Dear Members and Friends of the Polish Roman CatholicUnion of America, Welcome to my annual State of the Union message. How is the Polish Roman Catholic Union of Americadoing in these still challenging times? Let me begin by reviewing the events of 2014 andproceed into what we are planning for 2015. First of all, as you know, the PRCUA held its 61stQuadrennial Convention in August, at the Grand Plaza Hotelon the banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. The host committee, chaired by District #5 Director JoanSylak, did an exceptional job in preparing for all of theactivities of the week. From the opening welcoming party onSaturday held at the PRCUA Misiuda Hall to the closingceremony on Wednesday morning, the committee performedadmirably. Thank you Joanie and the entire Pre-ConventionCommittee for a job well done. Previous issues of the Narod Polski reported extensively

about Convention activities. The budget was passed,amendments to the Constitution were made, and a newBoard of Directors and National Officers were elected. Those newly elected have been charged with theresponsibility of leading our organization for the next fouryears. I am humbled to say that I will again serve as yourpresident. Thank you. Our platform for the PRCUA remains the same as it waswhen I first was elected almost 5 years ago: • Financial strength, stability and integrity • Sales of our financial products • FraternalismLet me first address our financial position. We are very fortunate that actions, taken early in my firstterm, continue to contribute greatly to improving ourfinancial strength. Selling excess real estate in Cleveland and Wisconsin in2011 and in Philadelphia in 2014, achieved significantsavings. In addition to this, savings were incurred throughreductions in staff by retirements, job eliminations andconsolidations, pension and general operating expenses. Our annuity program continues to be profitable whilestill providing our members with very competitive interestrates when compared with those offered by bank certificatesof deposit or money market funds. Interest rates paid onvarying annuity maturities range from 2.5% to 2.75%. Due to the attention placed on our investment incomeand a watchful eye kept on our expenses, I am pleased toreport that 2014 recorded a net profit of $1,126,861 and anincrease in our surplus to $7.1million, a $500,000improvement. This represents the fourth consecutive profitable year andthe third year of reporting a profit of a million dollars ormore. Furthermore, since the end of 2010 when our surplusaccount was $3.6 million, in four years we have almostdoubled that amount and greatly strengthened ourorganization’s financial position. Our assets now total $205,000,000. Our dividends have grown every year since 2010 and wehave increased this distribution to our members from a low$61,000 in 2010 to $163,000 for 2014. We are pleased to be ableto return more to you our members, while also improving thefinancial status of our organization. We have been able to accomplish this while operatingwith the uncertainty that still influences our nationaleconomy and international affairs. These external influences

are quite challenging ineliciting worldwideconfidence and positiveeconomic growth. The full financialreport for 2014 can befound in detail on page 4of this issue of the NarodPolski.Let’s talk about sales. Our annuity sales in2014 were only slightlyhigher than the previousyear. We know that ourannuity rates are verycompetitive, but to offerhigher rates on ourannuities without acorresponding increase ininterest income to the PRCUA would weaken our improvingfinancial position. Be assured that we watch rate movementdaily and will adjust our annuity rate at a feasible time. In 2014, our life insurance sales were flat. Does this reflectthe uncertainty we all feel about the direction of our nationaleconomy and worldwide issues? How can we improve thesale of our life insurance products? We are constantly reviewing our life insurance programsand making adjustments where needed. Our Final ExpensePlan will add a whole life payment option that stretches outthe premium payment to allow this plan to become moreaffordable to individuals. We are offering a MEGA Plan thatwill combine separate premiums, commingling them into onewhen an applicant applies for a Term and Whole Life Plan.And we are testing a Graded Benefit Plan that will notrequire any medical questions. These are in addition to our existing plans for Whole Lifeand Term including the Family Benefit Plan that offers adiscount when two or more family members apply. During her 12 years of service, Anna represented thePRCUA and fostered growth throughout all of our dance andlanguage schools, as well as our athletic activities. As head ofthe Fraternal Department, she also assisted with manyadministration and management duties. Mrs. Sokolowskiwas Mrs. PRCUA to everyone! We are grateful for herdedication. Anna was always accompanied by her amiablehusband, Mark, who graciously stood by her side, silentlysupporting her. Thank you Anna and Mark.

These are trees up to45 feet tall, stripped of their branches and decorated with evergreen roping, paper flowers and ribbons. --- “Gorzkie Żale” (Bitter Lamentations), a typically Polish Lenten service, reflects on the Passion and Death ofChrist through a series of mournful chants. The hymns were published in a prayer book for the first time inWarsaw in 1707.

