Section I General Information

The Eastern Africa Projects Fair (EAPF) 2019, similar to other Rotary Projects Fairs around the world, was a coming together of Rotary Clubs in Eastern Africa to promote global peace and understanding and to facilitate opportunity for Rotary clubs to collaborate on projects in that region. This was the 2nd edition of the EAPF sponsored by Rotary Districts 9211 and 9212, and featured Rotary clubs from about seven countries, namely Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. As an EAPF attendance grant recipient, Dougherty Valley /San Ramon (DVSR) RC sought to broaden the club’s international service opportunities with interest in researching the water sanitation and education needs in sub-Saharan Africa. As DVSR RC’s representative, the added objective was to learn from the experience of other Rotarians, be a good will ambassador, and become equipped to serve as a resource to other D5160 clubs, along the 680-corridor, and potentially interest clubs in partnering on projects in eastern Africa or other regions. Other D5160 Rotarians attending the EAPF were, PDG Karl Diekman (Woodland Rotary), PP Sheila Hurst (Redding West Rotary), PDG Laura Young (Anderson Rotary), Chris Young (Anderson Rotary), Jimmy Odusola (Woodland Sunrise Rotary).

Section II Summary of Experience

As a D5160 Project Fair Grant Recipient, Dougherty Valley / San Ramon Rotarian, Michelle Lee attended the Eastern Africa Projects Fair on April 30-May 5, 2019. In conjunction with the Project Fair, Michelle participated in some of the District 9212 & D9211 Conference and Assembly (DCA) events in Mombasa, Kenya, and volunteered for a service tree planting at Mida Creek, Watamu. On site participation provided an invaluable opportunity to meet Rotarians, make friends, and learn about a wide variety of projects in need of international partners. After the EAPF, Michelle visited the Matanya Primary School and donated school supplies and a fund-a-need, and visited Fort Jesus in Mombasa and a few Kenyan national parks before returning to California.

The experience began with an exciting e-mail from D5160 announcing the opportunity of a grant application to Rotary Clubs for travel to one of several Project Fairs in 2018-19. The Dougherty Valley/San Ramon club board approved application for the grant and solicited attendees from members interested in international service, the club foundation, the club board, and the general membership. The DVSR RC had participated in a visioning activity at the start of the Rotary year where the outcome was a strong interest in developing the club’s international service engagement, and the leadership was particularly supportive of any initiatives in this area and thrilled to apply and receive the grant to send a representative to the EAPF. The D5160 contact for the trip, Dr. Sheila Hurst, was highly supportive and helpful in facilitating our travel and lodging arrangements. Preparation for the trip included obtaining an e-Visa for Kenya on-line, and obtaining recommended shots and prescriptions for disease prevention medications from the San Francisco Department of Public Health Immunization and Travel Clinic. The majority of the time on site was devoted to the EAPF. One could easily spend endless hours talking to the sponsoring Rotarians about each fascinating project they had done and were proposing to do. The only limitation was the time and brief respites sought from the heat with elevated temperatures in the outdoor booths above 92 which felt 10 degrees hotter with humidity and enclosed space. In addition to the ongoing fair, the District conference offered interesting and inspirational addresses and presentations by the DG Jeff Bamford, PDG and RIPPR Vyv Deacon, Rotaractor John Mwangi and our own D5160 HEWRAG members PDG Karl Diekman and Dr. Sheila Hurst. There was a lively house of friendship area and evening events which boasted food, fellowship, and fun. There was also time to observe and appreciate the cultural differences and similarities of our hosts and enjoy the warm-hearted nature of the community-minded Rotarians. Following the EAPF Michelle and her husband, Roger, had the privilege and pleasure of visiting the Matanya Primary School outside of Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy in central Kenya. About 100 kids greeted them with smiles and cheerful antics in front of the camera. Each classroom was visited and school supplies, donated by Rotarians and friends, were distributed to the students and teachers. The few dictionaries were received like gold bars and the first aid supplies were gladly received for use during the upcoming sports seasons. The head teacher also able to repair a door and roof with funds given to the school. It was incredible pleasure to convey the good will from donors from far away California to the children at Matanya Primary School. At the end of the trip Michelle and Roger visited Tsavo West National Park, Amboseli National Park, Mount Kenya, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy through a tour well designed by CAT Safari’s and smoothly coordinated through Rotarian PP Kathy Gailey.

The primary take-a-ways from the trip were a greater understanding and appreciation for the kind of projects that a club and district may support and the introduction to the challenges and faced by the people and the priorities of the Rotary Clubs in Eastern Africa. In particular an adequate supply of clean water is a tremendous challenge to many communities and unclean water and water scarcity diminishes life and the quality of life throughout the region. Projects in all of Rotary International’s focus areas are to be found and partnerships with honest, kind, and hard-working Rotarians can be had. Lessons learned were gleaned from every conversation. It was an enjoyable and educational experience which will be long remembered and more importantly, shared, and applied going forward. Presentations to the 6-clubs in the 680-corridor were offered and in planning. Further discussion and action in support of international service projects is planned in the RC of Dougherty Valley / San Ramon in 2019-20. In closing, D5160’s continued grant funding to attend project fairs is recommended as an investment in RI’s most valuable asset, Rotarians, and its global mission to serve others and advance peace, goodwill, and understanding.
