ORVIETO LIBRARYTHIRD YEAR
The aim of this project was to design a religious l ibrary in the heart of medieval Orvieto. Orvieto sits on the flat top of a volcanic tuff rock. It is home to many narrow streets that lead to large open piazzas. The two contrasting spaces became the driving force for the concept of the design of this project. The site is surrounded by tall medieval residential buildings and it boasts scenic views of the mountainous countryside. Taking heed of Orvieto’s towers, the library was designed to house a study tower that would take full advantage of the surrounding views.

AMSTERDAMSECOND YEAR
The description for this project called for a place of work to be designed. It was to house a dynamic business focussed upon making ‘something’. What the building ‘made’ was to be chosen after visiting Amsterdam.Upon visiting Amsterdam, it was discovered that many public buildings, both new and old, contained rather unsual and artististic l ight fittings. It was therefore decided to have the building make light fittings. The site of the building is located on a canal water front on Prince Island. The island was developed in the seventeeth century and at the time was used to store timber. For this reason, I chose the light fittings to also be made of wood. When desigining this building, it was in mind to ‘tread lightly’ on site. As well as this there happened to be a tree. The building was designed around the tree.

BRADGATE PARKSECOND YEAR
The brief of this project required two buildings to be designed in Leicester’s Bradgate Park - a public park in Charnwood Forest. The first building is a study centre specialising in geological studies. The second is a residential building for those studying to stay. The site of the residential building sat on a very steep hil l. The solution for this was to design into the hil l which allowed the building’s shape to following the natural contour l ines of the hil l.The study building was also designed to reflect the natural contour of its surroundings allowing both buildings to nestle neatly in the park without looking conspicuous.

LEICESTER MARKETSECOND YEAR
This project required an understanding of Leicester Outdoor Market. Measured plans, sections and elevation drawings were to be taken of Leicester Market. The drawings were required to be produced by hand. The brief then called for an ‘Intervention’ – a new addition to the market. The nature of the addition was to be based upon an evaluation of what the markets ‘needs’. The addition should be small.

LONDON ROADFIRST YEAR
The brief required the design of a house for clients Murdo and Alessandra. Murdo is a lecturer of archeology who also plays in a jazz trio and requires a space to practise. Alessandra is a private yoga instructor who works from home. She is also an art photographer with a large collection of art prints. She will require a dark room and studio space to fulfi l her hobby. The clients are a couple in their late thirties who have a daughter, aged 3. They require good spaces for entertaining and cooking and also want a guest bedroom and bathroom. An outdoor space is vital for them. The site is quite narrow and sits on Leicester’s London Road between both commercial and residential properties.