Chicago, IL - The Polish American Congress Charitable Foundation isformally announcing that it is accepting applications for the Richard GoreckiScholarship for this year. The amount of scholarships will be between $500.00and $1,000.00 as determined by the Scholarship Committee. To be eligible the applicant must be a citizen of the United States ofAmerica and of Polish ancestry. Applicant must be a full time student enrolledas a sophomore, junior, senior or post-graduate in an accredited undergraduateor graduate program at a college or university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 outof 4.0. Applicant must be a member of their local Polish American CongressDivision or, if none in their area, then a member through the National PAC. Application process is as follows:1. Completion of a PACCF Scholarship application. 2. Submit a resume, including:

a. Name and relationship to you of the nearest family member(s) from whom you ascribe your Polish ancestry;

b. Description of your academic and career goals. 3. Submit an original certificate of your most recent transcript, including an original certified copy of your GPA.4. With her business background and vast Polish folk danceand cultural experience, she has adapted very well to her duties as head of the PRCUA’sFraternal Department. In addition, Misia has been asked to take on the duties of administering theDepartments of Compliance and the Narod Polski Publication. She has willingly acceptedthese new responsibilities. Thank you Misia. Because our Constitution eliminated one of the two Vice Presidential positions, VicePresident Robert (Bob) Bielenda, could not seek another term. Bob and his lovely wifeEleanor proficiently represented the PRCUA throughout his 12 years in office. He fulfilledthe duties of his office with much dedication and was definitely our goodwill ambassadorto all of Polonia. Thank you Bob and Eleanor.What about our Fraternal Society Activities? The fraternal activities of our active Societies continue to grow with increasingparticipation of and by its members. But it is not enough. The Executive Board, in an effort to expand fraternalism to other parts ofPRCUALAND, is embarking on a new pilot program. In January, we engaged a member of the very active St. Stan’s Society #718 in Detroit,Mi. to accept a new position as Fraternal Field Organizer. Robert (Bob) Hojnacki haswillingly agreed to this challenge. He comes with an impressive resume of fraternalaccomplishments in St. Stan’s as well as in Sacred Heart Society #162, Wyandotte, Mi.Within Society #718, Bob is the Vice President, Social Director, Tournament Coordinatorand organizer of friendly bowling and golf competitions held between #718 and #162. We are pleased that Bob has accepted this assignment. Thank you Bob. The objective of this position is to target an inactive area of our membership toorchestrate interest in rejuvenating fraternal activities. In many areas Bob will act as afacilitator to help generate enthusiasm and participation in Polish language, Polish danceand our athletic events. If this experiment proves successful in reactivating dormant areas, we will expand theposition to include other parts of our organization. We need more members’ participation in our fraternal activities. We are ready to help.Please let us know how we can assist in your society or district plans. It is through these events that fraternalism, friendships and camaraderie can developand knowledge of our Polish heritage can grow and flourish.News from our Headquarters: Along with my election and that of Mrs. Jaminski, Mr. Jim Robaczewski was re-elected as our Secretary-Treasurer. Jim’s responsibilities are substantial as he is ourproperty manager and oversees the secretary and treasury functions, controller andgeneral office administration. He is our trouble shooter and go to guy. His department initiated an update of the Financial Secretary Manual. He has heldand will schedule training classes for all financial secretaries in Illinois, Wisconsin andMichigan as well as in other regions of our great organization. Thank you Jim. In 2014, we also saw the retirement of Kathryn Rosypal, who dependently servicedthe PRCUA in a professional manner as Executive Editor of Narod Polski and head of thePublications Department for 25 years. Lidia Kowalewicz, PRCUA’s Managing Editor ofNarod Polski for 20 years, smoothly stepped into that demanding position. With Lidia’sextensive media experience, we know our publication is in good hands. Thank you Kathryn and Lidia.Our Building and Properties: With the historical designation of our Home Office building and its age of more than100 years, it is our responsibility to maintain, repair and improve its appearance andfunctionality. With the cooperation and joint effort of the Polish Museum of America, our buildinghas, since January 2014, a formal first floor entrance on Milwaukee and Augusta, towelcome all visitors to the PRCUA and the PMA with a modern, professional look. Nolonger do we have visitors entering our building from the parking lot side deliveryentrance. Our new entrance has greatly enhanced the image of both institutions, now greetingour guests and visitors with a beautiful lobby and an impressive Museum Gift Shop. In our building, over the last four years we have improved the HVAC, plumbing, andelectrical wiring, bringing these issues up to standard. We have also rebuilt andreconditioned the elevator. We have installed new carpeting throughout our second floor work area and addedmore efficient work stations for our employees and provided them with improvedcomputer capabilities. We have secured the property inside and outside with security lights and cameras.We are fully integrated with the Internet and Cloud services. We are ready to embracenew advancements in Information Technologies that will provide the means to betterserve you, our members. Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner honoredwith the Amicus Poloniae Award

Paulina Kapuścińska, Polish Consul General in Chicagopresented Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner with the AmicusPoloniae Award on behalf of the Polish Ambassador to the UnitedStates Ryszard Schnepf in recognition of Governor Rauner’scooperation with the Polish-American community of Illinois. The Amicus Poloniae Award was established in 1996 by theAmbassador of the Republic of Poland in Washington D.C. Thehonor is conferred annually upon citizens of the United States ofAmerica for their contributions to the advancement of the Polish-U.S. relations. The Latin phrase Amicus Poloniae denotes a ‘Friendof Poland’ whose understanding of the communities helps toadvance relations between people. The award ceremony took place during the Annual Gala of thePolish American Medical Society - 65th Physicians' Ball, at the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago on January 31, 2015 . The event was attendedby close to 500 guests, mostly medical doctors, members of thePolish American Medical Society and students of medical sciences.

