.” Under the standard, there are three categories of light warning devices: Class 1 (brightest), Class 2 and Class 3 (least bright), based on light output and therefore suitability for an application.

SAE J845 dictates that a light meeting the requirements of Class 1 is suitable for clearing traffic, a Class 2 light is suitable for blocking traffic / warning of hazards, and Class 3 is suitable for identifying vehicles.

Strobe light output is measured in candela-seconds/minute (cd-s/m) and this figure determines what class a strobe belongs to. Minimum requirements for each class vary with the colour of the light, but for the purpose of amber strobes, the minimum for each class is as follows: 18,000 cd-s/m for Class 1, 4,500 cd-s/m for Class 2, and 1,800 cd-s/m for Class 3.

As a Class 1 strobe is at least four times brighter than a Class 2 and ten times brighter than a Class 3, it may be used for

GOING FURTHER

Getting the right strobe for the job is important and not all strobes are created equally. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) issues a standard adopted by Narva to ensure the strobe you choose is suitable for a given application.

Class 2 or Class 3 applications. Similarly, a Class 2 strobe, being brighter than a Class 3, may be used where Class 3 is required.

Because the candela ratings for each class are only minimum requirements used for classification, it is important to note that although a strobe may be labelled a Class 1, this does not mean it will have the same brightness/intensity as another Class 1 strobe. Narva’s Class 1 strobes, such as the new Eurotech range, far exceed the minimum requirements for Class 1, offering superior light output and making them suitable for many applications.

GOOD SAMARITANSHELPED BY NARVA

Australia’s ability to respond to natural disasters has been strengthened following the recent launch of a purpose-built disaster relief unit (DRU), organised by leading Christian charity, Samaritan’s Purse. The DRU is a fully fledged mobile response unit designed to arrive at disaster sites with enough tools and equipment to mobilise 60 to 80 volunteers. While not the first responder in a disaster – that’s left to the emergency services – the DRU will arrive on site when safe, and stay for the long-term assisting those affected with a wide range of clean-up, repair and counselling services. Samaritan’s Purse Board Member, David Dawson, said that although the charity has been operating in Australia for a number of years, it’s previous in-field resources have been limited.

“We were heavily involved in the ‘Black Saturday’ fires in 2009, Samaritan’s Purse worked consistently in the Marysville and King Lake area for the next 18 months helping out wherever we could,” David said. “More recently in 2013 we deployed for three months at the flood site disaster in Bundaberg. Until now our equipment has mostly consisted of dual cab 4x4

utilities and box trailers; the new DRU will definitely allow us to offer more help where it’s needed.” Built and imported from the United States, the DRU features a 14.5 metre trailer based on a professional race car transporter. The unit features a mezzanine level used to store equipment such as wheelbarrows and pressure washers. The lower section includes storage areas for tables, chairs and tools while a workbench allows servicing of chainsaws and other power equipment while in the field. At the front end of the trailer is an air conditioned command centre with three work stations, a fridge and coffee machine. The unit also has onboard water supply and a 16 kVA diesel generator to supply power. For added floor

space, a 32 foot (9.7 metre) annex can also be quickly

erected. The DRU was specified with the full contingent of Narva

lighting including a combination of L.E.D marker lamps, ultraslim marker lamps and premium triple rear combination tail light assemblies. Inside lighting is also Narva L.E.D, while extra visibility at staging areas is provided by Narva work lamps. The trailer is coupled to a 440hp Mercedes Benz Actros prime mover which also features Narva lighting including Extreme HID driving lights. Behind the wheel of the DRU is veteran truck driver and volunteer, Jim Winter, who has been driving heavy commercial vehicles for over 45 years.Jim has been on the road with the unit since August as part of an 11,000 kilometre, 40-city ‘Peace Time

Promotion Tour’, talking to many councils along the way and letting them know about the relief work undertaken by Samaritan’s Purse. As a man who has earned his living on the road for close to half a century, Jim has a fine appreciation of the Narva product. “The Extreme HID driving lights are very good – I also run them on my Colorado and my son has them on his Landcruiser – I’ve had Narva for years, there is no substitute for good driving

lights, it’s one of the most important things you can fit to a truck,” Jim said. “The lights on the trailer are also good, being L.E.Ds they don’t draw a lot of power, they won’t drain the battery. And the work lamps are brilliant, some have been recessed into the trailer and they provide so much light at staging areas.” Before seeing active relief duty, Jim hopes to fit the prime mover with a Narva L.E.D lightbar as well as striplights along the fuel tanks for increased on-road

presence and visibility. David said that developing the DRU would not have been possible without the public’s generous donations. “What we do hinges on the goodwill of our donors, big money has been spent on the DRU and without the goodwill of the public it just wouldn’t have been possible,” he said.

