This review should be one of theeasiestandshortesttextsIhaveevercomposedbutthevehicleinquestionevokes such incredibly differingemotions(alsofromyourstruly)thatit threatens tobloatmyreport intonovelproportions.

Yousee,I’vebeendrivingaroundinLandRover’sDefender110Heritagelimited-editionmodel.

AsamotoringjournalistIshouldtellyou that theDefender’s productionstoppedlatein2015becausetheoldBritfailedsomanysafetyandbunny-huggerteststhatLandRoversimplyhadtopulltheplug.

Its construction is also incrediblyoutdatedandsobackwardsthatoneshouldactuallytype“goodriddance”.

However. Insteadofendingmytextafterafewsentencesaboutthislast-hurrah model, I confess that I’mextremelyfondoftheDefender;andevenownedoneforafewyears.ThatmeansI’moneofthosecrazypeoplewhowill put upwith the apparentreliabilityissuesbecauseIliketheseboxybrutes.

OvertheyearsIhavealsodevelopedaloveofLandCruisersandG-wagons–twopositionsonmywishlistandperfect examples of what wouldhappen if someone else built theDefender. So what made me buy aLandyandtakeitsfablednonsense?

Well, I have typed this before andhappilydispense itat thecountlessbraaiswhereLandy-bashingslotsinbetweenwannabe rugby refereeingandToyota adoration. Yes, they arequite moody but in the six years IownedaDefender,itleftmestrandedonce.Inthesameperiod,myGermansedanbrokedowntwice.

There is a small degree of truth tothose insufferable jokes about busschedules,heatedrearwindscreensandfreedogsbutthehardrealityisthat while Defenders usually haveniggles (like moody electrics) theyveryseldombreakdowncompletely.Andifyouarehandywithatoolbox,itwon’tactupforverylong.

“Whydidyoubuysuchanunreliablecar?”was the favoured response towhichIanswer“HarleyDavidson”or“Alfa-Romeo”.

Just like a Defender, these cars areoutdatedorinferiorproductswhichshould have been culled by theircompetition decades ago but theyenjoy a clientele with unmatchedpassionforthebrands.

I’vealsoutteredthisbefore- ifyoucrave a Defender (or Alfa, for thatmatter)nothingelsewilldountilyousatisfythatcraving.

NobodyhaseverapproachedmetochoosebetweenaCruiser,PatrolorDefender.SamegoesforAudi,BMWand Alfa. They usually lean in andwhisper“I’vebeenthinkingofbuyinga (or another) Defender.” Yes. Youdefinitelyshould.

And it doesn’t really matter whichonetheybuyastheonlybigupdatessince the Defender’s birth in 1983havebeen a fewengines and smallcosmeticchanges.

Tomostpeople,the“Series”modelsthat went before also look similarwhich iswhy, to theuntrained eye,this2015versionlooksnodifferenttoits1947grandpa.

Now,tofinallydescribethisHeritageEdition,itisbasedonthelast2.2-litreturbo-diesel “Puma” Defender One-tenandsportsmanynostalgicnods.ChiefamongtheseareitsGrasmeregreen flat paint, heavy-duty steelwheels,old-stylelogosandplaques,two-toneseatsandHUE166badges–theregistrationof“Huey”,theoldestLandyalive.

Thetwocomfortablefrontseatsareseparated by a central cubby boxwithtwocupholdersandanoptionalsubwoofer. This takes orders fromtheCD/radio/mp3headunitinthe“modern” dashboard with A/C andvent controls, a few buttons, grabhandles, simple instruments and amassivesteeringwheelwiththeonlyairbaginthisvehicle.

Shockandhorrorthough,themanualairventsleftafewyearsago.OthercomparativeobservationstomyoldDefenderincludethesamestubborngear and transfer levers, invasivepark brake lever position and rearpassengervisibility.

Newer Defender toys include two(front)powerwindows,ABSbrakes,tractioncontrolandcentrallocking.

This model also has split foldingmiddleseatsandtwofoldableseatsin the cargobaywhich can also beremovedforextrastowage.

Thesparewheelstillobscureswhatlittle rear visibility therewas,mosthingesareexposed,thehooterisn’twhereyouexpectitandthecarpetslooklikethehardyvariety.

DrivingthisDefenderaroundtownishardwork. The gears are short, itsclutch is heavy, those chunky tyresmakeanunholy racket, the turningradiusisawfulandcorneringisscary.