Kasimer Zabek1929 - 2015

Adams, MA - It is our sad duty toinform you that Kasimer Zabek(85), Past PRCUA District #1National Director, President ofPRCUA St. Michael's Society, anactive member and deputy, passedaway on Sunday, February 15,2015 at Berkshire Medical Center

in Pittsfield, MA. Kasimer Joseph “Casey” Zabek was born in Adams onDec. 31, 1929, a son of the late Joseph and Angela (nee Pater)Zabek. He attended Adams schools and graduated from theformer Adams High School with the Class of 1948. “Kaz” - as he was affectionately called - was a proudPolish American. He treasured his Polish roots and took everyopportunity to promote Polish heritage. A natural leader, Kazsupported the PRCUA with great dedication and enthusiasm,serving as President of PRCUA St. Michael's Society for over25 years. He also served as Supervisor of PRCUA InsuranceDistrict #56 and was PRCUA National Director of District #1for sixteen years (1982-90 and 2002-10). Kasimer Zabek is survived by his wife of 64 years, FriedaJ. (nee Czubryt), whom he married on Sept. 3, 1951; 2 sons,David (Joan) Zabek of Bristol, CT; and Thomas (Charlene)Zabek of St. Johnsbury, VT; 4 daughters, Bonnie Zabek ofPeru; Susan (Thomas) McShane of Stamford, VT; NancyHerlihy of Pittsfield, and Mary Ellen Daigneault and herfiancee, Michael Graves, of Adams; 1 sister, FlorenceRomaniak; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Friday, Feb. 20th with a Liturgyof Christian Burial held at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, inAdams, MA, celebrated by the Rev. Steven Montesanti, Pastor.He was laid to rest at St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery. Please remember Mr. Zabek and his family in yourprayers. Polish Language Classes at PRCUA

Chicago, IL - On February 3, 2015 classes in ConversationalPolish at the Beginner Level started at the PRCUA. Classes meet every Tuesday evening and are taught by anAccredited Polish Language Teacher, Halina Szyrzyna. Of the16 students in the class, three are new members of thePRCUA! The others are PRCUA employees who wish toimprove their Polish language skills. This pilot program will extend to the end of May.

Depending on where you live, the weather in February was the topic. For example, as the Midwest andEast Coast battled below zero temperatures and snow blizzards – Florida basked in temps ranging from highsin the mid-70s to lows in the 50s. Don’t get me started about the weather in Phoenix where Cole (mygrandson) reports that the mercury hit the 80s quite often although there were some days that were in the 70s.I would have felt his pain if I wasn’t so numbed by the freezing temperatures. Since the prognosis for theMidwestern and Eastern U.S. is below average temps through March, our very ambitious PRCUA “moversand shakers” will be providing many events where we can gather and stay warm. Consider this yourpersonal invitation to attend the PRCUA events closest to you – please check the Calendar of Events on p. 2for details. There are events celebrating St. Patty’s Day, St. Joseph Day, and others for “fashionistas” as wellas athletes! Drobot, Richard and I attended the 22nd “Studniówka” - astudents’ ball comparable to the prom in the U.S. for thesenior class of Polish language high schools. Heldapproximately a hundred days before the final exam or“matura”, this ball was organized by the Polish TeachersAssociation (PTA) of America (Ewa Koch is the President)in the main ballroom of Oak Brook Drury Lane Theatre inIllinois. Each year, one of the 35 Polish schools in theChicagoland area host the event and this year, the Gen.Tadeusz Kościuszko Polish School did the honors. SchoolDirector, Urszula Gawlik, and the Parents’ Club President,Agata Kowalkowska, welcomed the guests. For the first

time, the Polonia Ensemble of PRCUA (Anna Krysinski, Director) performed at theBall which included a mini-musical about the importance of attending Polishschool outside of Poland, a tribute to General Kościuszko, a fiery Mazur and a Rock ‘n Roll number. Many ofour PRCUA members attend Polish high schools including those subsidized by the PRCUA FraternalDepartment: St. Rafal Kalinowski, Maria Konopnicka and John Paul II. President Drobot captivated theaudience of close to 600 soon-to-be graduates in both the Polish and English languages. Of the manyhonored guests invited to this elegant event were: the Most Rev. Andrew Wypych, Auxiliary Bishop of

Chicago; Konrad Zielinski, ViceConsul Consulate General of theRepublic of Poland in Chicago;Teresa Abick, Vice President ofthe PNA; and Anna Sokolowski,Vice President Emeritus ofPRCUA. With the formal portionof the Ball complete, the socialportion commenced with thetraditional Polonaise led by thePolonia Ensemble, honored guestsand graduates-to be and then thereal party got under way!Congratulations to all those who

