On the cusp of CEO Steve Waterham’s retirement, GUD acquires Narva’s parent company

Quality meets quality

Light Safety – The inaugural edition of our guest written feature

Welcome to the tenth edition of Narva News.

Sadly, in this issue we give thanks and farewell to friend and former CEO Steve Waterham, who recently retired in time for his 66th birthday.

On page 3 we cover perhaps the biggest event in Narva’s history; the recent acquisition of Brown & Watson International by GUD Holdings.

As always, we have many more exciting new products to showcase in the Narva Range.

Narva are proud to return as major sponsors for the tough-as-nails 2015 Outback Challenge, an annual 4WD competition which takes place in the vicinity of Broken Hill, NSW. Since its inception in 1999, the event has amassed a reputation as one of the toughest and most gruelling competitions for both man and machine – not just within Australia, but throughout the world – attracting many local and international competitors.

Spread over hundreds of hectares of super remote outback country, much of which is made up of cattle, sheep and goat stations, the event is not your average tour through the outback – smashed

windscreens, broken lights, rollovers, consistent 40+ degree days and water crossings up to the shoulders are all the norm in this extreme test of will and might. Run over multiple stages/checkpoints, Narva lays claim to a few of the most infamous legs in the competition: the fitting night time stages and the Mad Max run – a pedal to the metal, bone-jarring dash to the finish line. Event coverage for 2015 will appear on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/narvaaustralia) and more information about the event can be found on the official Outback Challenge Facebook page. www.facebook.com/outbackchallenge

You can read about these from Page 4 onwards.

Our friends at XL Industries talk about their new range of Narva-equipped truck and utility service bodies on page 6.

Also join guest writer and road safety campaigner Rod Hannifey for some useful road lighting tips on page 9.

New CEO of Brown & Watson International, Bob Pattison

GUD ACQUISITION OF BROWN & WATSON INTERNATIONAL

WITH NARVA

As the sun began to set on the illustrious career of Brown & Watson Int. CEO and majority stakeholder Steve Waterham, his impending retirement from the industry spawned an opportunity for a successor to lead the auto-electrical giant and its market leading brands, Narva and Projecta, well into the future.

Over the years, having been on the receiving end of many an offer to purchase the company, Steve Waterham had remained reluctant to hand over the reins of Brown & Watson to just anyone.

After forging the company from its humble beginnings into an international powerhouse, across a 45 year strong career, Mr Waterham wanted to ensure above all that the new owners carried

on his legacy within the company; that the names and reputations he had developed for the Narva and Projecta marques remained long after his departure from the business.

Enter GUD Holdings, a consumer and industrial products group, whose brand portfolio includes such household names as Ryco, Sunbeam, Oates, Goss, Wesfil, Davey, and Dexion Australia. Both Australian owned companies, with the many parallels existing between GUD and Brown & Watson,

including their vast experience within the automotive industry, Mr Waterham and fellow shareholder Tim Miller could not see a more perfect fit for the prospective acquisition.

As we at Narva farewell Steve Waterham, we simultaneously welcome the new CEO of Brown & Watson, former Ryco CEO and current AAAA president Bob Pattison. Appointed by GUD Holdings, Mr. Pattison is a well-known industry identity, having graced top level management roles at GUD, Nissan Australia, Calsonic Australia, and International Harvester.

In spite of the most significant change in the history of the company, it remains business as usual at Narva and Brown & Watson, with the backing of a new parent ensuring the future success of the company for decades to come, along with a sisterhood of fellow market leading brands collaborating under the GUD banner and paving the way for exciting new innovations to feature under the Narva and Projecta brands.

PLUS 60 PERFORMANCE GLOBES

WITH NARVA

Coinciding with the launch of its new Plus 60 range of performance globes (see below), Narva has embarked on a radio and outdoor billboard campaign highlighting the significant light volume difference between using factory halogen globes and performance globes.

The radio spots compare vehicle lighting to different volume sounds to emphasise this difference in performance, whilst the billboards feature photographs of two vehicles for comparison: one equipped with factory lighting and the other powered by Narva’s Blue Plus 110 performance globes.