AfemalepassengersbemoanedthatLand Rover had still not fitted apassengervanitymirrorbuthad toback-paddle when asked why youwouldneedthat intheNamib.Thisbringsmetoitsintendedpurpose–thegreatoutdoors.

Mahindra?Ah,yes,it’sthatIndiancompany building sturdy pickuptrucks, hardy sport utilities andkind-ofoutmoded4x4types,right?

Right.Butnot formuch longer,asthe Indian giant (currently thethirdlargestmanufacturerinIndiabysalesvolume)isreadyingitselfforamodelonslaught–locally,aswellasinternationally.

Theoffensiveincludesabouquetofadvancedderivatives,includingtheinsanely competitive small hatchandSUVmarket.

Other innovations include theintroductionofthecarmaker’sfirstin-housedevelopedpetrolengine,and a new, advanced automaticgearbox – all aimed at expandingthemanufacturer’sfootprintandtowidenitsappealinothermarkets.

This reintroduction of Mahindrahasbeenhighlightedbytherecentlaunch of its minute REVA e20electriccarinBritain,aswellastheunveiling of its NuvoSport SUV(actuallyjustarevampedQuanto)initshomemarket.

South Africa’s importance cannotbe underestimated.Mahindra hasofficiallybeeninSouthAfricafor12years (although some of its jeep-typeproductsarerunningaroundhere,importedbyanindependentdistributorsinceabout1996)andMahindra currently retails some4,000vehiclesannually.

CompliantwithIndianregulationsforsmallvehicles(ithastobelessthan4metreslongandhaveasub-1.5-litre engine) the KUV standstaller than its competitors, and isthusroomier.

Accordingtomarketresearchdoneby Mahindra this is exactly whatbuyerswant;ahatchwiththelooksandspaceofasmallSUV–hencetheKUV’sunusualdesignlines.

Theresultissomewhatambiguous,though; its aggressive grille andnose giving it significant roadpresence, but its tall greenhousemaking it appear unbalanced –further emphasised by its smallwheelsandtyres.

Ifitslookswillbeacceptedlocally,remainstobeseen,buttheKUVisapioneer inanewsub-segment,asshown by upcoming competitormodels such as Datsun’s Redi-GOandtheFiatMobi.

The newKUV100 is also the firstMahindra with a petrol enginedeveloped in-house, and only thesecond(besidesXUV500)withuni-bodyconstruction.

Producing a healthymaximum of61kWat5,500rpmand115Nmoftorquearound3,600rpm,thesmall“mFalcon” G80 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo engine compareswellwithcompetitorofferings.

But its performance, while quitelively andwilling, is bestedby itsdiesel-powered“mFalcon”D751.2-litrethree-cylinderstablemate.

While57.4kWat3,750rpmdoesn’tsound likemuch, its190Nmfrom1,750rpm makes it the unit ofchoicetopropeltheheftyKUV100throughhecticIndiantraffic.

Locallythehatchback/SUVwillbeavailable with three trim levels,dualairbags,ABS,EBDasstandardfromtheentry-levelK4+upwards.

The neat layout of its instrumentpanelandsimple,strikingdesignofthecentreconsolewasparticularlynoticeableinthetopmodelK8,andmore impressive,whencomparedto theearlierMahindra’s,was thequality of the interior trim andmaterials.

Itshighrooflineinvokedasenseofspaciousnessandits243Lluggagecapacity,expandabletoagenerous473L with the rear seat foldeddown,wasmorethanample.

Theextrafoldableseatupfront(inessencemakingita6-seater)wasin the way when you wanted tochangegears,but luckilythis isn’tspecifiedforSA.

The interesting Indian newcomercompetes against the likes of theMaruti-Suzuki Baleno, HyundaiGrandi10,RenaultKwidandFordFigoinIndia,whilelocallyitwillbeaimedattheRenaultCaptur,SuzukiSwiftandToyotaEtios.

The design of the bigger seven-seater TUV300 was, according toMahindra,inspiredbyabattletank.IncontrasttotheKUV100itslinesareveryangular.

Inreallifethetallvehicleismuchbiggerthanexpected–with384Lofluggagespacethatcanbeexpandedto720Lbyfoldingawaythesmallinward-facingrearseats.

InIndiaitisavailablewitha59kWor 61.5kW derivative of the 1.5-litre“mHawk”turbodiesel,buttheSAmodelwill bepoweredby thenew,morepowerful75kWversion,with230Nmoftorque.