made this evening a “night to remember”! Our “Polish for Americans” classes began on Tuesday, February 3, and at the request of the Instructor,Halina Szyrzyna, is perfect at 16 students! We welcome our three new PRCUA members: Tony Kowal, PeggyBurita, and Edwin Korczynski! The remainder of the class is comprised of PRCUA employees who are nowusing their new Polishphrases at the Office. Weencourage others to start a“Polish for Americans”class in their area. On Sunday, February 15, 2015, the Executive Officers andtheir spouses participated in the District 8 Valentine Luncheonwhere this year’s Sweetheart was PRCUA VP Emeritus, AnnaSokolowski. I might add that theprogram selections, from dances to songs, were coordinated byRichard Jaminski all with special meaning to Mrs. Sokolowski –thus dances from Warsaw, her birthplace; her favorite flower isthe poppy which is mentioned in her favorite song Polskie Kwiaty;leaving her homeland was bittersweet thus, the Polonaiseentitled Farewell to the Fatherland; the end of something enjoyablewas sad as in the song Pożegnanie Góralskie but “dreams” give theimpetus to move forward as in the waltz Nasze Sny, and last butnot least dances and songs from Spisz – it’s her favorite dancesuite. The Shirley Ann Galanty Michigan State Ball in Troy, MIwas an enchanting occasion prepared by a fantastic group ofindividuals on behalf of an even more amazing group of youngadults. I felt as if I was at Fashion Week in Paris with all thebeautiful gowns and elegant evening attire adorning theballroom. And the models – I mean, Graduates and their escorts– très élégant! On behalf of the Officers and our spouses, I wouldlike to thank Kelly Malinowski, Choreographer of the “ShirleyBall”, D-10 Directors Colleen Bonkowski and Tom Lisiecki,School Directors and Dance Instructors for coordinating the Balland for the opportunity to “Meet and Greet” the Graduates.Speaking with these PRCUA young people, the ExecutiveOfficers and their spouses agreed that we “are in good hands” asthey get ready to take on the challenges of the world. What a Small World!On a recent visit to

Park City, Utah, toattend the 2015Sundance FilmFestival, PRCUAmember Mark Ozog(son of PresidentEmeritus, WallaceOzog, and his FirstLady, Joann) metanother PRCUAmember, SharonStencel (daughter ofpast PRCUAConvention Co-Chairand Officer of #1593,Julius Szymczyk).They reminisced about

growing up in Warren, Michigan; Polish dancing in PRCUA, discussedfamily, food and a visit to Poland! It was like they knew each other foreverand all because of their backgrounds – and being POLISH was one of them!In fact, one of Sharon’s great friends was also Mark’s first Polish danceinstructor when he was four years old! Ironically, this same person was hislast instructor as well since he danced with the Wawel Folk Ensemble whenhe went to Poland at age 17.This dance instructor is noneother than the remarkableDonna Skurski! Plans were made to meetfor lunch and reminisce somemore. After lunch which wasat an old time saloon, theyvisited the Utah OlympicCenter (40% of the Olympicvenues from the 2002 WinterOlympics were held in ParkCity which is about 40 mileseast of Salt Lake City). Sharonmet a couple of Mark’s filmfriends when she was kindenough to drive them to theairport for their flight back toCalifornia. “Dziekuje!” What a small world fortwo PRCUA members, FROMTHE SAME SOCIETY, to meet so far away from their hometown of Warren,Michigan!

Gwiazda DancersJanuary and Early-February Happenings

Warren, MI - On Friday, January 30, 2015, the PRCUA Gwiazda Dancers hostedtheir annual bowling fundraiser at Regal Lanes in Warren, Michigan. The event was wellattended by Gwiazda’s supporters. In addition to bowling, the event featured Tin-CanRaffles, with prizes donated from the dancers’ families and from area businesses, theMystery Game and a Share-the-Wealth Raffle. Proceeds from the event will go toGwiazda’s costume fund and to help defray the group’s operational costs.

d d d On Saturday, February 14,2015, members of the GwiazdaDancers participated in the Cityof Hamtramck’s annual CountDown to Pączki Day event. The event kicked off with a5k Run through the streets ofHamtramck with over 1000runners participating. Despitesub-zero wind chills, membersof the Gwiazda Dancers stood atthe starting gate in Polish folkdress to cheer on the runners. After the Run, the GwiazdaDancers took to the stage(thankfully in a heated tent) toperform somePolish nationaland regionaldances, as well asa few polkas aspart of the event.The program alsofeatured themusical stylingsof the MistyBlues Polkaband, as well asfree Pączki forattendees fromvarious Hamtramck and other Metro Detroitarea bakeries. Gwiazda has a busy schedule for thenext several months with performances at thethe Detroit Pistons Polish Heritage Night, theAmerican Polish Cultural Center’s AnnualPolish Folk Dance Festival and the group’sannual spring recital.

Sports fans enjoyedthe football and baseball gamesplaying on the flat screens. The PRCUA is happy announcethat Jacob Borowicz was selected asthe winner of an Apple iPad Mini -the Grand Prize in the PRCUA 2014Christmas Special. The prize drawingtook place on February 2, 2015. Jacob is the son of John andHilary Borowicz, both lifetimemembers of PRCUA Society #162 inWyandotte, Michigan. His member-ship in the PRCUA was a gift fromhis grandparents, Ted and PauletteBorowicz. Jacob loves his grandparents (Gigi and Papa)very much and loves spending time with them. Jacobattends preschool at St. Pius X School in Southgate,Michigan, where his brothers John and Alex attend gradeschool. Jacob is very active and loves swimming andplaying Legos with his brothers. He will be in kindergartennext year and is very excited to attend school with hisbrothers and finally receive "homework" like them! He is afun-loving little boy who always has a smile on his face!