NARVA, THE CHOICE FOR ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGNERA Narva-equipped B-Double truck and trailer set has proven itself in demanding Australian conditions, with the trailer smashing the 1 Million kilometre mark and still performing strongly.

Aside from hauling freight from Dubbo to Brisbane, Melbourne and beyond, the truck provides another important service, promoting the many positive aspects of the road transport industry.

Operated by well-known heavy vehicle road safety advocate and professional truck driver, Rod Hannifey, the truck regularly attends industry events and Rod often shares his cabin with industry stakeholders.

On the highways, Rod’s B-double acts as a mobile billboard alerting road users as to the importance of the road transport industry to Australia’s wealth and prosperity.

To further educate fellow motorists, the back of the trailer features the ‘Truckies’ Top 10 Tips’ for sharing the road, with one tip being promoted each month, these tips and other safety information can be found on Rod’s www.truckright.com.au website.

“We had all these magnificent trucks on our roads promoting all manner of goods, from vineyards to dog food, but not one truck was promoting the good work of the transport industry,” Rod said.

“The industry seems to get a lot of bad press, so I wanted to put something out there in front of the public that was positive.”

“I try and take the truck and attend one public event per month, I’ve also had the CEOs of NRMA and VicRoads ride with me, along with politicians and journalists so that they can get a better understanding of some of the challenges that truck drivers face.”

Now around five years old the tautliner trailers are fully specified with Narva lighting, while Rod’s Kenworth K200 prime mover has also been given the Narva treatment.

“The trailers had another brand of lights when we got them, but since them we’ve replaced all of these with Narva and added some extras and additional lights where needed,” Rod said.

“We’ve added reversing lights, we’ve added work lights for trailer hook ups, we’ve changed the side indicator lights to be better seen – I’ve even got some at the rear of the trailer to illuminate the ‘TRUCKRIGHT’ livery.”

Rod’s prime mover features additional Narva lighting from the replacement headlamps, improved step lights and Daytime Running Lights to the bull bar-mounted HID driving lights and L.E.D marker lamps also on the bull bar.

…THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ALSO OPERATED BY THE ENGINE BRAKES, SO THEY’RE ON A LOT OF THE TIME COMPARED TO A NORMAL TRUCK – WE HAVEN’T EVEN HAD A SINGLE DIODE FAIL.”‘WITH NARVA

“The Kenworth operates an EBSS (Electronic Brake Safety Systems) package, which means that the brake lights are also operated by the engine brakes, so they’re on a lot of the time compared to a normal truck – we haven’t even had a single diode fail.”

With Rod’s Truck Right program having made a definite impact in the last five years, plans are now afoot for a replacement package to be launched in 2016.

“As a full-time driver I do 200,000 kilometres a year, I have seven children and then I have to balance this with the Truck Right work, it can really be challenging, but the cause is very worthwhile.”

Narva has expanded its market-leading Senator L.E.D work lamp range with the introduction of the exciting new Mini Senator, offering many of the features and benefits of the larger variants but in more compact dimensions as required for some applications.

Suitable for both trade and recreational use, the Mini Senator combines a modern, low-profile design while delivering a brilliant white light output, with the option of either Flood Beam or Hybrid Beam models.

Despite its more compact dimensions, the Mini Senator is still a big performer. The Flood Beam model (72465) produces 1200 lumens from its 4x3W L.E.Ds, while the Hybrid (72469) produces an even brighter 2000 lumens from 4x5W L.E.Ds. A standout feature of the Hybrid is its beam performance, which has a spot beam characteristic for longer light penetration.

With long-term performance in mind, both variants feature robust, nylon-reinforced

ventilated housing, designed to cool the internal L.E.D module while remaining fully sealed and IP66 rated.

Complementing the tough yet innovative design is the use of virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lenses and a stainless steel pedestal mounting bracket that’s been engineered to provide sturdy mounting, combined with easy swivel movement that doesn’t require special tools for adjustment.

For ease of use and accurate positioning, the Mini Senator features an ergonomic, integrated

handle and inbuilt weatherproof switch.

The low current draw Mini Senator are 9-33V multi-voltage and for added peace of mind, are covered by Narva’s 5 year L.E.D warranty. The work lamps are available from leading transport and automotive outlets throughout Australia.