TheTUV300,likethenewKUV100,isavailableinT4+,T6+orT8trimlevels, and will initially have thefive-speed manual transmission,but an automaticderivative couldfollowlater.

This vehicle’s build quality andcabin appointments, like those inits KUV100 counterpart, are ofsurprisinglygoodquality,andforatallvehicleitshandlingiscertainlyacceptable.

Whileitssmallishenginepullswellatlowrevolutions,itsoonbecomes

breathless,anditmaywellstruggletokeepthequiteheavySUV(withaweightof2,225kg)uptohighwayspeedsinlocalconditions.

During our visitwe also sampledthenewXUV500auto,aswellasthefacelifted Scorpio, now with newfrontend,grilleandrevisedladder-frame chassis which somewhatimprovesridequality.

However, the six-speedAisinautotransmission in the XUV is reallygood; seamless and quick, andshould add to the medium-sized

SUV’sappealwhen itarriveshereinSeptember.

While the Thar was discontinuedfrom the local line-upa coupleofyearsago,Mahindranowplanstoreintroducetherugged4x4tothelocalmarketlaterthisyear.

Based on the Jeep CJ9 the latestTharfeaturesrevisedinteriortrim(including air-conditioning) andanewreardiff-lock,andproveditselfa very capable off-roader in ourtests at Mahindra’s Igatpur 4x4-track.

Consideringthemanpowerand investment it takes toputanewcaronitswheels,Icertainlywon’targuewiththatbut find thephrase tobeslightlyoverused–withvery few exceptions. LikethenewOpelAstra.

This really is an importantmodel, especially in ourmarket where the Astra isprettymuchnearthetopofanOpeldealer’spricelist.

From a global perspective,this C-segment hatchbackneedstobegoodenoughforapropereye-to-eyecontestwith everyone’s perennialfavourite,theVWGolf.

To see if it can match (orbetter)theVolksie,Ispentafewdayszippingaboutinabrand-newAstrapresscar;also taking this grey Opelonanextendedroadtripforfurtherevaluation.

Not only did my journeycoverthefamousRoute62intotheKaroo,italsoendedup at the house of an oldpetrol-headmateofmine.

Hisqualificationsaremostsatisfactory as he is abouttobuyhis39thconsecutivecar;andtwoofthe38wereAstras.

Not long after our arrival,hisautomotivemajestywasbehind the wheel of saidpresscartogivehisexpertopinion. In short, most ofhiscommentswerefairandpositive.

Ropinginourresidentladyjournalistandateenagecarnut,wequicklyagreedthatOpel’snewAstraisquitealooker;itcutsamodernandappealingshape.

This top-of-the-line modelhassufficientdesigndetailsandwheeldiameterstolureamodernbuyer.Samegoesforitscurvyandinterestingdashboard;whichisloadedwithtechnology.

Someofthegadgetsonthis1.4T Sport model includeautomatic climate control,self-parkingsystem,Intelli-link infotainment systemwithnavigation,blindspotand traffic sign assistant,rear-viewcamera,adaptivecruise control with laneassist and collision alert,front sports seats withheating, remote centrallockingandkeylessstart.

These goodies give it firepower tocounteranyrivalspecifications and it’s myhumble opinion that thequalityandfinishofthenewAstra is darn close to VWstandards.

You’llfinddifferencesifyoulooklongandhardenoughbut even the hard plasticsinside our press car weresuperblymadeandfitted.

DrivinganewAstrarevealsevenmoreammunitionforahatchbackbrawl.

Steering, suspension andpedal feedback is smooth;thecarfeelslightyetstableon its tyres. The 18-inchwheelsfittedhereprovidedheapsofgripand,togetherwith comfortable seats, acommendablysuppleride.

One niggle I hadwaswiththiscar’s1.4LTurbo-petrolfour-cylinderenginewhichclaimsmaximumoutputsof110kWor230Nm.

Especiallyathigherspeeds,IfoundthatIhadtochangedowntoooften,sometimestwoorthreegears,becausethemotor lacked torque. Ihasten toadd that this car

only had 2,500km on theclockandwasprobablystillwakingup.

Another noteworthy itemwas the Astra’s automaticstart/stop system. Usually,thesetendtoawakenwhenyoudepress theclutchbuthereitonlywakesupwhenyou release the brake; likeanautomatic.

Yetagainit’snotaconcernand never presented real-world issues; it just takessomegettingusedto.