Hickory Hills, IL – PRCUA District 8 hosted a Valentine Luncheon on Sunday, February 15,2015 in the beautifully decorated main ballroom of Camelot Banquets in Hickory Hills, IL. Thisyear’s event honored PRCUA’s Vice President Emeritus Anna Sokolowski (2002-2014). National Director and President of PRCUA District 8 James Rustik welcomed those inattendance and PRCUA Secretary-Treasurer James Robaczewski said grace before the meal. After adelicious dinner with homemade pączki for dessert, Dir. Rustik introduced PRCUA NationalPresident Joseph A. Drobot, Jr. He and his wife, Judy, drove from Michigan through a blizzard tohonor Mrs. Sokolowski, with whom he had worked closely in the main office for four years. Then District 8 National Director and Vice President Krystyna Lech emceed the artisticprogram coordinated by Richard Jaminski and performed by various groups from District 8. Theprogram commenced with a waltz and polka from Old Warsaw performed by PRCUA Wesoly Luddancers, Camilla Steczek and Kacper Szumiec (Director, Richard Jaminski; Choreography by M.Jaminski). Młody LUDek from the PRCUA Southwest Center of Polish Dancing performed a dancemedley from the region of Kaszuby (Managing Director, Ania Kraszewski; Artistic Director andChoreographer, Richard Jaminski; Dance Instructor, Michael Dziadkowiec). From the MariaKonopnicka Polish School of PRCUA (Director, Stanisław Skubisz; President, Sylwia McHenry)student Anna Nowobilska beautifully sang “Polskie kwiaty.” This was followed by a piano-violinduet “Pożegnanie ojczyzny” Ogińskiego by Julia Miazek and Alan Królikowski respectively. Then,together with brother Piotr, Anna Nowobilska sang “Góralskie pożegnanie.” Alicia Kaleta, 2015Cinderella, and her Prince Charming, Alexander Łabudzki, elegantly performed a waltz “Nasze Sny”(Edward Muszalski, President of the M. Konopnicka Adult Culture Group; Choreography: M.Jaminski). The conclusion of the artistic program was a suite of dances and songs from the region ofSpisz performed by the PRCUA Wesoły Lud Polish Folk Dance Company (Artistic Director andChoreographer, Richard Jaminski). Mrs. Sokolowski was presented with flowers, chocolates, a photo book and accolades by thefour dance instructors who completed the Choreographers’ Course in Rzeszów, Poland: AndrewLech, on behalf of himself and Renee Bober-Kroplewski, Kalina Dziadkowiec-Gorczyca, andNatalia Grabowski; 2015 Cinderella and Prince Charming on behalf of the M. Konopnicka AdultCulture Group; students from the Maria Konopnicka Polish School; Ania Kraszewski and AnnetteNowakowski of the PRCUA Southwest Center of Polish Dancing; PRCUA National Vice PresidentMicheline Jaminski on behalf of the PRCUA and PRCUA’s Wesoły Lud. After reading the honoree’s biography, Dir. Rustik and Dir. Lech then presented Mrs.Sokolowski with flowers and a vase engraved with: “Congratulations and Best Wishes from District8, its officers and its groups.” The festivities concluded with Mrs. Sokolowski expressing thanks and appreciation to herhusband, Mark, her family, the Vice Presidents from two other fraternals - Mrs. Sharon Zago andMr. Paul Odrobina and his wife Janice, her Executive Assistant Mary Jane Robles, “IT Wizard”Kevin Ryba, as well as past and present officers of District 8 and past and present national officers ofthe PRCUA. Mrs. Sokolowski is the ninth “Sweetheart” honored by District 8, which previously honoredRegina Ocwieja (PRCUA VP 1982-1990); Past Directors Martha Kwiatt and Clara Winiecki; as wellas Bernice Hyatt, Sue Buras, Michaeline Drust, Mary Brzezniak and Diane Cortesi.

Chicago, IL - Every year, PRCUAand PMA officers and employeesobserve the traditions of Fat Tuesdayand Ash Wednesday. On Tuesday, February 17,employees were treated to deliciouspączki on the occasion of Fat Tuesdayand the last day of Carnival. February 18th, PRCUA and PMAstaff gathered in the hallway of theMain Office to receive ashes on AshWednesday. This year, Rev. AndrzejMaślejak, SCh, Pastor of Holy TrinityMission in Chicago was present tooffer prayers and sprinkleour foreheads with ashes onthis first day of the Lentenseason. Fr. Maślejak, waswelcomed by PRCUAPresident Joseph A. Drobot,who also read the FirstReading in English. TheSecond Reading was readby PRCUA VP MichelineJaminski in Polish.

Secretary-Treasurer JamesRobaczewski read the Psalm.

In a short Homily Fr.Maślejak reminded everyonethat Lent is a time of penanceand conversion, fasting,prayer and charity.

