The overall goal of the USAID Southern Africa Trade Hub (SATH), which began in September 2010, is to increase international competitiveness, intra-regional trade, and food security in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The project has a contract ceiling of US $82 million and will run for five years (a four-year base period with the option to extend for one year).

SATH provides technical assistance and training on a demand-driven basis in support of the regional trade agenda while working to promote increased private sector competitiveness along specific value chains within the region: cotton, textiles and clothing, legumes (soya and groundnuts), and staple crops (maize). SATH focuses on the harmonization of agricultural and other standards with international standards and the ability of private firms to understand and comply with regional and international market standards.Key initiatives include: • Improving regional grain storage facilities and

management practices; •Mitigating Aflatoxin levels; •Enhancing the competitiveness of the regional