One thing I couldcertainlygetusedtowastheAstra’sfrugal consumption. Opel’soptimistic average claim is5.1L/100kmbutwegotanadmirable6.5 on theopenroad and seven to eight intown.

FillingtheAstra’s48Ltank(at a current cost of about600bucks)translatesintoarange between 600 and700km.

Likemostofitsrivals,Opeloffers various engines andtrim levels for the Astra.Every model has decentspecificationsandthus,notmany options left to tick.There’s also an automatic1.4turbo.

Prices range from aboutN$260,000 to N$411,000withthis1.4Sportnudgingtheupperendofthatscale.

Still,that’sslightlylessthanthepeople’scarmakerfromWolfsburgwillaskfortheirequivalenthatchbackwhichcertainlymakestheAstraatempting alternative inmyeyes.

Not better, nor any worsebut definitely newer andmoreinteresting.Butdon’ttakemyword for it; thereshould be one waiting atyournearestdealer.

Itappearsthatthecarindustryisinrudehealthbecauseeveryweekwewitness the launchofa new model. Usually anothercrossover,designedtoplugagapnobodyhadthoughtofyet.

ThankGoodness there are stillvehicles that don’t try to beeverythingtoeveryone–likethenewsmarts.

Our bulging egos and rapidlyreducing attention spans havegivenbirthtovehiclesthattrytoblendeveryimaginablescenariointoafour-wheeledshapebut–caution, spoileralert – theendresultstendtobecompromisedin all the wondrous ways wewantthemtowork.

Not sowitha smart, especiallythe tiny fortwo city car. Themanufacturer published a verypoignant commercial a fewyearsagowhichpokesfunatourcrazyloveforcity4x4’s.Itseesafortwo failingmiserably at off-roading and a large SUV crawlpast a tiny city parking bay –which the fortwo city slickerthentakes.Like,LOL.

Thefortwofirstsawlightofdayback in1998, its“smart”nameapparentlyharkingback to thecooperation between Swatchand Mercedes-Benz: “SwatchMercedesART”.

Withjusttwoseatsandlessthanthreemetersinlength,thistrulyistheperfectcitycar.Soperfect,infact,thatithasfoundover1.5millionowners.

Poweredby600or700ccturbo-petrolthree-cylinderengines,itwasreplacedbygenerationtwoin 2007. This was sold untilrecently with a comparativelyenormous 1-litre engine andadditional luxuries on somemodels.

Crucially, that fortwo versiondidn’t really change shape orsizeverymuch.

This new model, launched in2014, has some of the originalproportionsbutshowsrounder,

stubbierdesign.I’mstillgettingusedtoitbuthastentoaddthatateeny-tinycitycardoesn’tneedbeautyandsoul.

What it needs is funky style,incredible personalization andlotsofpracticality–which thisnewonecertainlyhas.

It’s also a ground-up redesignand, bar for inner-city antics,it feels more composed andrefinedthanthelittlesmart.Thelonger wheelbase adds morehigh-speed stability, comfortand reduced noise (engine)levels.

Innovative considerations forthe S.A. market include theadditionofanelectricmodel.InEurope,smartE.V.’sarethebest-sellers in their class for bothversions.

There was also talk of turbo-charged engines (66kW) withdual-clutch auto’boxes arrivinglater;aswillthenaughtyBrabusfortwo(88kW).

InsomecrowdedEuropeanandAmerican citieswith their lackofspaceandparking,theseweecarsareofferedinthe“car2go”public rental schemes; whichare also being considered forlargecitiesinSouthAfrica.

Morehighlightsof theupdatedsmartrangeincludeniftyseats,LEDdaytimelights,tightturningradii,shortoverhangs,ESPwithcrosswind assistant and freshtelematics (read: media andnavigation).

Forfour’sreardoorsopenupto85° and it sports a two-piecetailgate for easy loading. Wealso found trendy textures andmoderncabins insidethehigh-strength“tridion”safetycell.

This extremely rigid passengerprotectioncageisprobablyoneof smart’s biggest stumblingblocksinthisneckofthewoods.Especially the petite fortwo isoftenknockeddownindisgust:“Neejong,Iwouldn’twanttobeinthatwhenatruckhitsyou!”

Well,ifyoudriveanythingolderthan ten years – especially abakkieorSUV–you’dbewrong.

ThenewOpelCorsa isa farcry from these simple carsand I absolutely loved ourrecenttestmodel.

Personally I wouldn’t describetheoldQ7asuglybutthisnewonemanagestohideitssizeverywell.Goodjob,Audi.