EASTER RYEMEAL SOUP (żurek wielkanocny): In pot combine 2to 2 ½ c diced smoked kielbasa, ham and/or roast pork, 6 c water, 1quartered onion and several peppercorns. Simmer on low, covered,1 hr. Stir in 1 c ryemeal sour* (żur liquid - available bottled at Polishdelis), 1 c water in which 1 heaping T flour has been dissolved and¼ of a mushroom bouillon cube. Bring to boil, reduce heat andsimmer 2-3 min. Turn off heat, add 1-2 buds crushed garlic, 1heaping t prepared horseradish and 1 T marjoram. Stir, and salt &pepper to taste. Serve over cut-up hard-boiled eggs.

HOT STUFFED EGGS (IN SHELLS) (jaja faszerowane wskorupkach): Although a bit involved, this is a fantastic Easter dishwell worth the effort! Cook hard-boiled eggs allowing 1-2 per guest.Start with 8-10 cold, hard-boiled eggs with the shells on. Hold eachegg firmly against cutting-board and tap it lengthwise with a sharp,thin-bladed, non-serrated-edge knife. With swift cutting motion cutthrough the egg, shell and all. With small spoon gently scoop outyolk and white and set aside, taking care not to break the shell.Carefully remove and discard and loose, jagged shell fragmentsthat adhere to eggs or the rim of shells. Set shells aside. Simmer 2finely minced onions in 2 T butter until tender and golden. Grind orchop eggs fine and combine with onion. Add 1 - 2 heaping T finelychopped fresh dill, 1 heaping T finely chopped chives and salt &pepper to taste. Mix ingredients well. (Optional: Work 1 T sourcream into mixture.) Fill shells with mixture, pressing it down verygently so as not the damage the shells. Sprinkle tops generouslywith bread crumbs, pressing crumbs in gently. To serve, fry stuffedeggs, crumb-side down in 2 T butter or margarine until a golden-brown crust forms and the shells are hot to the touch. Serveimmediately.

FRESH BAKED KIEŁBASA (biała kiełbasa pieczona): Arrangefresh kiełbasa in a single layer in uncovered baking pan. Cover withcold water and bake in 350° oven. Turn sausage over when half thewater has evaporated. Scatter wafer-thin onion slices on top andsprinkle with caraway seed. It is ready when all the waterevaporates and sausage begins to sizzle. Variation: At the start ofcooking, replace 1 c of water with beer.

KIEŁBASA & SAUERKRAUT (kiełbasa z kapustą): Drain 2 - 3 qtssauerkraut. If very sour, rinse in cold water and drain again. Pressout moisture in colander, chop coarsely, place in pot, scald withboiling water to cover, add 1 bay leaf and cook uncovered 45 min.Intersperse about 2 lbs smoked or cooked fresh kiełbasa cut into 2½- 3” pieces, sprinkle with ½ t caraway seed and cook, covered, atleast 1 hr longer on low. After turning off heat, let stand at least 20minutes before serving. It’ll be even better reheated the next day!

EASY EASTER BABKA (babka wielkanocna łatwiejsza): Dissolve 1pkg. active dry yeast in 1 c very warm milk. Stir in 3/4 c. butter untilmelted. Add 1 c sugar, 3 beaten whole eggs, 3 c flour, 1 t vanillaextract and ½ c raisins. Mix well to blend ingredients, but do notknead. Fill well-greased babka pan with dough; pan should be only⅓ full. Cover with cloth and let stand in warm place until doubledin bulk (about 2 hrs). Bake about 1 hr in preheated 350° oven. It isfully baked when a wooden pick comes out clean. Dust withconfectioner’s sugar or glaze with icing (mix ⅔ c confectioner’ssugar, 1 t rum or vanilla extract and 2-3 T boiling water).

CRUMBLE-TOP FRUIT MAZURKA (mazurek owocowy zkruszonką): Cut ½ lb butter into 3 c flour, add 4 egg yolks and 1scant c confectioner’s sugar. Quickly work ingredients into asmooth dough, wrap in foil and refrigerate several hours. Dividedough into 2 parts. Roll out one half and fit it into square orrectangular baking pan. Spread with powidła (prune jam) or otherthick jam. Coarsely grate the remaining dough over jam, evenlycovering the entire surface. Bake in preheated 390°-400° oven about20 min or until nice and golden. When cool, cut into squares.

