Convocation Proceedings Explanatory notes for persons performing official acts during the ceremony 10.00 am Pro-Chancellor enters the auditorium and joins procession
group. On arrival on stage, all stand in front of seat. All remain standing for the National Anthem. After National Anthem is played
Pro-Chancellor Still standing and using microphone, says:
I declare open a Convocation for the presentation of higher degree graduates and graduates of the Degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese, English, History and Linguistics & Multilingual Studies.
All sit. Except for the Pro-Chancellor, all remove caps.
1 Introduction of Speaker Prof Luke Kang Kwong Kapathy
Rises, puts on cap, advances to microphone A. Bows to Pro-Chancellor and introduces Prof Wang Gungwu ending with the words:
Professor Wang will now address us.
Bows to Pro-Chancellor and returns to seat. Removes cap.
2 Speech Prof Wang Gungwu Rises, puts on cap, advances to microphone B.
Bows to Pro-Chancellor and delivers speech beginning with the words:

Mr Pro-Chancellor, graduates, ladies and gentlemen…
At the end of speech, bows to Pro-Chancellor and returns to seat. Removes cap. (Pause for applause to die down.)
3 Presentation of Certificate of Appreciation Prof Luke Kang Kwong

Rises, puts on cap, advances to microphone A. Bows to Pro-Chancellor and says:
Mr Pro-Chancellor, may I invite you to present, on behalf of the University, a Certificate of Appreciation to our Guest Speaker, Professor Wang Gungwu.
Prof Wang Gungwu Rises, puts on cap and walks towards Pro-Chancellor.
Pro-Chancellor Stands. Shakes hands and presents Certificate. Returns to seat.
Prof Wang Gungwu Bows to Pro-Chancellor and returns to seat. Removes cap.

Assoc Prof Tan Ying Ying The valedictorian, Ms Marylyn Tan Ruilin, will now give her speech.
Bows to Pro-Chancellor and returns to seat. Removes cap.
11 Appreciation to Parents & Families Valedictorian Proceeds on stage to microphone B and delivers a short speech.
At the end of the speech, asks all graduates to stand and give a round of applause to show their appreciation to their parents and families. Pauses for applause to die down. Requests all graduates to be
seated. Bows to Pro-Chancellor and returns to seat.
12 End of Proceedings Pro-Chancellor Stands and says:

I declare this Convocation closed. Remains standing. All on stage stand, replace caps and await the National Anthem (abridged version). Processional music follows after the National Anthem.
Pro-Chancellor
Leads procession out of Hall. Descends by the staircase on his left (facing audience). Members of the procession retire in reverse order of entry and
will then adjourn for the reception.

Explanatory Notes to All Members of the Academic Procession Time of Arrival Morning Session Afternoon Session Evening Session Pro-Chancellor 9.40 am 1.40 pm 5.40 pm Guest speaker 9.35 am 1.35 pm 5.35 pm All other members 9.30 am 1.30 pm 5.30 pm Academic Dress Academic dress will be worn for the ceremony by all persons forming the processional groups. The University will provide caps and gowns for members of the procession
where necessary. Members of the procession are welcome to bring your own cap and gown. Caps should be worn while in procession. Caps will be removed as soon as the assembly is seated (except for the Pro-Chancellor and the graduates). They will be replaced thereafter whenever the assembly stands (e.g. for the National Anthem) and after the Pro-Chancellor has declared the Convocation closed. Caps will be worn by officials when performing their duties during the ceremony. Robing Room The robing room is located at the Blue Room / Crimson Room, Basement Level. Procession Order All members are to be robed and ready by 9.50 am / 1.50 pm / 5.50 pm. At 9.50 am / 1.50 pm / 5.50 pm, members will be called into line. The Procession will be marshalled in two files and proceed to Foyer 1. The entire procession will enter the auditorium at 10.00 am / 2.00 pm / 6.00 pm.
There will be a slight gap between groups. On reaching the front of the auditorium near the stage, the procession will branch off to the LEFT and RIGHT and then proceed to the seats on stage. The Pro-Chancellor will proceed up the stage by the RIGHT staircase.

Appreciation to Parents & Families A valedictorian will proceed on stage to microphone B and deliver a short speech. At the end of the speech he/she will ask all graduates to stand up and give a round of applause to show their appreciation to their parents and families. Conclusion of Ceremony After the Convocation is declared closed, members will replace caps, stand for the National Anthem and remain standing in preparation to leave the auditorium. The procession will be led out of the auditorium, with the Pro-Chancellor using the right staircase. All other processional groups will retrace their steps and leave in reverse order of entry.
* At the beginning of ceremony, Pro-Chancellor to move up the stage using the right staircase. When leaving the auditorium, Pro-Chancellor to use the right staircase. Reception Members of the procession are cordially invited to join the reception after the ceremony. Members of the procession are encouraged to keep your ceremonial gowns on during the reception and mingle with the graduates. Please return the gowns to the respective robing rooms not later than 12.30 pm / 4.30 pm / 8.30 pm.