You can listen to the radio ad here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHxVupIu30M

Narva, has launched its new range of Plus 60 performance headlamp globes, providing a cost effective upgrade to OEM lighting across a wide variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles.

As the name suggests, the globes offer 60 per cent more light on the road compared to standard halogen globes while remaining street-legal and complying with all ADR requirements. This translates to an impressive light output which shines a beam 20 metres longer than conventional globes.

The Plus 60’s bright light output can reduce driver eye fatigue and improve safety by increasing road visibility, particularly useful in winter months when the nights are longest and natural light is at its lowest.

The Plus 60 globe is a replacement for its predecessor, the Plus 50, and while it offers improved performance, there is no increase in power draw and the globes remain entirely safe for use with polycarbonate headlamp lenses.

As well as providing greatly enhanced light output compared to standard halogen globes, the Plus 60 globes deliver longer life leading to reduced running costs particularly in vehicles that spend extended periods driving at night such as trucks and taxis.

The Plus 60 globes are available in a number or variants including: H1, H4 and H7. For vehicles using H3, HB3 and HB4 globes, the Narva Plus 50 globes will remain.

At a time when many Australian manufacturing companies are feeling the pinch from increased competition and tough business conditions, Brisbane-based XL Service Bodies is enjoying strong growth and expanding its Narva-equipped model range. The company also exports its Australian-made service bodies, having supplied products to 15 countries globally.

XL Service Bodies has a staff of 45 and the company’s Wacol facility is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art sheet metal machines and computer-aided design and manufacturing equipment.

According to company General Manager, JP Shelburn, it’s the quality and innovation levels that set XL apart from many competitors.

“Over time we’ve evolved the products, we’ve made them stronger, lighter and more user-friendly while continually investing in the latest manufacturing technology.”

XL uses a wide range of Narva lighting, including L.E.D work lamps, L.E.D reverse, stop/tail and rear directional indicator lamps, L.E.D mine bars and beacons as well as L.E.D interior lights for all internal cabinets.

The manufacturer’s relationship with Narva has been a long and fruitful one, with Narva

being the lighting supplier of choice for many years now.

According to JP, there’s plenty to like about the Narva range.

“We use a lot of Narva products, there’s excellent product variation, strong product support and we’re getting quality at an affordable price,” he said.

“XL gets a lot of repeat customers, there are never any complaints about the Narva lighting, and we’ve never had any issues.”

While some other manufacturers in the industry have gone by the wayside since the Global Financial Crisis, XL continues to grow and look forward to further expansion.

The company’s customer base exceeds 5,000 and comprises a mixture of trade-specific buyers as well as large scale telecommunications and utilities clients.

“Among our customers we have plenty of plumbers, electricians, refrigeration installers and mobile mechanics as well as some high profile major company maintenance fleets.”

NEW LOW PROFILE SLIMLINE WARNING LIGHTS

With a depth of just 7mm and an overall size of 131 x 30mm these ultra-slim self-contained L.E.D warning Lights come in a range of colours including Amber, White, Red, Blue plus a combined Red/Blue version.

The small size of these lights belies the number of features that are built in as they offer immense versatility with 23 selectable flash patterns and the ability to synchronise multiple units for simultaneous or alternate flashing. A non-volatile memory retains

the last flash pattern used on power up, eliminating the need to cycle through the 23 patterns each time. To meet the requirements of some emergency services an auto dim function is also built in to decrease brightness to 60% at night time.

Suitable for both 12 and 24 volt applications these multi-voltage lights use a minimal current draw of 0.25A on 12V and 0.125A on 24V (depending on the flash pattern), all are reverse polarity protected and each comes pre-wired with 200mm of cable.

An incredibly long operating life of up to 100.000 hours is achieved from six high powered L.E.D’s and these are covered by Narva’s 5 year L.E.D warranty.

A new family of extremely low profile warning lights has been released by Narva with a host of features that will appeal to a broad range of emergency and service vehicles.

The lamps are vibration resistant and their weatherproof design makes them suitable for external and internal use.