Back to the Basics of the Holy Season of Lent

This year, the entire month of March is taken upwith the Holy Season of Lent as we prepare for the mostimportant Feast: Easter. In Polish it is called Wielki Postwhich is translated as the “Great Fast” as it is the mostimportant fast of the entire year. Lent runs from AshWednesday until the beginning of the Mass of theLord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. In order to make thisLent more meaningful, it might be helpful to go to the basics of Lent. The Catholic Ordo (which is a yearly book published to help guideliturgical celebrations) uses this quote about Lent: “The annual observance ofLent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter.Through its twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lentdisposes both the catechumen (those preparing to enter the Church at theEaster Vigil) and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. Catechumensare led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, thescrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word ofGod and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit ofrepentance to renew their baptismal promises.” Traditionally, there are three disciplines that are associated with Lent:Prayer, Fasting and Giving Alms. These three disciplines cause us to lookbeyond ourselves to a greater good. Prayer deepens our relationship with theLord. Fasting helps us to focus our attention away from our own wants anddesires. Giving alms reminds us that others are in need and, as followers ofChrist, we are to show them His love and compassion. These disciplines can be a very practical guide for us during the season ofLent. Many times, we may not even think about practicing all three disciplinesduring Lent because it seems so many of us get caught in the trap of thinkingabout fasting, the “what can I give up” frenzy that often becomes associatedwith Lent. While fasting or abstaining from something we really like duringLent can be helpful in our growth in holiness, so too prayer and giving alms -which includes giving of ourselves - can be equally or even more important forour spiritual growth. Sometimes prayer and almsgiving can be harder for usthan anything we may have chosen to give up. Here are some practical examples for putting into practice thesedisciplines. In the area of prayer, consider praying the Stations of the Cross atyour Parish during Lent or attending a daily Mass. In the area of fasting,abstain from snacking between meals during the entire season of Lent. If thatseems too daunting, pick a specific day of the week to do so. In the area ofgiving alms, write a check to your favorite charity, especially if that charityserves the Poor or make a visit to someone who is in a nursing home orhospital. While these may seem to be insignificant, they are all signs of thebeginning of an internal conversion, of which, Lent is all about. The Church offers us these threedisciplines in her wisdom and herconcern for our spiritual growth. I aminclined to think that these threedisciplines work together, in harmony,to help us on not only our LentenJourney but also on our journeytoward genuine holiness. To pick onlyone and exclude the others may domore harm than good, causing animbalance in our spiritual growth. As we walk through the season ofLent during this month of March, letus pray for each other that we make progress in spiritual growth in holiness byprayer, fasting and giving alms, returning to the basic of the Lenten Season, aswe ascend “the Holy mountain of Easter.”

Doroczna zabawa karnawałowa w Polskiej Szkole im. Św. Rafała Kalinowskiego

W przedostatniąsobotę karnawału, 7 lutego2015 roku, w PolskiejSzkole im. Świętego RafałaKalinowskiego w Munster,IN odbyła się tradycyjnazabawa szkolna, którązaszczycili swojąobecnością między innymip r z e d s t a w i c i e l eZjednoczenia PolskiegoRzymsko-Katolickiego wAmeryce, które jestsponsorem naszej szkoły.Byli to wiceprezes p.Micheline Jamiński zmałżonkiem, dyrektorDystryktu 9 PRCUA paniElizabeth Sadus, pani BarbaraPawlowski i Paul Pawlowski. Po powitaniu przybyłychgości, przedstawione zostałogrono pedagogiczne szkołyoraz członkowie Zarządu. Część artystyczną zabawywypełniły występynajmłodszych uczniów (odprzedszkola do klasy 4), którzyco sobotę uczą się w szkolepolskich tańców narodowych iludowych. Najpierw zobaczyliśmyprzedszkolaków, którzy przebrani zakrasnoludków wystąpili w inscenizacjiznanej piosenki „My jesteśmykrasnoludki”. Występy taneczne, jak nakazujepolska tradycja, rozpoczęły siępolonezem w wykonaniu uczniów klasy1. Następnie zbójnickiego, zprawdziwymi góralskimi ciupagami,zatańczyli uczniowie klasy 3. Z koleiklasa 4 pokazała, jak na Śląsku tańczy siętrojaka. Na zakończenie zobaczyliśmyuczniów zerówki, którzy zatańczylimazura, do którego dziewczynkiwystąpiły w pięknych długichsukniach z pięknie upiętymiwłosami. Wszystkie występy zostałynagrodzone rzęsistymi oklaskami. Po pamiątkowym zdjęciu maliartyści udali się do swoich klas napizzę, a goście mieli możliwośćpoznania najstarszych uczniówszkoły - tegorocznych maturzystów,którzy za swoją wytrwałość iświetne wyniki w nauce otrzymali,ufundowane prze Zarząd szkoły,pamiątkowe statuetki. Potem już goście zostali zaproszeni do obiadu, który rozpoczął się modlitwą naszychOjców Karmelitów. Jeszcze w czasie trwania obiadu, DJ Marecki grający w tym roku u nas po raz pierwszy,zaprosił dzieci do wspólnej zabawy. Potem przy różnych rytmach i melodiach świetniebawili się wszyscy aż do północy. Tradycyjna loteria fantowa była w tym roku bardzo obfita, więc większość gościwychodziła z zabawy, niosąc swoje wygrane. Dziękując serdecznie wszystkim, którzy pomogli przy zorganizowaniu naszej zabawy,głównie zarządowi szkoły, nauczycielom przygotowującym występy taneczne dzieci orazrodzicom naszych uczniów, zapraszamy już teraz na przyszłoroczną zabawę. Szósta niedziela Wielkiego Postu nazywana jest Niedzielą Palmową,czyli Męki Pańskiej, i rozpoczyna obchody Wielkiego Tygodnia. W tymdniu Kościół wspomina wjazd Chrystusa do Jerozolimy. Niedziela Palmowa jest jednym z najstarszych świąt w tradycjiKościoła, znanych już w IV w. Źródłem tego święta stał się, opisywanyprzez Ewangelistów, uroczysty wjazd Chrystusa do Jerozolimy. WedługBiblii, mieszkańcy miasta witali Jezusa krzycząc „Hosanna SynowiDawidowemu” i rzucając gałązki palmowe na drogę. Tradycyjnie, w ten dzień, podczas Mszy św. odbywa się święceniepalm a następnie wierni udają się na procesję. Polskie palmy wielkanocneprzygotowuje się z gałązek wierzby, która w symbolice kościoła jestznakiem zmartwychwstania i nieśmiertelności duszy. W wierzbowegałązki wplatane są gałązki bukszpanu, barwinka, borówki, cisu, widłaka

i ozdabiane są żywymi lub wykonanymi z bibułki kwiatami.W Polsce w wielu regionach w dniu tym

odbywają się konkursy na najpiękniejszą palmę. WKalwarii Zebrzydowskiej inscenizuje się wjazdChrystusa na osiołku do miasta. W niektórychpowiatach przetrwała także tradycja tak zwanychprocesji z Jezuskiem Palmowym, które polegają naobwożeniu na osiołku figury Chrystusa po wiosce.

Zespół Pieśni i Tańca „Polonia” na Studniówce 2015

Jednym z najciekawszych punktów w programie tegorocznej Studniówki, która odbyłasię 31 stycznia w Oak Brook Terrace, IL, stał się pokazowy koncert Zespołu Pieśni i Tańca„Polonia”, Zjednoczenia Polskiego Rzymsko-Katolickiego w Ameryce, który zostałzaproszony po raz pierwszy w historii tradycji istnienia tej imprezy. Zespół „Polonia”stworzony został prawie 30 lat temu przez Cecylię Rożnowską, weterankę spośród grupyniewielu Polaków na obczyźnie, którzy swoją wszechstronną wiedzą oraz patriotycznąpostawą potrafili zapisać w historii i wejść w poczet osób, którzy swoje życie poświeciliprzekazywaniu następnym pokoleniom polskich tradycji, obyczajów i krzewieniu polskiejkultury. Razem z córką Anną Krysińską oraz, dziś także wnuczką, Jaclyn Krysińskiinstruktorem i choreografem, kontynuują rozpoczęte przed wielu laty dzieło krzewieniapolskości tak, aby przetrwało próbę czasu.

Tancerze, do występu naStudniówce przygotowywali siębardzo intensywnie biorąc poduwagę i dopracowywując każdyszczegół. Dla podniesienia ważnościoraz unikalności uroczystości zespółzaprezentował taniec narodowymazur w oryginalnych ułańskichmundurach i zwiewnych,tradycyjnych sukniach. Klasycznywystrój sali bankietowej Drury Lanew Oabrook, sceneriamonumentalnych kryształowychżyrandoli i niebosiężnych sufitówdodawały magicznego uroku iwprowadzały w awangardowąatmosferę historycznych,zamożnych balów szlacheckich. Niezabrakło również symbolicznegoPoloneza, którego kroki i figuryzostaly sumiennie wyćwiczone zmłodzieżą klas licealnych szkoły T.

Prezentacja wypadła na medal, tancerze „Polonii” oraz młodzież szkolna tańczyliz godziwym szykiem i doniosłą powagą jak przystało prawdziwej polskiej, młodocianejszlachcie, a kiedy wodzirej (DJ) odegrał Poloneza po raz drugi, do tańca stanęli równieżzaproszeni goście. Taneczny korowód pierwszą parą rozpoczęli; konsul RP w ChicagoKonrad Zieliński, następnie Ewa Koch, prezes Zrzeszenia Nauczycieli Polskich w Ameryce,Urszula Gawli - dyrektor szkoły im T. Kościuszki, Teresa Abick, wiceprezes ZwiązkuNarodowego Polskiego, a także przedstawiciele Zjednoczenia Polskiego Rzymsko-Katolickiego w Ameryce – prezes Joseph Drobot wraz z małżonką, wiceprezes MichelineJamiński z mężem oraz Anna Sokołowska, była wiceprezes Zjednoczenia. Przewodzenie takiej potężnej formacji z ogromną ilością par tancerzy nie było wcaleproste. Jednak temu zadaniu podołała choreograf artystyczny Iwona Puc, która od wielu latwspółpracuje z zespołem „Polonia” przygotowując grupę do historycznych układówscenicznych. Pani Iwona Puc, posiadająca szerokie doświadczenie nie tylko taneczne, jesttakże wszechstronnym koneserem polskości, sztuki historycznej oraz autorką scenkiaktorskiej, która została zaprezentowana na Studniówce przed mazurem. Goście balu ilicealiści z zaciekawieniem przysłuchiwali się dialogom aktorów, którzy (pół żartem, półserio) odtworzyli charakterystyczny wizerunek typowego, sobotniego, przed szkolnegoporanka w rytmach muzyki rap. Scenkę zakończyła deklamacja samego Kościuszki, któregopostać uosobowił Wojciech Zebala zakańczając przedstawienie zejściem z parkietu wtowarzystwie, wyposażonych w prawdziwe kosy kosynierów. Publiczność studniówkowamiała możliwość podziwiania jeszcze skocznego rock-and-rolla, który tancerze z zespołu„Polonia” zaprezentowali nieco później.