These versatile slim lights can be hard-mounted using fasteners or alternatively, they can be quickly and easily mounted using the self-adhesive 3M double-sided tape supplied in the box.

LIGHTS ON THE ROAD by Rod Hannifey Road Safety Campaigner and Truck Driver

Can you have too much light for night driving? Rod Hannifey offers us some invaluable lighting advice that applies to all road users.

Narva supply many different types, sizes, styles and outputs of forward lighting – from factory headlight replacement globes to long distance driving lights and L.E.D light bars that turn night into day. But there is one very important thing that I would ask all road users to consider when it comes to forward lighting: the effect your lights will have on other road users. It is one thing to have lighting that shines 100 metres wide and a kilometre down the road for your own vision and safety, but oncoming traffic will not be as appreciative of your lights if you fail to dip them responsibly.

On seeing the glare of an approaching vehicle’s lights at night, you can usually see when they are dipped and the hope is that all will then dip before breaching crests or curves, otherwise you will likely be blinding someone travelling towards you. At highway speeds of 100km/h for each vehicle, you have a closing speed of 200 km/h. Do you really want someone who is blinded, coming at you at that speed – and quite likely – with only 20 centimetres of white paint between you? Surely not.

If you do not see the oncoming vehicle dip before that crest or curve, the time to flash is before you see each other. This again will pass on a message early, yet still not blind the oncoming vehicle. If they come into view without having dipped, a quick flash

may then remind them. For your safety and for theirs, though, getting even and flashing at the last minute might make you feel better, but could blind the other driver and possibly cause them to run off the road.

Having your lights correctly aligned is another important factor in safe road lighting. You have paid good money to fit additional or replacement lights that enable you to see, so why waste them on the top of the trees? If you have a ute or any vehicle towing a van or with a load in the

back, your lights will shine their beam higher than normal and not only will you lose the effectiveness and value of them, you can potentially blind other drivers approaching you with the aforementioned risks.

If going on a longer trip at night, please consider at the very minimum adjusting your headlights, as they are the lights you will rely on most and the ones likely to cause the most trouble for oncoming traffic. If you don’t consider other drivers, then they will be unlikely to consider you.

Until next time, safe travelling.

Narva has further improved its world-class Ultima 225 driving lamp range, with the addition of an L.E.D position light in all H.I.D models for improved safety and stylish new aesthetics.

The upgrade provides the lamps with a visually striking appearance while also greatly enhancing the visibility of the vehicle, particularly for oncoming traffic.

Following the success of Ultima 225 H.I.D lamps sold in Europe featuring the L.E.D position light, this addition will now be standard across all seven variants of Ultima 225 H.I.D

models sold in Australia and New Zealand.

Similar to traditional daytime running lamps, the L.E.D position light illuminates when a vehicle’s park lights are turned on, and only has a very low current draw of 0.10A at 12V and 0.06A at 24V.

Suitable for trucks, passenger cars and four wheel drives, the new Ultima 225 range retains all the other features that have made it a favourite with customers, including reliability,

longevity and a strong white light projection that reduces driving fatigue.

The durable design features an impact resistant housing and a virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lens, whilst a robust mounting system delivers maximum stability and rigidity.

For greater versatility and ease of installation, lamps feature four mounting positions – the reversible bracket has two bolt holes allowing forward or backward mounting to best suit the application. A ‘Plug and play’ wiring harness is also included with 50W H.I.D kits, now updated with a third wire for powering the position light from the park light system.

Adding to our ever-expanding range of heavy duty sealed rocker switches, Narva have answered the call for two additional switch face designs: one with a Beacon symbol and one with an L.E.D Light Bar symbol, screen-printed over the illuminated face, allowing operators to easily identify their Beacon and L.E.D Light Bar switches at a glance. Narva sealed rocker switches, as the name implies, have fully sealed fascias preventing the ingress of dust, water and debris. They have a broad operating temperature range, making them the ideal switch for exposed applications in the harshest of conditions and environments. Globe type switches, such as these, are not polarity sensitive and therefore are unaffected by positive or negative vehicle wiring used in most 4WDs.
